New thirds for US national team?

As someone who has yearned for a return to a red shirt since the 2000 shirts were retired, and as someone who is both going to the sendoff game in Harford on Sunday and headinf over to Germany for the World Cup, I am delighted with this design - so much so that I pre-ordered one from US Soccer as soon as they were available.

I love the collar. The shirt design is a bit od a combination of the red 1998 shirt and the retro-1950 throwbacks Nike came out with last year.

Anyone know/have a feeling if they'll be selling these jerseys at the actual 5/28 game? I hope they do, because I could convince my mom to buy one for me as an early birthday present :D

Also, I'm in Rhode Island - anyone know of any malls/stores in RI/southeastern MA where they sell the "don't tread on me" t-shirts? I just don't wanna have to order one from ussoccer.com and pay like $7 shipping.

:notworthy:

It might seem obvious, but I think that we should use the shield more often in US national team gear.

Which crest?

The retro one, or the "Don't Tread on Me" crest?

Both! ^_^

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Exactly. Either way I would be happy.

What I really meant was that I think the shield should be used more often for all US national teams, a la the 1932 Team USA hockey throwbacks:

Call me slow but I just realized what "Don't Tread On Me" represents. While doing a Google search for a DTOM t-shirt, I found that during the Revolution, the patriots had "Don't Tread On Me" as a slogan underneath a snake, used on posters and flags. Don't remember that from any History class. I agree, this has to be Nike's most clever logo yet. I would definetely go for this being US Soccer's new logo. If not, the MLS's Revolution could use it. ^_^

Looks like Nike's been doing their homework.

It's also the Navy Jack used by the US Navy since 9/11 and is to be in use until the War on Terror is done (whenever that is...)

Okay, I went into Niketown on my break, and was disappointed to find they didn't have the ringer tee. What they did have, though, was an enormous amount of merch for several different nations: USA, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, Brazil, Croatia, and probably others I didn't see. What struck me is how much of a departure all of this was from what we've come to expect from Nike these past few years. Rather than cramming the Nike brand down all of these nations' throats and forcing a single template with varying colors upon our senses, the folks at Nike have developed very well thought-out individual styles and identities for each nation, down to unique number fonts. I was perhaps most impressed by Mexico's kit, which features a subtle hint of the Aztec-inspired sublimation from World Cup '94 in the white strip across the front of the shirt. It looks fabulous.

I'm usually very anti-Nike, but I've gotta give credit where it's due. This is a company which has stepped up its game for what is arguably the premier stage in international sport. Now let's see if their college football department can take the hint and lay off the piping and back stripes.

I'm also fully behind adopting the DTOM crest as the full-time crest. Imagine how cool it would be to have the American squad referred to in international soccer circles as "the Rattlesnakes." Perhaps the top of the crest could be changed from "US SOCCER" to simply "USA" flanked by two stars.

I'm going to get a "Don't Tread on Me" tee during the WC, and I really hope Nike pulls some strings to get that DTOM crest (minus the swoosh, that can be used elsewhere on the kit) as the new permanent one...and that we adopt the red as the official third. I like the new-old style second kit, and I like the stripes on the home....with the red third it'd be complete.

hell, anyone else here think this campaign is a drawn-out public test for using it as a possible crest? it's win-win; if people react positively you institute it, if they don't it doesn't have to be a long-term deal.

I too am in love with that crest, but I wish they'd replaced the black and royal blue all with navy. Still looks great and matches the flag much better.

Now, that was a quick photoshop recoloring, and it's a little blury, but that gets the idea across.

Regardless, I still love what they put out and hope I can find a shirt with it.

I was preparing myself to not like it, but I do. It is cool that we have the diagonal stripe from the old school jerseys, bringing back the red. All good. I hope the replicas of this are affordable.
