Cleveland Browns looking at throwbacks for 06

Not sure if this is going to be a full time change or a once or twice a year change, but the Browns owner Randy Lerner was looking at different throwbacks on NFL Network last night.

99% of Browns fans would prefer a change to something like this to a change to the garish, horrid orange jerseys of years past.

Current look:

The changes are very close to the classic Jimmy Brown-era unis:

Of course, the totally undeserved "AL" would be removed as well.

I'm sure they'd sneak that up there regardless of what they pick...

It seems like "Gray Mask Disease" is starting to take over in place of "Black Jersey Disease".

"Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running." - Unknown | 🌐 Check out my articles on jerseys at Bacon Sports 🔗

Grey masks do have a history for some teams, and for the game in general. The Browns used to wear them.

Most of the teams that return to them had worn them at some time in the past.

I dont think its on par with unnecessary black.

I think EVERYONE had grey masks at some point, but that doesn't mean it looks good. As far as UGLY goes I think it is on par with the black.

I for one have NO problem with the grey mask color. It's better than some of the supposed "matching" masks that have made appearances over the last few years. Gray masks are unobtrusive and really call no attention to themselves as opposed to teams that have bright white masks on dark helmets or worse yet, accent colors.

Personally, I think the only reason the browns helmet looks any good without a logo on it is because it just looks plain good with a white facemask. Grey facemask=notsomuch.

I think that the grey facemask looks ok on most teams, like the Colts and Cardinals, but i feel that certain teams desperately need a colored facemask, like the Patriots and 49ers.

You know, everyone wore unstriped, tan canvas pants at one time, too. Quite a bit of precedent and history with those.

Let's go back to that then, shall we?

And while we're at it, bring back rotary phones!

*cough*

Yeah, kind of a pointless change.

But if they're gonna do it, they should put the numbers on the sleeves IMO. Gray facemask? I guess it's ok...some teams can get away with it (Colts), some teams can't (Cardinals).

They should also go back to the striped socks too. I think a general rule of thumb is that if you have stripes on your sleeves, you should wear striped socks. Creates better symmetry, IMO.

Grey facemasks look okay on white and silver helmets. However, when they are on white helmets, it's still a mistake to use them if they aren't part of the color scheme, and especially if they don't fit the jersey design (see Cardinals). They also look okay when grey is part of the color scheme (see Giants).

When grey isn't part of the color scheme, grey facemasks have absolutley no place though. NONE. I'll say it again, tradition should only make a great look better, not keep a bad one around.

Grey on orange specifically looks AWFUL.
