NHL 2015 Predictions

hockey week

Recommended Posts

I've been working on this series of concepts for a while and I think it's time I shared some of them. Perhaps the feedback will inspire me to finish out the series.

Like I said in the title, this is not a set of things I wish would happen. You'll see no alternates for the Devils, no adoption of the '46 white jersey for the Canadiens, and no changes to the Rangers' home and road, because let's face it, it's never going to happen.

Please keep criticism to what is realistic, rather than what is most aesthetically pleasing. I don't like some of these, but I find them to be inevitable.

I'll start with one that seems pretty obvious, and one that is more outlandish.

Los Angeles Kings

Based on their playoff choices, the photo from icethetics, and general hockey trends, I think that the following is bound to happen. After a year of dropping the purple third and using the 2010-11 black home jersey as an alternate (which has already been reported), the outcry brings back the purple as a full-time third jersey. After another year of mismatched logos, the Kings front office subtly changes the crown in the home and road to the throwback crown, but in black and silver.

One thing that's a recurring theme throughout, are contrasting-colored Reebok logos, where applicable. If the Reebox has gone by the wayside, what's stopping them from finding other ways to make their logo more pronounced?

And the more outlandish and crazy one (that I still think will happen):

New York Islanders

The home and road will remain unchanged, but a new third jersey will make some waves, and stick around far longer than anybody wants it to. A post on this board reported that some people inside the Islanders organization said the jersey will be black. This jersey, which I assume will be BFBS, is being introduced solely for money, so the Isles will certainly do things to bring in the cash. Script logos are popular right now, and will also appeal to the baseball fans of New York (and let's face it, having the same colors as the Mets is not something to be ignored with this jersey). Of course it will have some homage to the four straight Cups, done here with the four stripes. White sleeve ends and hemline will match the home blues, and combining the multiple stripes with the laceup (orange, like they did with their first edge jersey) will be called "vintage" and "retro", even though the Isles have never worn anything like that. Toss the regular logo on the shoulders, and you have a typical NHL cash-grab 3rd jersey.

Thoughts? Are these realistic predictions? More to come!

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

being honest the Islanders jersey looks horrid, I am not one to be harsh but that is BFBS and that's all it is. try orange instead of black and you may be on to something.

It's a prediction, and the Islanders have said there's a good chance a third jersey will be black.

The Gorton's fisherman doesn't seem that bad to me anymore after seeing those.

Is my Islanders jersey ugly? To hockey fans, it should be. To the average Joe, I don't think it would look anywhere near as heinous as we see it.

But really, does anybody trust the Islanders to do any better with a third jersey? Is it realistic? To say "I wouldn't doubt they'd wear that thing in another 5 years" is about the best compliment you can give this project, even if it is followed by "I hope you're wrong, because that thing is terrible."

To further stoke the fire, I think this one is pretty obvious, but maybe some will be thrown for a loop.

Philadelphia Flyers

Home and Road unchanged

Does anybody really think the Flyers can go without a black alternate for almost a decade? I, for one, cannot. I debated whether or not there should be orange sleeve ends and hemline (or perhaps go orange shoulders), but I figured with how Orange-outs have been pushed, you gotta have a little bit. ...and all of you know they'd do the stupid off-color nameplate that they've adopted, no matter how cheesy it is by now.

Thoughts? Would they wear this?

Edit: Random thought: would that be BFBS? Black is one of their main colors, they've had black jerseys before, but does that exempt them? Also, that's the last black alternate jersey I have right now, for the record.

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

So you think the Islanders will release another abomination like the Fishstick jerseys? The last I heard is that they are releasing a new 3rd jersey next season. Hopefully it's not BFBS & hopefully it will last long enough so that this one never sees the light of day. Nothing against you though, I know it's just a prediction.

In terms of actual predictability, I see the Islanders doing something that dumb. Instead of going with an orange alternate (I liked the pre-Edge version, also), the inept Islanders management will try to find a way to make up for all those empty seats.

Good idea on the concept--I see the Islanders going with a BFBS alternate, as well. Hopefully the Islanders won't look here for ideas. :P

Read the post. This is what he thinks they will do, not what he wants them to do

So... We can't give feedback? Yeah okay...

I can picture that Flyers one now. Ugh.

Feedback is perfectly welcome, but I want this to be different than all of the other "If I Ran the NHL" threads. Please, give your opinion, positive or negative, constructive or unconstructive, I welcome it. However, I don't plan on changing anything unless the criticism is based on realism. If you know something will definitely not be done, like if, hypothetically, I put a lace-up collar on the Flyers jersey, and someone pointed out that they've never worn one, and wouldn't start now, I'd definitely make that change.

What I'm even more interested, is for people to toss in their own ideas, especially about the teams they follow. I'm currently at a loss for Nashville. I have some ideas, but speculation is at a minimum, so I'd love to hear what's being tossed around in the Music City. With Ottawa's new vintage third (which I'm still debating how to tackle), will they change their home and road? I'd love to hear some debate on that. And so on and so forth.

I do honestly think the Islanders will do something that dumb again. That's assuming that the team is still there, and even though there hasn't been much news, I haven't heard anything saying that the threat is gone. I think the Isles are very willing to play with their image a bit, now that they have people happy with throwbacks (I know that doesn't make much sense, but it's the Islanders). The difference now, is that I think they learned not to rebrand the team, a la the fishsticks or the edge jerseys, but to introduce things as third jerseys, and go from there. This one? Purely a cash-grab, and personally I think the design reflects that. Then again, I'm a bit biased lol.

Thank you. In a way, the jersey has kind of grown on me (it helps that it's my own creation, I'm sure), but just like how Ottawa touted it's SENS jersey as a "heritage jersey" (as bullcrap as it was), I think the Isles would have an easy time pushing "lots of stripes + script logo = vintage", taking Buffalo's third jersey success and completely screwing it up.

What about the rumored Pens third? I heard it's supposed to be a 'mixing of the eras'.

Ask and ye shall receive. I definitely think the Winter Classic jersey will take over in the 2011-12 season. However, the Pens are known for changing jerseys to make money, and this one would be no exception. Lemieux doesn't like robopenguin or the old 91-92 jerseys that everybody wants to see return. He also loves the blue/blue. Taking that into consideration, along with the recent trend toward navy blue, I put together the last few eras (1985-2000 not included...ish) that have not been used.

Pittsburgh Penguins

penguins3rd.jpg

Everybody loves the jerseys with PITTSBURGH across the chest, even though I've never been a fan. Put those on the 1976-79 jerseys, which are similar to the cup-era jerseys, and throw on a lace-up (because you know the Penguins would), and you have an easy candidate for a new third jersey for 2015. The execution on the chest lettering probably could have been better (tougher than I thought it would be!), and the striping not being perfectly exact is on purpose. Just like the 2011 Winter Classic jerseys, they're fauxback.

My question, and I open this up to debate (as well as the above questions), would the Pens change their home and road jerseys? They're Reebok lackeys, as much as I loathe that fact. Would Reebok have a new trend that the Penguins would model?

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

Tampa Bay Lightning

The lightning have made a drastic change for this upcoming season, and a great many people are upset by it. However, in the next few years, I think as many people will be calling this "iconic" as they do the edge jersey era logo (the one that was called "bad clip art" when unveiled) when it came time to change it. Tampa has been listening an awful lot to their fans, which might be the beginning of a paradigm shift in front offices across the country. Knowing that the Lightning already have changes planned (to add victory stripes), and have officially added black to the numbers (but admitted it was too late to change the uniforms), I think they will quietly make the changes that all of us are clamoring for. Subtle, simple changes over the next 2-3 years, and possibly going to black pants and helmet, though I'm not holding my breath. Without further ado, my prediction for the bolts (who will drop that silly third jersey after next year).

lightningblue.jpg

lightningwhite.jpg

thin black stripes will be subtle, yet brings black back into the color scheme, which everybody wants, and really makes those stripes pop. by 2015, the logo will have been around long enough to drop the "TAMPA BAY" script from the whites. A black alternate might be in the future plans, but this ownership seems to appreciate that less is more, and should hold off for some time.

Thoughts? Will the Lightning make these changes? Any speculation on some of the teams I haven't done?

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.

The only thing missing for the Lightning is a thin black trim around the crests and shoulder logos.

Do you really think they'd do it? To subtly change a jersey is one thing, but I imagine changing the logo slightly would be a media/merchandising nightmare

I'll respect any opinion that you can defend.
