I cannot think of the last time I ate there. At least a decade. but YUM! Brands has put the brand up for sale. so they change the logo to this:

LJS_Logo.jpg

From NRN (Nation's Restaurant News):

Long John Silver?s has debuted a new slogan, ?We Speak Fish,? in an effort to update the more than 40-year-old seafood brand for a new generation of customers, the chain said Thursday.

The 1,100-unit Long John Silver?s ? which parent company Yum! Brands Inc. is planning to sell ? also is rolling out a new logo and a revamped website, which launches Monday. New merchandising and promotion materials will be phased in over the coming months.

The moves come in time for the season of Lent, when many Christians cut back on their meat consumption in favor of more fish.

?As one of America?s most popular casual seafood restaurants, we are focused on offering our customers delicious, value-priced menu items during Lent and year-round,? said John Villanueva, chief marketing officer for Louisville, Ky.-based Long John Silver?s.

Upgrade?...

Def a lot less hokey, but to me Long Johns has always been kind of a gimmicky eatery. This look seems real clean and refined, when I think of LJS i think of dorky looking fonts, bells and wheels and crap all over the wall and bad smells from the kitchen.

I've never even seen a Long John Silver's, let alone eaten at one. I think I'd rather go to a real fish + chips place if that's what I was hungry for... as much as I like fish, I've eaten one filet o'fish sandwich from McDonald's, and will never try fast food fish again. Even the idea of it is unpleasant.

I actually like the Filet-o'-Fish. It's not actual fish, but it's also not that bad.

I believe it actually is, but once while going through the drive thru with some friends the McDonald's worker told us the fish patties were actually only over processed chicken. For that reason, as false as it may be, I'll never get fast food fish.

For the love of Pete, and for the millionth time...could somebody please tell me how fish isn't a meat?

Ellen DeGeneres can... oh wait, she can speak "whale" not fish!

Huh?

So you don't care that what they're selling you, may not be what they say it is? Man, Americans really will eat anything.

Let me take a crack at the first question. I grew up Catholic (but have since defected), and the way I always understood it was that in the olden days, fish was abundant and inexpensive, and meat was something that one splurged on. The Church's supposed line of thinking was that if people didn't spend all that money on meat one day a week, it would be like a sacrifice (symbolic of any sacrifices that Jesus supposedly made), and the money saved could be given to the Church when the collection plate was passed that Sunday.

On the second question, Ellen voiced a character in Finding Nemo that claimed to be able to speak whale.

Okay, clear on #2. :P

I'm not sold on #1, though. You educated me a little on the roots of the "no meat during Lent", thing. I understand about the abundancy/expense issue probably starting the tradition, even though it doesn't apply so much, today. I wish they would've been more specific though, maybe saying not to eat land or air creatures during Lent. Because by not doing so, they've started the inexplicably common notion that fish isn't meat. Whether you're a Christian or a wanna-be vegetarian, "meat" is the flesh of animal, plain and simple...fish included.

On fish not being meat. I asked a Catholic and he explained that it all has to do with reproduction. Back in the early middle ages/early Christian period they thought fish were plants. Yep.

See it has to do with reproduction. If a species reproduced sexually it was considered an animal. If it didn't, it was considered a plant. Back then they were apparently ignorant of how fish reproduced.

At least that's what I heard. Given the average human's understanding of the natural world at the time, it seems possible.

They need to just sell their breading and sides. No way in hell I'm going there down here when I can get fresh from any one of the fishermen that fished the gulf that same morning.

I need to move to someplace on a coast. Sigh....

On people still being Christians today, then...

...Sorry, that's not a thought for this thread. On topic, the logo is nice, and all...an improvement on the last, but it still doesn't fit the name. I'm a bit of a literalist, and think they're erring by not using pirate imagery. If it's an issue of wanting to look more classy, they need to remember they're a fast food joint.

Well, Catholicism is typically pretty resistant to change, so they probably just couldn't be arsed to change the rules once they figured out that fish were animals.

Talk about a long overdue upgrade.

I think I've eaten at Long John Silver's a grand total of once, and there's none around where I live - like many other national chains, there's almost none in the entire Tri-State Area (not that I'm complaining) - so I was shocked when I opened this thread to see they still had that awful logo.
