NFL Concepts

So. I haven't done a concept for a while. I decided to start with a minimal change, to a team that's always had a pretty simple, yet strong identity.

I chose the Lions.

Although there was never a complete overhaul, I haven't liked the Lions' identity since they added black. So that's the first thing I eliminated, black. Second; I, along with many others, love the blue road pants they sported back in the nineties. So I included blue pants in the set, for use strictly and exclusively with the white jerseys.

Now the rest of the changes are rather minimal. I actually got the idea for the sleeve and pant striping from the Falcons throwback socks*; and since the Lions formerly had Northwestern-esque striping, I thought it was appropriate (*read this post for more background info).

Finally I gave them some nice striped socks, including white ones that match the white jersey, because I wasn't a fan of the silver socks they wore with the blue pants (and I definitely didn't want any blue socks with blue pants). And their helmet is pretty similar to previous versions, except I used the pant striping for the helmet striping (except symmetrical), and a double outline on the logo.

Hope you all like this, I most likely will be making changes, if need be.

I like it, maybe go with solid blue socks on both sets and a lions nameplate under the collar.

Ya know, I was tempted to put a wordmark under the collar, but decided against it, I may go back and change that.

And as for the suggestion for solid blue socks; I personally think socks with stripes add much needed character to uniforms, and if I were to use blue socks with the blue pants, it would create the much dreaded 'leotard effect'.

Looks great. I love the outlines you added to the Lion. To me that's something the original logo has been lacking for a long time.

It's been outlined in white since 1970, and in black (and white) since 2003.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

Well, I think I've got the hang of this, again. I've decided to give another team a tweaking.

This time it's the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers current uniform set is a mess, in my opinion. I still don't understand why they have a silver pair of pants and a white pair of pants... Or why they have black striping on their helmet, yet the pants have blue striping. SO I decided to both steamline the design and add some consistency. My goal for this set was to successfully make light blue the primary color, while keeping them from looking like the Titans or Lions.

Now the biggest change I made was eliminating silver all together, it's much easier to work with three colors, than four; and to be honest the silver wasn't doing much for me. Second, I made the pant striping a bit more interesting, more steamlined. Then I went ahead and made the helmet white, which goes much better with the white pants (which are the primary option for both jerseys, the blue ones are there because I knew someone would ask to see some hah). Finally, I edited the number font slightly so that it isn't the plain old varsity block. Hope everyone likes my updates, I'd love to hear some C&C.

I applaud you for your attempt, but in my honest opinion their current set is untouchable. I do think that pant stripe is a little more panther-like, but other than that it'd be a downgrade.

Well there's gonna be more than one critic, cause there are enough people that love their current look.

Thanks for the comments, though. I don't expect everyone to like it haha.

Not sure how any designer could ever utter those words. Nothing is untouchable. Some things are just harder to improve than others. Especially on a concept forum, everything is fair game.

That being said, what are you talking about when you say their "unique shade of black" that's "almost navy"? How is their black not... well, black?

Yea I know that doesn't make much sense, and I figured it might raise some eyebrows.

But I figured most would know what I'm referring to, which is this; there current shade of [what people think is] black, really is a dark shade of blue (I guess you could say). That probably makes more sense haha.

What do you think of the concept itself?

No, I'm pretty certain their black is actually black.

Geez, I didn't mean to start any kind of big time discussion here. I was hoping to hear a little bit more about the uniforms themself.
