Metallic NFL helmets

OK, lately ive noticed that a lot of teams have switched from their old style lighter colored helmets to a darker metallic helmet. Ive seen the Packers, Vikings, Giants, Eagles, Titans (from Oilers), Dolphins, The Browns have been roumored to do this, and a few im not totally sure about are the Rams and Broncos with the color switch, and the redskins. Does this bother anyone else? It didnt bother me at first but now i see it as a trend almost like the black trend. I mean will eventually every team switch to this? I hope not.

i, for one, absolutely love it. to me it takes a lot of hemets from "meh" to absolutely gorgeous. it makes them look so much more classy and more a part of the design of the uniform, instead of an afterthought.

just look at the difference!:

I like it because it seems with the flat colored helmets you often get color differences between helmet and jersey ie. giants ie. vikings and it appears that the metallic helmet can match colors better. I don't like it with all colors, Utah and North Carolina's helmets look horrible with the metallic effect.

I'm not an expert on this (hello, Cowboy Kevin), but I know for a fact that the Ravens wear a Metallic Black, while the Titans and Cardinals use a Metallic White. The Dolphins wear a "pearlescent" White shell, with metallic logo decals...

I almost said Ravens but if so, i think it was a recent change, maybee not. And i wasnt sure what the cards were going to be using.

I didn't know the 'Phins used metallic decals - I'm guessing that includes the stripes. I knew they did something different with the decals, but I always shrugged it off as the pearlescent finish showing through - in hindsight, I guess that would be near impossible. I think the Cards have used just a plain white shell - I don't know if they are using a pearl finish with the new unis though. Falcons also use a metallic finish on their helmets, and for some reason, it's way more obvious than the Ravens.

In college, the first team I noticed that did the metallic/pearl paint job was Oklahoma, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Just makes the helmets so much more vibrant. And correct me if I'm wrong, but USC (Trojans) have a pearl finish to them as well - I think it started in '03. It's made their helmets 100x better.

I believe the Cardinals have used a metallic shell since 2001.

The Ravens have had used Metallic Black for their helmet since at least 1997. It's listed as such in a 1997 Style Guide I have for them. I could probably assume that they used it in 1996 as well, but I can't be for certain.

I'll get Cowboy Kevin on here to clear this all up - he REALLY is an expert on this subject...

I think Mac's right but I never understood this argument. With the technology and sophistication that exists today, why is it so difficult to match the color of a plastic helmet with the colors of the textiles used in making uniforms? I realize that sweat alters the appearances of a team's colors, but some teams have some wide disparaties. And if going to a metallic helmet closes this gap, than it should be feasible with a matte-finish helmet.

I do like the metallic finishes, because they reflect the sunlight/stadium lights better and gives the helmets more visual pop, especially since football helmets get beaten up more than helmets in other sports (unless you're the helmet of Craig Biggio, Jim Thome or Vladimir Guerrero, but that's different... <_< ).

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

I think I read somewhere (probably SSUR - thx Pantone) that part of the Browns reasoning for developing a metallic orange helmet was so they could bring back the orange pants and they'd match the helmet better than if it was still flat.

You know what...the Ravens changed their number font in 1997 (slightly - they went sans serifs), and I remember reading the press release saying they were going with a metallic black shell that same year. I'm 99.99999% certain that the Ravens used a flat black in 1996, then changed in '97. That press release is as clear as day in my mind.

Interesting...I've got logo sheets from 1996, but not the uniform guide.

I think you are correct. Incidentally, their old numbers from their first season became what the Arizona Diamondbacks have used since their inception.

And what is "metallic black" exactly, anyway? <_<

I worked the Ravens sideline for the Sunday night game versus the Colts last year and noticed no glitter in the Raven's helmets. They were shiny yes but not glittery. I could be wrong but I really think you guys are over estimating how many teams have the glitter helmets. I don't believe the Browns use them either. I read about a year ago they were going to the glitter ones but couldn't get a mixture that didn't look red in the sunlight so they abandoned the idea. Most NFL helmets are glossier looking now(probably from some sort of clear coat) and that brightens them and causes shine and reflection.
