My (Personal) Baseball League Redesign

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I've been long awaiting to put this series out there next to my football league redesign, since the baseball season is still going strong. I am an avid watcher of baseball, I've been keeping track of the Cubs this season, and unfortunately they're playing horribly so I've gotta find some other ways to fill up my time. Anywho, I've also created my own baseball league in 2007, but none of the teams have really had an identity; my goal then is to rebrand (or brand, for that matter) all 30 teams. The team names aren't necessarily set in stone, as they were just ideas I've had when they were created, so feel free to suggest names and/or cities. My leagues will most likely last me until the rest of summer and probably through it (just trying to progress my logo designing, hopefully adding more solid work to my portfolio). I've been researching alot lately and have been working on developing more solid identities, and I've gotten many ideas sparked in my head with some minor league designs, so consequently this league will be based on the minor league style. On top of that, each team will have 5 uniforms including a batting practice , and will have a maximum of 4 caps.

For this first team, (which was based on the western diamondback rattlesnake population in southern Texas) I wanted to slightly mimic the Arizona Dbacks' look, so I went with the same red and sandy colors, along with a deep forest green. For the primary, I used an out-of-the-box figure 8 wrap-arong with the rattlesnake and the text, again trying to differentiate the team from the Dbacks. The primary is then a sandy colored rattlesnake, with a baseball in it's mouth, wrapping around 'Rattlers'. The shoulder patch is head of the primary with the baseball inside of a green circle. The cap logo is the same rattlesnake head without the baseball. Well, I tried to make it brief, let me know what you think.

The logos and uniforms look great honestly, nice job on those. But I think it looks a little too much like the Diamondbacks. I think if you brighten the green just a little (like closer to the Milwaukee Bucks green but just a tad darker), it will help. To be honest, I couldnt tell it was green until I went back and re-read the intro. Nice job though, keep the others coming!

The opinions I express are mine, and mine only. If I am to express them, it is not to say you or anyone else is wrong, and certainly not to say that I am right.

Very strong work on the snake logo. It's a nice render and interacts with the wordmark well. The wordmark itself, however, seems a bit generic. Especially when they're all alone on the uniforms, the wordmarks seem kinda plain. It would have been nice to have something custom designed or at least a typeface with more personality, serifs, details, something. In baseball, when the wordmarks are so prominent and "on an island," I feel like they need something more than a generic blocky font with a few diamond touches.

The uniforms also feel very generic. Of course, it's baseball, so this look could be called "clean" or "classic," which is perfectly fine. It just would have been good to have seen something more unique to the logo package, instead of the logos slapped onto a plain template.

You really need to address issues with the cap logo. The outline needs to be simplified, and there is a section of floating sand out there. It also seems like you don't have a true alternate logo: both the shoulder logo and the cap logo are just the truncated head from the primary. It would have been nice--especially since this is baseball--to have an alternate logo more focused on type.

All of these issues lead me to believe that this whole thing was a little rushed. It's like you did a primary logo--and the one you produced is VERY strong--and then shoved everything else out the door so that you could show us the nice snake logo you made. I think if you went back and gave this a bit more work--adding personality and depth--then you'd have a very strong set.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Brave-Bird: The only problem I can see is that the colors are relatively close, and I can change that. I tried to differentiate the logos enough so that they don't resemble the Diamondbacks.

Cyclone: I thought about doing that at first, but the sandy color looked a bit too 'cream' to me, but I'll try it.

dgnmrwrw: You make some really good points here, and I agree with most of them. However, I wanted to make the uniforms clean and simple, and I tried to make the wordmark with as less clutter as possible. I may be able to sketch in the rattlesnake tail on to the 'S' and the 'N', though.

I also was thinking about creating a 'Houston Rattlers Baseball Club' logo, but I felt that it would be too generic. I considered doing the state of Texas as a patch, but I wanted to add detail so that they relate to the rest of the logo package. I could whip up one of those two since you highly considered it, and I'll try and touch up on that wordmark.

Updates will be later today, as well as the Louisiana Blues.

The logos and uniforms look great! The snake looks really good.

However, I think you need to make an "H" or "R" logo to put on the hat. Personally, I prefer a letter on the hat and a more detailed logo, in this case the snake head, on the sleeve. That's my only criticism though. Can't wait to see the rest!

The set looks great! But I do agree with some of the points one of the users said above. The uniforms look a little bit too clean and classic to me. Don't get me wrong, I love clean classical uniforms, but the team Houston Rattlers sounds like it should be a little bit more modern. The name just sounds very modern to me. However, if you add some kind of diamond or rattlesnake pattern on the sleeve piping, i think it'll look great.

Just my two cents, but otherwise, it's a GREAT SET and I can't hardly wait for your future set.

Now, if I could propose a new team for you to create down the road, the Iowa Oaks :-) It's my own team that I created, but I would love to see what the team would look like coming from a different perspective.

Calm down, this is from last year.

But this concept is fantastic. Though the extra outline of the snake seems weird. Also, the blood on the ball seems too much. The jerseys are fine though, you can't do much to a baseball jersey and make it look good.

I know that he created that, but it really isn't the first Iowa Oaks in existence. Also I wasn't trying to come off as mean.

I've updated the Rattlers set, I changed up the secondary logo.

Dgnmrwrw: I tried to attatch the snake tail at the end of the wordmark, but the scripts became illegible when I tried to make the lettering the same color as the snake (in order for it to make sense). It just didn't work, so I kept them the same.

RoughRiders9: Sure, I'll take on your team. ;)

So the Louisiana Blues have been one of my oldest baseball teams, and also have been relatively consistant with their colors. The name comes from the Jazz influence in New Orleans in the past, and I've decided to stick with it. The primary features a Blue B (representing the name 'Blues' as well as Bayou State, Louisiana's nickname) with a music note adjacent to it, all on a baseball patch reading 'Louisiana Blues'. For 4 of the 5 caps, the prominant 'B-note' is used from the primary. Now, for the alternate and batting practice unis, I went with something more modern. An all-new secondary is placed on the shoulder of the alt and the chest of the bp, which is a blue circle reading 'Bayou State' around a golden saxophone. The famous fleur-de-lis makes an appearance on the secondary logo as well, again tying the team to Louisiana (and for it's other sports teams for that matter: Saints, Hornets, etc.). The cap logo for the bp is the same saxophone from the secondary logo.

The uniforms are pretty simple between the home and roads, but the blue, pinstriped alternate has more of an old-time-classic feel, using the same pinstriping as the homes.

I like the Rattlers concept, but I see black, not deep forest green. Love the color combo of the Blues, but I would switch the way the saxophone faces so it could represent an L.

Thanks Dolphins91 for the jersey avatars.
