From the temp board, this is a grab-bag preview of what I am submitting to Piedmont College's Athletic Director. I need some good crit to make this a pakage to be proud of. By request, I was asked to update their current logo, seen here at Piedmont College AthleticsWhich lion color scheme do you like better? (My bad for making the circles too small on the one.) What can I do to improve each individual wordmark, or the wordmarks as a whole? What ideas do you guys have that would make this better?

The second logo jumps out more, and so I'd go with that one for a primary--it looks fierce, and I like the no eyeball look here...

the PC script looks sort of strange to me. its too ridgid or something. and yeah the second logo is way better, the first one is kind of hard to see with the black backround. abd i dunno, hunter green and black blend togather really badly. maybee lighten up the green. other than that this logo is spot on.

Rhymes with stump. I feel so shameful for doing this. :P

Happens to the best of us.

Both logos are outstanding, but I prefer #2. I love the colours, and, ironically, I'm working on a logo set with similar colours. Wordmark looks great, also.

Overall it's a 1000% improvement from their current logo, and I hope all goes well.

I think the package is pretty good. I like the first logo better because it looks more like a lion. The green mane on the second one just doesn't do it for me.

One question about the wordmark: Why does it say 'Piedmont Lions Piedmont'? I think it should just say 'Piedmont Lions'.

haha I figured that would confuse someone. I made two big wordmarks, and one little one, and just threw them on there for preview. Thats not how they will look when used. They will probably used separately, with one saying "PIEDMONT" or possibly extended to say "PIEDMONT College," and the other saying "Piedmont LIONS." There is just one focused on the school and the other on the nickname. they are meant to be separate wordmarks.

Here are the updates after I got shot down with my original design. I gave them ten logo choices and a bunch of wordmark examples. They wanted more green and white and less gold and black. Still looking for some ideas on how to make their cough*awfulandoutdated*cough logo look good.

I really like the second lion in from the left in both rows.

How about this...use the one second from left from the bottom row, with a white face and gold eyes. I know it would look weird, but it would bring out the green and white more and push the gold back to a secondary color.

If they really want to focus on green and white, I say go with the second from the left on the top row, and eliminate the gold circle inside of the green circle. in my opinion, these are all very nice

I like the middle one, top row. It isn't complicated, but at the same time, it isn't too simple. It has the green and white. To me, anything to the right of that one is too complicated with all the extra hair, and anything on the far left is too simple without the face detail.

I (also) don't think you need the circle element.

And while I'm here........I'm not sure it works having the "P" essentially a lowercase letterform.

I know you want it to hang down further than the other letters, which is a nice touch, but it then becomes lowercase by default.

Does it throw everything off to make the P also taller than iedmont?

OR, if you dont like that, try making the circular portion of the "P" extend down as low as the bottom of all the other letters?

I'm kinda partial to the 2 on the top row on the left. I like your modified version of the simple head. The more you add the more busy it becomes.

Given that, if you were to go with the simpler illustration style, which it sounds like Piedmont is favoring anyway, I would change the wordmarks to more closely match that style of illustration.

The wordmarks are too edgy compared to the simpler logo styles. Work up something more traditional for the text. I have a feeling you may have a stubborn group that wants what they want and not consider an edgier style. Better prepare yourself for that instance.

As for the circle element Sterling, if I had my choice it would not be there, but the client says, "Now to the logo solution, I should take a second to clarify our direction. We are not looking for a new logo or a new identity. We are looking to take the existing logo and add an adjustable (by sport) wordmark. Feel free to tweak the existing logo." It is definitely a strange an daunting task given the resources and guidelines, but hopefully I can finally get some work out of it.

The "P" situation is kind of strange. All the letters in "Piedmont" are uppercase. I have no problem differentiating, but I created it so that does not count. Does anyone else have that problem. Basically, I wanted to drop the stem of the "P" down and extend the one of the "L" up so they could puzzle together if there is a "Piedmont Lions" wordmark in the works. The stem of the "P" really has the function of acting as a left margin for anything that is placed under it, like "College" or a sport name.

Now, if they do go with a simple logo, I think I will ditch the italics and the drop shadow on the wordmarks. Further, I think an arch might me in the works if that happens because its a pretty traditional university style. I am hoping the beveled edges and puzzle-fitting letters can stay, because I spent a good time on those. :P
