Patchey13
This is a really nice update. I love the way you rendered the bird.
uniguy22
Great job with that last update. I like the yellow beak and legs. The whole thing looks very professional.
crashcarson15
I really love this. You took a bottom 5 crest in the premiership and made it a top 5 crest. Well done.
9erssteve
Nudging this northward again with what I think may be the final version. After some off-board discussions, the crest shape and outlining has been changed a bit. There's also a new yellow color, and the orange is gone completely. The tail of the bird has also been tweaked a bit.Big thanks to everyone who's posted in this thread as well as Avenger, gordie_delini, Shmee, and Leopard88 who've given advice elsewhere.Oh, and comments are still very welcome.Dont take this the wrong way but this right here is probably the finest example of why people, and I include myself in this, can NEVER do to much research! Yes on first glance it looks like a decent logo, perhaps even an upgrade over what they currently have. It's certainly in a more modern style at least. But when you stop to actually look at it in detail there are a fair number of things in this version, which is good, that stop it being great!Take for example the wing, yes we all know it's stylised, but I'm sorry stylised or not, that's what you think a wing should lookk like and not based on how they actually are. Same can be said for the tail. But worst of all are the legs! I'm sorry but every time I look at this I think of big bird off seaseme street! ONE look at a photo of a real canary and you'd see that birds legs, well the skinny part people call birds legs, bend the opposite way to human legs! Right now your canary looks like a guy in a costume! Why am I being so harsh you might ask? Simple, you're clearly TALENTED when it comes to using which ever software it is you use and it pretty much breaks my heart to see what could be a truly amazing logo and a genuine upgrade to an existing logo fall short becausenot enough decent research went into the bird/animal/thing they are making a logo of! It's the BIGGEST reason for logo failures on this or any other board, and it's also the advice that's most often ignored, because it's not "fun"! I'm not saying you've ignored it directly but others have and I'm sure by now everyone who's been on these boards for more than a month has heard me or someone else rant about the lack of it in one thread or another. But it was true in those other threads, it's true here and WILL BE TRUE FOREVER! The more research you do, and I mean looking at ACTUAL images of what you want to create first then other peoples representations of the same subject, the BETTER the end product will be. People always ask why Davidson's logo's are so great, and the truth is HE'S SHOWN EVERYONE EXACTLY HOW, he works from SOURCE! He looks IN DETAIL at his subject and simplifies and refines from ACTUAL images, there's no guessing or imagining. Only simplification and stylisation which are two VERY different things! This is a decent start, but with some real research it could be a FANTASTIC finished piece. Dont stop yet there is still room for massive improvement!9erssteve
-kj
Steve,Thanks for the advice. As I looked at more and more example photos, I saw what you were talking about. Here's a new version; I'm not entirely satisfied, I think, but it's a start: Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! -kj
I looked this over again, and I felt that while the new bird was closer to being a true canary, I'd taken too much personality out of the bird. So, I updated again to try and put some of that back:The proportions of the castle wall at the top are changed a bit. I also decided to see what it would look like with the founding year in the opening of the wall; I'm sure this is over-complicating things, but I kinda like the effect.I'm still soliciting constructive dialog; I really want to polish this until it shines. curswine
I preferred the first form of the canary, it had a much more dynamic look and actually looked like a canary where as this one to me looks more pigeon like. Also the composition now looks off since you've moved the ball off center. Still good of course, just this seems a step backwards personally. Primal
I prefer this new canary... first one looked like it was trying to fly off with the ball in its talons and failing. This pose seems a lot more natural. My only concern is that I'm struggling to see the castle in this version and keep seeing two eyes, a nose with '1902' on it and a wide open mouth with a lion, a canary and a football in it... But, trust me: this one definitely looks more like a canary than the old one; steve was right. I do see the pigeon similarities, and I've made some tweaks to try and change that:My only concern is that I'm struggling to see the castle in this version and keep seeing two eyes, a nose with '1902' on it and a wide open mouth with a lion, a canary and a football in it...That's... uh... you should share. -kj
Well, I did get excellent off-board advice from a couple of board members. I'll share the results:Again, still looking for thoughts on this. I realize it's not as exciting as a recolored NBA logo, but it's what I got. Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! -kj
I took a few days away from this, then decided to mess with it again tonight. raysox
Pretty good, and a huge improvement from the current. I do like how the bird resembles the current, now. I love the non crest mark, too. -kj
Sure, what the hell. I went relatively simple, echoing what Errea has done with their first City kit. I did add a little flair to the collar and cuffs:For the away, I tried to pay homage to possibly my favorite City away kit, though I ended up taking it a bit of a different direction: Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! -kj
After a few tweaks (reflected in the version above), I thought I'd throw in a side-by-side comparison of my current version and the current crest: Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! aawagner011
If you could somehow manage to center the ball within the crest and find the balance of placing the bird atop the centered ball, this would be mint. I feel like that's the only thing holding it back. I've been following your progression on this one since the start, and each update has been phenomenal. anotherday
I agree that it might be a little better to shift the ball to the left, maybe not even absolutely centered just a cm or 2. The tail might even look nice with its tip flowing into the crests yellow outline? Other than that, they would do well to adopt your redesign. It takes heavy cues from the traditional crest and makes it very contemporary while also tightening up the overall look quite a bit. Well done. -kj
Hm, you both make good points. I tried getting it to the center, but it just doesn't work well. However, I tried out moving it to the left; I'm still not convinced by the results:Here's a comparison between the last version and this one (new version on the right): Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop!
