but that's where subtle touches like our new number font come in. Those are amplified on top of a simple look-- making something seemingly irrelevant mean much more.

See, I don't think that number font is any good - though I guess I don't really have a problem with the use of it on the 'Michigan State' wordmark. To me those little indent thingies don't signify anything (like say a beveled font denotes 'monumentality' if that's a word, or an italics font denotes speed) AND they make the number less legible, which is the only thing a font can't do on a uniform. Maybe I could go with something a bit more original than a varsity font (although there are many varsity fonts but almost all the 8s look exactly alike) but I just think the current MSU number font breaks the one rule it shouldn't, legibility.

That concept should've been their pro combat this year. Just replace the red with either green or white.

Well, the guy requesting it wanted a '300' feel to it (if you look at the player's left side, you will see the red drapes down the back of the uni like a cape would) but yea, I agree that the main colors should be green or white.

I don't understand what you mean by "less legible", there's really no number that is unrecognizable in the set. As for the significance:

"Typography/Wordmarks

A custom display face (Spartan Bold), which is used in the MICHIGAN STATE and SPARTANS logos, has been designed to enhance the overall identity system by using inspiration from Greek architecture and the Spartan ethos of simplicity and strength."

I would tend to agree with that. Simple and strong. Like the uniforms.

If you want to say that the font is 'simple and strong', fine, that's a matter of subjective opinion. My subjective opinion is that a notch-less normal number font would look 'stronger' because it is more intact and not missing a piece that appears to have been chipped away and I think it would be 'simpler' without them.

But again, that is just a matter of opinions, no right answer.

HOWEVER, in college I minored in Classical Studies (ancient Greek and Roman history) and even more specifically, my degree was focused on art and architecture of those cultures, and that font and those numbers don't resemble ANYTHING in Greek architecture. Zero. What an agora or a Corinthian column has to do with those letters and numbers is beyond me. Actually, no. That implies that their might be truth to that statement. Rather, someone liked how those letters and fonts looked (the Greek alphabet looks nothing like English and the number system we have comes from Arabic hundreds of years later) and then came up with that crock of PR bull :censored:.

And the Spartan 'ethose' was more along the lines of, "Survive the agoge (rigorous warrior training that started in childhood), kill the helots (their enslaved population that was greater than the free-citizen population) and die in a victorious battle." They weren't really the upstanding moral people TV and movies have made them out to be. They were kinda :censored:s who - if they still did these things today - would be considered one of the worst cultures on earth.

...oh, and they were famous for exclusively wearing red in battle to hide all wounds.

Today we wrap up the rivalry series with a game too big for a trophy. The Big Game:

OSU_UM_Rivalry_1.jpg

Michigan: As a BigTen alumnus, it's very hard for me to conceive Michigan wearing anything but their normal helmets, blue jerseys and maze pants at The Big House. While I actually liked the fauxback they wore against Notre Dame, but I didn't want to re-tread the ground adidas already walked. Instead, I made minor changes to the current home uni and left one of the best lids in all of sports untouched. The jersey gets an 'M' logo sewn onto the shoulder as sort of a 'pride-patch'. While a player's name and number are usually the only thing to grace a Wolverine uni, I wanted the 'M' to be on there to remind the players that the glory of the game should go to Michigan. While I added a blue belt to the pants, I removed the 'M' logo from them just to simplify the uni even more. The shoes and compression shirt are team colors but I'm not sure how much even I am digging the maze sleeves.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes are Nike Pro Combat veterans at this point. With the theme of most of their NPC unis being 'fauxback' I continue this trend with a look back to the late '60s (just on the cusp of one of their greatest eras like hopefully this will be). While I could not find the exact specifics of the road uniform that matches this helmet, these jerseys, pants and socks probably approximate the jersey pretty well. The differing color TV numbers are a signature part of OSU's look from this era and the Northwestern stripes that adorn the helmet, jersey, pants and socks unify this set as a world class Ohio State uniform.

Ohio State is a nice change from their normal uniforms. You could have done so much more with Michigan though. I would've liked a yellow face mask.

Why you make fun of me? I make concept for Auburn champions and you make fun of me. I cry tears.
Chopping off the dicks of Filipino boys and embracing causes that promote bigotry =/= strong moral character.

Are we gonna see concepts for the Old Brass Spittoon, the Little Brown Jug, the Megaphone between ND and MSU and the Shillelagh between ND and Purdue at some point?

probably not, these were B1G concepts and ND isn't a B1G team, as for the other trophy games that are in the B1G, these rivalry sets were sorta like my "one-off"/Nike Pro Combat uniform concepts. Not much point in repeating them, is there?

These type of templates really make it difficult to show the design - especially when there's shoulder/sleeve stripes. Just not a fan of it, when I do concepts I want them to be both visually appealing and easy to view. Just my 2 cents.

With this comment in mind I decided to edit my template and make everything a bit clearer with two perspectives:

Thoughts?

BTW, I have no idea why I decided to do Minnesota first...

You know, I like the idea of the special 'rivalry game' looks for the teams here. It's very unique for the games the represent (Especially 'The Game'... Also got a kick of the tagline because it's true: Some games just don't need any trophies).

One thing I do want to ask about the Minnesota jersey you have: What kind of yellow is that? It looks like a mustard like yellow, but I could be wrong.

Well, I tried to match this yellow (maybe athletic gold?):

and what I thought it might look like in real life, but i could probably add a bit of red to it to get a bit closer to the yellow seen in that image.

Thanks for the complements on the rivalry series, but drdougfresh deserves some credit for the idea, too. I'm pretty sure I stole the idea from him accidentally... Whoops. haha

EDIT: maybe closer to this for Minn:

Im likin' what I'm seein'! The only thing I would change about the template is to make the background standardized, use neutral colors in it, maybe accents using the teams colors, but it just takes alot away from the presentation for me with that gradient in the background... I would prabably put it in some kind of natural setting. Standing on grass with lights behind them. I also didnt really like that about the background of your baseball temp (which otherwise is awesome, I might add.)

Keep 'em coming!

Today we end this long, bizarre, tangential odyssey with Wisconsin:

Almost no change here, the only thing I do with them is insist that they never wear red pants. Without red pants, Wisconsin more clearly defines it's images from that of Nebraska and Indiana (nut especially Nebraska). At Home there's just too much red and with the Road, it makes them look even more like Nebraska (something they don't need any help doing).

Badgers_NPCwH_H_1.jpg

Needs to be cardinal (however you define that) and not (Nebraska) red.

Also, I disagree with your white-pants thing. The Michelin Man look is almost never attractive. If you want to differentiate from Husker U, why not a road red helmet to go with the red pants? (UW had two sets of helmets in the '50s.)
