Bohob's MLB Redesign Project

In an attempt to get away from red, navy, and black you've failed. Why? Because looking at all your concepts, all I see are concepts that are stuck with the same tone or shades of color. All your colors are about a 6 or 7 on a tone shade scale and that is what you were trying to get away from when you said that you wanted to get away from Navy and Black. Black is a 10 on the tone/shade scale and white is 0. Navy, depending on which navy you look at is an 8 or a 9 on the scale, all you've done is drop the tone down on all your colors. Even your red and orange for the Cardinals and Astros are about a 6 or 7 on the tone scale. I wish people would look at tone/shade charts and look at colors wheels and see how colors relate to each other before doing concepts. As far as the Astros go, that is one major eyesore. Those colors are so similar that they are just blindingly bad. The orange and the yellow and that other color that you use for the road uniform just blend together and compete with each other. You need dark colors and to get rid of some of lighter colors. You really need a balance of light and dark colors. The number font on the Cardinals, is okay. I'm just not a fan of tall, thin numbers. The maroon is okay. The only other thing I'll say is when you use black such as for the Pirates, use rgb 10,10,10. Why? Because when you have your screen properly calibrated, then you'll realize that your black isn't black or even close to it, it's about a 6 on the tone scale. 10,10,10 is the right amount to make it black to most uncalibrated monitors, but on calibrated monitors it'll be light enough to where you can see the the shadows you're looking for.

Epiphanic, I tried gold numbers for the Brewers away, and it was much too close to the blue too be legible, and I couldn't see using white for just numbers and lettering when the rest of the uniform is practically devoid of it. Also, the ball-in-glove is one of the best uses of typography in a sports logo ever. Sorry, you can't see the merits of that logo, but most people in Wisconsin that I've talked to can see it and love the ball-in-glove.

"All your colors are about a 6 or 7 on a tone shade scale and that is what you were trying to get away from when you said that you wanted to get away from Navy and Black."

Oddball, I disagree with you respectfully, not only do most of the concepts feature a dark, but plenty of teams now only use a "6 or 7" as their darkest color, such as the Dodgers, Cubs, and Rangers, who really don't encounter legibility issues. I will take your advice on the black in the Pirates concept however. The difference wasn't nearly that noticeable before I posted them.

"Even your red and orange for the Cardinals and Astros are about a 6 or 7 on the tone scale."

True, but the red is accompanied by burgundy (8 or 9) and the orange is complimented by navy (8 or 9). Many teams brightened up their pallet in the 70s and 80s, but they didn't have issues. Nor do many basketball teams in a sport that requires officials to pick out numbers on moving targets. Although, I understand what you are trying to say, I don't think your argument is nearly as strong as you make it out to be.

#6: Cincinnati Reds

I wanted to switch the black out of this concept because I thought it was time. I kept Mr. Redlegs, but edited his hat to match the alt. hat. I put a shine on the C to liven it up a little. I also switched out the block font for the proprietary font they currently use, for the sake of consistency. The uniforms feature two-tone numbers as well as vests. I think this helps differentiate them from the Cardinals. The Sunday Alt features the return of the white hat, which is a look that reflects their history, as they have had white hats for a substantial part of their time in baseball. Enjoy! I may do more football after this, but I'm not sure. I might just be in a baseball mood.

EDIT: New version. Took out the shading and went back to basics. Grey C on the away cap. Also, no REDS in C on the chest of the Sunday Alt.

I see the typography. I know there's an "M" and a "B". But I don't see how that logo even compares to their current look that just screams "brewery." I'd venture a guess that Brewers fans like the ball-in-glove logo because it represented a good time in the history of the franchise and the nostalgia attached to that, not because it's a good logo. I'd also posit that if the Brewers continue to have success with their current identity, the general feeling will shift.

With the Cincinnati set, you didn't do much outside of adding a shadow on the lettering. I'm all for dropping the black, but the shadow has got to go. I think it detracts from the overall look. Cincinnati's general look is best served by simplicity. Don't over-complicate that.

Pirates is nice, with the same exception as the Astros and Cards. I just can't help but be turned off by the light, washed-out looking color of the uniforms. But that's personal taste.

Agreed on all points. The Reds set is nice, but the reflection/shadow effect isn't an improvement.

Meh, I liked the original better as well. And the grey lettering on the away alternate is pretty hard to read.

I'm glad you lost the effects, but I think maybe a compromise of the old and new concepts would be better for the Reds. I love the addition of grey, and I think some very strategically placed gray in the uniforms (and logos) would give them some much-needed depth.

It doesn't have to. Why can't they just look like a baseball team? For all the love that the script/monogram gets for "screaming beermaking" (a nice mental picture), the rest of the package is kinda crappy. Ugly Microsoft Word numerals that don't "scream beermaking" at all. Illegible names-on-back inasmuch as they're condensed Times New Roman outlined in white on white and drop-shadowed. Dull and uninspired third. Failure to wear a city script. Maroon in the main logo that doesn't appear anywhere else. Okay, I get it, the "Brewers" script looks vaguely like the Miller script. Clever. It's really not that good, guys. Besides, Milwaukee doesn't need to be cute.

#7: Philadelphia Phillies

With this set, I worked at tying the last two Phillies World Series Champion teams together. I used the burgundy and light blue from the 70s and 80s, while working with the current logo set. The primary home uniforms feature a burgundy hat with a powder blue brim and a white uniform with powder blue pinstripes. The home alternate is features a burgundy jersey with a faux v-neck and white script/numbers. The away primary features a powder blue P on a burgundy hat. The uniform is powder blue with white pinstripes. I wanted to keep the pinstripes subtle, so they wouldn't overpower the uniform. The away alternate a is burgundy jersey with powder blue script/numbers. The Sunday Alt. is a faux v-neck with a P crest and numbers on the front. The Sunday Alt cap features trim around the panels of the hat a la the 1914 Phillies. The BP hat has a contrast brim with a liberty bell on the front. C&C is always appreciated. I'm thinking Mets next.

Phillies look nice, bohob. Great colors, clean, and balanced. I still can't make myself like the colored road unis, but based on your goals for this project, this concept is succeeding nicely.

Not feeling the Astros so much. I really don't see how there is much of a confusion between brick red and burnt orange. I think one thing that would help would be to darken the orange to provide more contrast with the yellow. I like how you thought out of the box with the pastel colored aways though.

I think the Astros need an "away" hat in navy with your redesigned A-"star" logo. Also, the alternate white unis should be the home jersey, with navy as the alternate.

How about those...

Mets?

Packers?

Rangers?

Knicks?

Titans?
