TruColor
In the thread regarding the original, unused Jaguars uniforms, it was mentioned that the Jags had a "skinny" font-style that they adopted before the 1997 season, and then abandoned due to the fact that the numbers were too hard to read.I was lucky enough to obtain a 1997 NFL Style Guide (I only have the physical sheets, no vector files, so don't even think about it), and I've scanned the pic for us all to see:I edited out all of the Pantone/Process color information, because I think it's the right thing to do... Discrim
I'd been thinking they changed the numbers after the season opener, it must have happened beforehand. I'm wondering about the two golds, though-is it because one's metallic and the other's flat, or what? I'm wondering about the two golds, though-is it because one's metallic and the other's flat, or what? I thought they changed before the season, but I could be wrong...There's actually THREE Golds - two flat Golds in the uniform, and a Metallic Gold used only on the helmet decal. They still use this metallic in the helmet decal and a flat one in the uniform to this day. Not sure why they needed this third one - it doesn't make sense... TruColor
Here's an even better representation of the colors they used in 1997:You can see all three shades of Gold here...Interestingly, only the Metallic Gold (used in the helmet decal) is still being used today...the Teal, flat Gold and even the Black is different now than it was in 1997... Discrim
very interesting...having one metallic gold and one flat gold, makes sense cus I figure it's somewhat difficult to get the two exactly the same. two flat golds on the same uniform perplexes me. IceCap
Thank goodness they dropped those black inserts too...don't fit a bit... i have to disagree. th eblack inserts allow the colour black (which ispart of the jags scheme) to become prominant in the unis without it being overdone. who knows: if the jags had keept 'em maby they would have gotten their black "fix" and wouldnt have added those auful black jerseys and pants. STL FANATIC
Unfortunatley, a thick black stripe doesn't flow into a patterned stripe of black/gold/teal/gold/black, and that's what I meant by doesn't fit.Non-matching side stripes are horrible. quantum
I was disappointed that they went away from this design. I can't imagine how continuing the black-gold-teal-gold-black striping for the side panels would look good. They had it right with the solid black. robbman21
I used to have a 1997 NFL pre-season book called "Blitz" from the makers of "Slam" magazine. There was a NIKE ad in it which feature Terrell Davis diving over at the goal line wearing the Broncos new unis. The team he was doing this against? The Jags, complete with the white versions of those new unis with that font, and I always thought it bizarre when I saw their highlights when the season started.Something was different but I could not put my finger on it.I always thought that they took a pic from the 1996 season or playoffs and digitally added those unis.If I still have that book I'll scan the pic and show you guys. Puckguy14
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think the striping on the pants is off on there, since I believed it was the first year that Nike thickened the black and thinned out the gold. 2004 San Jose Sharks 7th Man Fan of the Year San Jose Gold Miners - 4x Lombardi Cup Champions

Your right, continuing the pants stripe would look horrible. They did the right thing by keeping the pants stripe and losing any side striping. cward
I was always wondering about this uni design. As a jags fan, I got a jax home Brunell jersey for my birthday around '97. It had the same skinny number font (8) with the drop shadow and the black side panels. The season started and they had switched to the current number font. I always wondered what happened there. Thanks for the info pantone. www.skyedesignstudios.com
BBTV
Yeah, those are the jerseys I remembered. The change was totally for the better IMO. Those numbers look a little silly to me.One mystery down...one to go.The mystery of the Rams custom / block / back to custom number fonts ('00-'01) "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."
