There was another rumor floating around that groups from Atlanta & Houston were meeting with Bettman in New York last week.
That's probably more related to the expansion talks that have been ongoing. I think all the rumors are aligning right now for the Coyotes to be SLC or bust at this point and Smith probably already has a handshake agreement.
Of course, the interesting wrinkle in all of this is Seravelli's speculation that Meruelo's going to sell the team and still build the arena in hopes of getting a Browns deal. Considering how much red tape that they need to cut through that's probably the only real option lest the Coyotes stay in the Mullet until 2031.

You keep harping on this. The announcement just confirmed what had already been baked into the conditions of the auction. Again, it's confirmation that Meruelo can't crawl the Scottsdale to save a few million dollars by saving on two miles of utility conduit. It's also a warning shot that you can expect Scottsdale to get their lawyers involved due to the impacts it's going to be experiencing.

Being across the street from Scottsdale doesn't mean anything. The plan has always been for the Coyotes to develop the land themselves without relying on infrastructure from Scottsdale. The 64th Street off ramp the mayor mentioned is completely within the Phoenix city limits, so that also has nothing to do with Scottsdale. The N Scottsdale road off ramp is fine, and handles plenty of traffic every year during the Waste Management Open.
You assume that was always the plan. The Mayor flat out said in his statement that the auction must specify that all utilities come from Phoenix so he’s flat out stating that saving millions of dollars by hooking up across the street is off the table.
Also, you can’t just put a major development on a shared road with another city and tell them to pound sand. If that off-ramp isn’t completely upgraded Scottsdale is fully within their rights to take Phoenix to court since their infrastructure will be impacted by the increased traffic.

Well the arena isn't going to be in Scottsdale, and the Coyotes already planned to use Phoenix infrastructure for the development. Not sure why anyone cares about this guy's opinion.
Because the arena is across the street from Scottsdale and the site, being a vacant patch of sand, will need to have nearly two mile-long sewers and water mains built as a result, plus the team will still be on the hook for completely reconfiguring a highway offramp that serves Scottsdale being as how the whole complex is right across the street.

I’ve been to hundreds of RiverCats games (including briefly being a mascot for them in high school) and it’s one of my favorite parks in all of baseball. The view of downtown is phenomenal. I can definitely see the comparisons.Points like this get lost in the A's/Coyotes comparisons. The Coyotes had to downgrade to a gimmicky arena meant for college kids that they had to build a temporary annex to bring up to code. The A's get an immense upgrade in atmosphere combined with functioning plumbing.

There are now teenagers who undergo Tommy John surgery, so it's preemptive in the sense that it happens before they've ever been signed to a major-league contract. We're doing something wrong if we're making kids throw so hard and so often that they need to switch out a tendon by age 17.
It’s also a product of early specialization. Kids no longer are jumping from baseball to basketball to soccer. Now they jump from high school season to travel ball season.

Blizzards meets the quota of Zees/Zeds in a Utah team name so that checks.
Although, something to be said for the southwest and teams naming themselves after a lower-ranked version of their closest rival. Already Kings? Throw in the Knights next door. Already a team named for snow rolling down a hill? Name the team after snow falling from the sky.

It ain't the pitch clock, kids. It's trying to throw 130mph on every pitch.

The only thing that this has over the UFL 1.0 is that the teams at least have their own colors and not all variations of gray/blue/neon green.

Nothing says “unapologetically Philly” like wearing black and blue, the colors your skin turns after getting in a fist fight in the stands at the Vet in 1987.

Cool, so now both California AL teams, both of which beginning with A, are going to be downplaying their location.

For the record, the chef’s kiss of the Iowa/LSU game was that the PA announcer sounded like the reincarnation of Howard Finkel.

No way. The only times that a team nickname has been retired were when the two Washington Senators franchises (the original one and the expansion team) moved to other cities. Unlike the name "Senators", which would not make sense outside of Washington, the name "Athletics" can work anywhere. The move is going to be bad enough; to dump the historic name would compound the tragedy. The A's name has survived multiple moves. It deserves to live on.
Agreed. This is apples and oranges to the Cleveland deal. The Browns were born in Cleveland and were a symbol of Cleveland when the deal was made. The A's are in their third stop. Oakland demanding the name stay there is ignoring the history in KC and Philly and demanding that the colors stay is ignoring that the colors, granted starting out much brighter, were a KC product before the team moved into the Coliseum.

So it's fine if us civilians decide to stay somewhere for the lifestyle and weather even though we know things might be better and more lucrative elsewhere, but ballplayers hurt their legacies if they do the same thing?
Most of us civilians aren't aspiring to enter the halls of fame of our respective professions so yes, that's perfectly fine.

Banks and Trout are apples and oranges. One was forced to remain on the same team, the other clearly saw how inept ownership was and still took a hometown discount to stay. If you go era by era, you can’t fault Banks but you certainly can fault Trout.
And sure, enjoy the lifestyle and lack of interesting meteorological phenomena that pique your interest but don’t expect that to help your legacy as a player.

I'd be honesty shocked if they don't postpone at least one Dodger game this weekend as rare as postponements are here. Imagine people trying to navigate that parking lot in a downpour.

Nah, knowing the pace of these things the Pirates will be eliminated far before then.
