Horses over Hockey?

Did this happen to anyone else here in pittsburgh after the 3rd period of the East Finals game 5 they went straight to an hour and a half of horse racing pregame and just came back to say that the Sens won. That really made me mad even though I really didnt care who won the game i still wanted to see the end of it and not an hour of horses.

Simple. NBC paid to get the Triple Crown races on their network, and are contractually obligated to air them over anything else. NBC doesn't pay anything for the NHL, and naturally got the shaft to cable.

Money talks in today's world.

that's pretty ridiculous that people invest 3 hours of their time for a freakin' hockey game and they cant even watch the result because of a stupid horse race. that is unless they have vs. if not then they're screwed. i'm sure nbc's going to get a hell of a lot of complaints

Damn horses, it is NBC after all

Nothing But Crap

I thought it was Nothing But Crosby?

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

NBC said that the overtime would be shown on Versus, and that after the commercial break, they'd be going to coverage of the Preakness. At some point in that 90 minute hockeyless period, did you consider changing channels? Even if you don't have a remote, you can march over to the ol' TV console and fiddle with the dials, right? Or did you really just sit there and NOT try to find the game?

I mean, feel free to gripe, but they did tell you where to find the OT. And if you didn't bother to scan the channels, or the TV Guide online service, then not finding the game's on you. But if you really believe that NBC shafted you (and all the other hockey fans not paying attention at the time the announcement was made to switch channels) and should NOT have changed to one of the 3 annual horse races that still matters to people from coast-to-coast in the name of appeasing the handful of hockey fans still faithful to the game... then I can't help you. NBC gets millions of dollars to broadcast a 2-minute race and the pomp and circumstance that accompany it. NBC gets peanuts to show hockey to a few fans not still pissed off about the cancelled season. People who don't like horse racing watch the Triple Crown races. Only the die-hards watch a hockey game, especially one pitting a small Northeastern market against a foreign country's capital city's team. And this is from a diehard hockey fan who was skating about the time he was walking.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

This all goes back on Bettman's head. He took the sure money and, granted, better treatment (in terms of not having to fight with NFL, NBA, MLB, college football and hoops and everything else ESPN shows) on Versus .... instead of ESPN's offer of a revenue sharing deal.

Funny, that revenue sharing deal was OK by Bettman when it came to getting on NBC.

So it's a dumber move to air games on basic TV for nothing instead of cable TV for nothing?

The NHL is getting money from a cable TV company and gets games on basic TV. Not a great deal by any means, but it tops not getting paid by a cable TV company and no air time on basic TV.

The NHL had to take Versus' offer. ESPN isn't going to offer comparable contracts like they have with the NBA and MLB to likes of the NHL and their lack-of-viewership.

What pisses me off about the NHL is how they show playoff games, including the Stanley Cup, on Versus. I had that channel last year and it was number 68. Then I moved and it's a satellite channel, up in the 100s. I don't want to buy satellite to watch my team playing in the Stanley Cup.

I got hosed because I taped the game on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and watched it later on tape, so I couldn't change channels. I also taped an extra couple of hours just in case it went to overtime.

Oh, so it has nothing with going with a cable channel owned by Comcast, which is owned by Ed Snider, who owns the Flyers?

So it has nothing to do with doing what's best for the league, instead of pissing off one Eastern owner?

Well, raise my rent.
