Division 1 College Conference Realignment

Just invite Rice, Houston and SMU. SWC reunion, and it gets the conference membership back up to twelve.

Those schools are way too small and have way too little fan support to be in a BCS conference. From what I've heard, they're looking at BYU.

Both of the schools you bolded have larger enrollment than Wake Forest and Vanderbilt.

One could say the same about Baylor. How did they get into the Big XII and not Houston or Rice (SMU I could understand)? Baylor's football program was the laughing stock of the Big XII up until a couple of years ago, and they weren't exactly setting the world on fire in (men's) basketball either.

Yes, but they're losing A&M. There are bigger fish in the pond (BYU, Notre Dame?) for the Big 12 to target first before your list.

To answer your question about Baylor, DCDuck: I remember that when the Big 12 was formed, the Texas Legislature pushed the conference to add Baylor because the governor at that time was a Baylor grad.

Houston and SMU (and to an extent, Rice) would be perfect for the Big 12. Both Houston and Rice gets them back into the Houston market and SMU is more then willing to get into a BCS conference. Why not, you know?

Notre Dame already said no. Besides, why would they join the Big XII when they've already turned down the Big Ten (rivalries, geography) and Big East (where they play all of their other sports except hockey)?

Those schools have much bigger athletic departments than Rice and SMU. And they actually have people show up to their games (Wake Forest nearly sells out most of their football games). It's possible that SMU could work if they garner enough fan support, but Rice is just too small and doesn't have any athletic support except in baseball.

Use your Google machine to look at your history.

Baylor got invited to the Big XII for a couple of reasons. One was the Texas state government, specifically then Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock, Gov. Ann Richards, and State Senate Finance Chair David Silbey all had ties to Baylor.. Secondly, at the time of the start of the conference, TCU, SMU and Houston were recently off probation, Baylor was not had no recent record of probation.

Thought BYU was happy going indy?

From what I've been hearing they're considering a few MWC teams like San Diego State.

BYU is happy being an independent for many reasons:

1-They have a contract with ESPN plus they have their own distribution nationally via BYUtv, which is available on 600 cable franchises and DirecTV plus their games will stream live online.

2- All BYU has to do to become BCS eligible is get nine wins and be ranked 14th or better in the final BCS poll.

As for SDSU, that is a program which does not have any money.

Wrote this in the TAMU peacing thread.

Well I think this will set off a firestorm leading to the end of Big XII football altogether. Texas is destined for Independence, Pac 12 wants 16, the Oklahoma schools and Kansas schools make sense to go there. Baylor, Mizzou, Tech and Iowa State will find homes no doubt about it. Unless the are really serious about SMU, Houston, etc and I doubt BYU would leave being independent, I think the end is near. Of course I don't know all the paperwork logistics, but to me I think it's only a matter of time.

This is for sure the first HUGE domino to fall. Next up is who the SEC targets for # 14 (or more). Then who the Big 12 targets for replacement (if any).

You'd think it'd have to be Clemson or Florida State. Both I think would fit in well with the SEC crowd. Clemson has a rivalry with South Carolina, and Florida State with Florida. Really that's about it when it comes to the SEC. Virginia schools make no sense, and really what would be the best I think is a merge between the ACC and Big East, maybe invite Central Florida, then boom you have a pretty decent conference to combat the rest of the country.

It's so easy writing about it, but in reality it's a lot more complicated then just moving schools and thinking they'll fit in, but who knows these conferences are like lemmings if one jumps off the proverbial cliff, the others are sure to follow. Terrible comparison I know but they're either setting themselves up to be great or ruin the College Football landscape as we know it.

South Carolina would fight tooth and nail to keep Clemson out, and Florida would fight tooth and nail to keep FSU out of the SEC.

My bet would have been Miami to the SEC but they have that whole "death penalty? srsly?" thing going on in South Beach.

This just gets better by the minute

Report: Pitt Top Target For Big XII Expansion

I'm sorry but this makes absolutely ZERO sense IMO,i mean i know football is driving this madness, but does any of TPTB stop and think for one second about what this does to the non-revenue sports? Just saying!

Wait, wait, wait, Pitt?!?!

You know the drill, :21 mark.

(if that happens, I'd like an invite to the ACC for the Orange thank you very much. The Big East getting raided by the conference getting dismantled would not look good for the future)

My source is telling me that it's going to be Louisville in the coming weeks that jumps to the SEC. For some reason, there's not as big of an objection coming from Kentucky for Louisville as there is in Florida over FSU.

There's also still the possibility the SEC just jumps aheads and expands to 16 teams. There's a school that said they weren't that IS talking with the SEC. As far as the 16th team, haven't heard any rumblings, just rumors.

Probably because Louisville is still shaking off the after effects of Kragthorpe's misrule. Just leave all basketball revenues to those schools and they are good.

I just don't see Texas going to the SEC. It makes sense geographically... but I think Texas likes being a big fish in a small pond. I mean, its pretty obvious that, that is the way they want to conduct business. I think the PAC-12 has a better shot at them once the Big 12 folds.
