Cole Tweaks the NHL: One Team at a Time.

Finally up, after weeks of trying to fix one of the most broken identities in hockey (in my opinion), I present the Minnesota Wild.

Tackling this team required a strategy. First off, the color scheme of red and green clashes so horribly in my eyes. It can work, in some places, but I just don't think it works at all in the Wild's identity, so that had to go. I actually like the logo the team has, and find it very clever... but the colors had to change. The other big issue that stands between the Wild and a good identity has to do with chronology. A team whose name and logo are so ultra modern that it's hardly even a noun (let alone a plural noun) should NOT try to dress like an Original 6 franchise. Nor should a team that never saw the 1990's, let alone the 1950's.

With this in mind, I gave the Wild some sleek modern threads and a color scheme that while and dreary has a very "Wilderness at night" vibe to it.

The original plan was to give Minnesota a green version of the home jersey as an alternate, but my fiance stepped in the way and said that it was too boring to do that, and helped me put pencil-to-paper on some ideas for an alternate jersey. I settled on a simplistic contrast to the ultra-modern home and road, meant to make subtle reference to the Minnesota North Stars, while still respecting that one team's legacy has nothing at all to do with the other.

I hope you don't hate it, because I put way way WAY too much work into this concept. It just further underscored how much I hate everything about the Wild's identity.

I think these would still work with the green and red.

I'll tell ya what, at first glance at your Wild concept, I was saying to myself "ehhh...I don't think so", but as I do with all concepts, I make sure to take second and third glances, in case anything is to jump out or grow on me. In doing so, the color scheme grew on me. The more I look at it, the more appealing and more fantastic it looks together. I wouldn't say this is your best concept, but I think your hard work at it really paid off. I can tell that there was some great thought put into it, especially regarding the color scheme (which really does fit an outdoors-at-night sort of theme very well). Thus, I think this identity would be a successful and great one if it were ever to hit the ice. And I also love that third jersey crest. That's fantastic. Great job, I'm looking forward to your upcoming work!

The opinions I express are mine, and mine only. If I am to express them, it is not to say you or anyone else is wrong, and certainly not to say that I am right.

For some reason, I just love the Wild colors minus the yellow (not the sand that rules). I think this works, but the NHL ends up losing an unbelievable color set. I actually like the main logo better in these colors, but then again I don't love that logo all too much.

Could we see a Minnesota script jersey? Those are sweeeet

The Wild concept looks good on its own merits, but the color scheme also makes it look way too much like the Timberwolves. If I owned the team I don't think I'd want an identity package that reminded people of a sucky team from a sucky league. :P

I also just came back and took a second glance at these, and for some reason the green looks lighter than before, and the color scheme has grown on me. Recanting my earlier statement, I would keep it just the way it is.

Personally, I've always felt that the Wild's color scheme was overrated. These, however, are awesome. The Aqua(ish) blue and forest green are perfect, don't change anything.

I've got a dribbble, check it out if you like my stuff; alternatively, if you hate my stuff, send it to your enemies to punish their insolence!

seriously... my fiance deserves massive props for that alternate...

i showed her all the logos that the wild currently had, and said why i didn't like most of them enough to use them, and she convinced me that i could salvage the circle logo if i tried... so i tried putting all KINDS of stuff in that circle... i tried the primary logo's head in the circle, like they use now... didn't like it. (the extra outlines i added in the logo made it too muddy when used in the circle)... i tried a single green tree, but that just looked political. i tried the state of minnesota, but that looked boring. i tried a front number IN the circle, and that looked lazy. then i tried cutting and pasting various parts of the logo in there, and that's when she told me that i was on to something. i made a few variations of the same design and didn't like much of them at all. i was about ready to give up on it, but she kept telling me to get over it because the alternate crest looked amazing.

i finally gave up and went with the logo, and by the end of the night, i had grown to love the logo and the third jersey, but i was sure that no one else was going to.

i'm totally with the right woman. lol.

here's one that only required minor tweaking... the vancouver canucks.

things i like about the real canucks uniforms:

the colors are very unique and distinctive.

the striping is bold and traditional, but still varies slightly from what i used on calgary, thanks to the bottom blue stripes engulfing the waist/sleeves.

the hardly-used johnny canuck logo is simply fantastic.

things i HATE about the real canucks uniforms:

none of their logos have anything to do with the team name. an orca isn't a canuck, and the arched wordmark on top of the orca makes an ugly logo into an ugly CRAMPED logo.

they hardly use the johnny canuck, and when they do, they cut his head off?!

the striping on the home and road doesn't match nearly as much as it could (and does in my concept).

their alternate and throwback uniforms are both 20x better than their home and roads.

i tried to address each of these concerns. nothing earth shattering.

random fact: the striping on the alternate was ALMOST plaid. but it just looked waaaay too celtic, and not northwesterny at all, as i'd hoped.

Here is one of the teams that barely needs any tweaks at all. I absolutely adore everything about the Blackhawks uniforms and always have. The logo, the striping, the colors. It's a classic that doesn't need to be changed.

That said, where is the fun in making a concept that doesn't change anything? I did the unthinkable and actually ditched my favorite hockey jersey of all time (the blackhawks white sweater) and tried to come up with some something classic, understated, and more in-line with the home sweater. I hope you don't hate me for it. (I actually have 3 different blackhawks road sweaters on my laptop, and i didn't know which one i was going to use for sure until about an hour ago, and i'm still not entirely convinced i made the right choice.)

The homes are mostly unchanged, with only a slight alteration of the logos, and a return to the classic tie-up sweaters that I think accompanied Chicago's best look (Hull-era).... I also brought back the triple stripe on the sleeves, rather than the white/black/white that they've had for my entire life. The roads try to mimic the look of the home, with a few artistic liberties thrown in just for my own taste's sake.

The thirds are something I'm pretty proud of, but will probably be polarizing. Using the same template as the home and road, I made a solid black and white sweater that nods to the original chicago black hawks uniforms of the 1920's and 30's, but can't be considered a throwback, since the design is entirely different. i kept a few red accents just to give it a bit of a "sin city" aesthetic and add a little modern flavor to it.

so... did i butcher a classic, or come up with something pretty cool in it's own right, without desecrating the best dressed team in nhl history?

The bottom hem on the road white Canucks jersey should be white, not blue IMO. Like the current roads are. It makes the jersey look full and not cut off at the bottom when it overlaps the blue pants.

Other than that, I'm a fan. I would totally be up for a jersey set like that for the Canucks.

I'm Danny fkn Heatley, I play for myself. That's what fkn all stars do.

I really like that you hardly changed the home jersey. I am not sold on the Road jersey. Its a good try but it looks weird. That alternative is awesome, better than their current one. I'd actually like to see that. Jahgee there is nothings wrong with the logo, its classic.
