For as long as I've been alive, the Yankees had the Clippers. I thought that was most in part because of Steinbrenner's connection to Ohio and the boating industry.Any reason why these teams are switching places? Good for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre though. Teaming up with the Yankees imust be good for business. For as long as I've been alive, the Yankees had the Clippers. I thought that was most in part because of Steinbrenner's connection to Ohio and the boating industry. Accually I think the Clippers name had a link to when they were affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I don't recall this much movement in AAA baseball in such a short amount of time. And with teams like the Yankees, Phillies and Mets, who've maintained their affiliates for such extended periods of time. Wow. And if the rosters are essentially switched, what's the point of switching affiliations? You still have rights to the same players. Sometimes you switch affiliate locations for financial reasons (i.e., the MLB team wants its AAA team closer). Sometimes, an affiliate says 'the teams you've provided us sucked, we don't want you any more' (which is what Indianapolis did to the Brewers recently). (Yes, they weren't happy with it being 90 miles away!) Also, the management at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre was unhappy with the Phillies' demands.So the Phillies say they want to move to Allentown, which is 40 miles from Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Ottawa has been doing terribly for the past several years, and the owner wants to get out of town. Ottawa's owner gets a stadium deal in Allentown and makes plans to move there.The new Allentown ballpark was supposed to be ready for 2007, in time for the Phillies. But you know how these things go. The Phillies already said no to SWB, so they're stuck in Ottawa for a year ? if the stadium is finished by 2008. If it isn't, well ...So now Scranton/Wilkes-Barre goes team-shopping. Over the past few weeks, they've entertained visits by all of the other four teams mentioned. Meantime, the Yankees announce that they want out of Columbus.Usually, a minor-league city wants a long-term deal, for stability and marketing. But Columbus officials said they wanted somebody for just two years ... because the Indians' and Reds' affiliations become available in 2009!Both the Mets and Yankees were fighting for SWB. Officials for both big-league clubs were in Moosic this week. Finally, this morning they announced that the Yanks were coming.Heading south, since it was obvious the Mets wanted out of Norfolk (after almost 40 years!), the Virginia city courted the Orioles and Nationals, both of which make geographic sense. Turns out Baltimore gave Norfolk the better deal.That was okay with Columbus, because the Nationals were willing to take a two-year deal in Ohio. If New Orleans and Allentown switch rosters with an affiliate switch, and Allentown is just a bad team, that just moves the bad team to New Orleans with no real remedy of the problem of bad minor league teams. It does matter to those of us who live in minor-league cities. We want our local teams to be affiliated with good programs. While we admit that the players on our teams are future Yankees or Phillies or Orioles or whatever, for the moment they are our Red Barons or Clippers or Tides.
