  1. All I think of when I see the new Stl stadium renderings if how is this better than the current dome. Besides being open air, having field suites, and nicer video boards I don't see anything nicer than the current dome. Two of these three things could be added in the current stadium. The dome is dull, but it has a club level, loge boxes, suites, plenty of restrooms and concessions, and its one of the easier stadiums to navigate of the 100 or so I've visited. I'm also skeptical of all this supposed extra convention business the dome will suddenly get if the Rams are gone. When I went to the car show last year they only used a quarter of the dome for some BS exhibits. 15 years ago the entire dome was used for new model displays. I think the convention business is not as big as people think and the supply of convention centers only gets bigger as more cities throw tax money at them. To me, the dome's only real problem was that it was leased to the Rams with one of the dumbest leases ever constructed. I know they were desperate to get a team back but still...
  2. I posted this comment earlier today on an article about St. Louis' new soccer team. Wish I had heard about Yard Goats first because it's a more ridiculous example. "I would much rather be FC and let a nickname develop organically than to have a "name the team" contest and end up with some crazy minor league name like the Akron Rubber Ducks (that's a real baseball team)."
  3. There was rumors of MLS shortening its schedue. Qatar World Cup year would be a great time to try that out, if it actually happens.
  4. Lots of speculation on twitterverse from so called "insiders" that one team would move to NFC and either team would be fine with it. Remember, only you can help stop reel-line-mints. Also it will be funny if one of these teams has to crawl back to their current home and say they're sorry because nobody is moving to London until supersonic air travel is a thing again.
  5. The city or state could own the new stadium and let Stan run it or something (hopefully without the management fee that Indy and Glendale thought was a good idea). There's lots of ways to make that work. Lots of teams have de facto control of their buildings even though they don't own them.
  6. I like how the Cavs banners look consistent while still having era specific logos.
  7. If Portland somehow got a team, Reser or Autzen would have to be used. The NFL wouldn't let a 20K stadium fly, even temporarily.
  8. Imagine if all these teams were in one league: Rubber Ducks, Chihuahuas, RailRiders, Ironpigs, Fightin Phils, Storm Chasers, Blue Wahoos, Flying Squirrels (the only one I like, probably since it was among the first of this style of identity) I like the Rubber Ducks name. They could have had a simple/clean yet fun logo that looked like an actual rubber duck. And this only stops if teams choose a different designer: “Are we in the baseball business or in the circus business? We’re in the circus business” #bnconf #quips — Brand New Conference (@bnconf) September 13, 2013
  9. Nope. And if I remember, they played in Memphis for a season. I think the Oilers would've gone to L.A. or maybe even some sort of deal with Cleveland? Why did they keep the Oilers name/identity after moving? Was there a plan to keep it and then changed it; or was there a plan to change it all along? Maybe... New Orleans or OKC? New Orleans for sure. They were a very close 2nd in landing the Grizzlies. OKC wasn't even a thought back then. From what I've read Bud Adams wanted to keep the team's name as the Tennessee Oilers, but fans found that ridiculous. Tennessee Copperheads was thrown out as a possibility but Titans was ultimately chosen to pay homage to Nashville's nickname as the "Athens of the South". Also, now that I think of it, Louisville was seriously considered for the Grizzlies also (this was pre Yum Center and U of L getting complete control of that building)...they were going to build a new arena called the KFC Bucket!
  10. Well I believe if Memphis had gotten a team they'd be in the same boat as St. Louis is now, as I believe Memphis was basically offering the Liberty Bowl as it is now and surely the Hound Dogs would be howling for a new stadium by now. Also, I wonder where the Grizzlies would have gone because Memphis does not have enough population/income to support two pro teams.
  11. The SPHL survives because it pays the players so low. The Mississippi Riverkings (Memphis suburbs) moved from the CHL to SPHL two years ago to lower player costs. They average 2500 a game and somehow manage to survive.
  12. The Astros situation was because the team was being sold. I don't think the sale would have been approved without them agreeing to go to the AL. If any teams on the east/west border are sold in the next few years, I bet the NHL would do the same thing to them or insert some clause allowing the league to put them wherever the needed them to be.
  13. If I owned the Coyotes and were moving them to Seattle, I'd keep the Coyotes name until the new arena was built, kind of how the Titans played as the Oilers in TN for two years while LP Field was built. I'd especially do it if the alternative was rushing to create a OKC Thunder quality logo.
  14. I guess Charlotte Bobcats vs. New Orleans Pelicans will be rare, NBA vote pending. Also, Tennessee Oilers vs. anyone.
  15. The only thread I've found more mind-boggling was the one about the Lake County Fielders, and it wasn't nearly this long. To refresh your memory, the Fielders played in a temporary stadium for two years, drew peanuts, refused to complete road trips to Hawaii, coaches had to pay baggage fees for players, and they ended with a 15 or so game series against another team called the Fielders.
  16. one correction...Memphis is Cowboys and Steelers country, with some liking the Titans but others resentful that they used Memphis as a stopover on the way to Nashville and didn't play the 2nd year as planned at the Liberty Bowl...The then Oilers also made no effort to market to Memphis as the state's team during their stay, only coming to Memphis for games and practicing in Nashville. Interesting map below shows NFL loyalties based on most facebook likes.
  17. I was trying to think of a way to keep all the teams in their own time zone as much as possible, especially DET and CBJ. It was inspired from the way the ECHL used to do playoffs where the different conferences had different bracket setups to minimize excessive travel.
  18. Here's a nuttier NHL realignment idea I came up with tonight (based on 32 teams, yes I know): Campbell Conference Pacific: SEA Coyotes, LA, SJ, ANA, CAL, EDM, VAN, Central: STL, CHI, MIN, WPG, DAL, NAS, COL Wales Conference Atlantic: NYR, NYI, NJ, PIT, PHI, CAR, WAS, CLB, DET Eastern: TB, FL, BOS, BUF, TOR, Markham Not the Leafs, OTT, QUE, MTL Season format: out of division 2x, all other games in division (4 or 5 meetings in the Wales, 5 or 6 in the Campbell) Campbell Conference Playoffs: Pacific Champion vs. Wild Card Central Runner-Up vs. Pacific 3 Pacific Runner-Up vs. Central 3 Central Champion vs. Wild Card Reseed based on record for 2nd round. Wales Conference Playoffs: 4 wild cards instead of 2, wild cards play one game to determine who advances, then playoffs run like Western Conference Campbell teams have a 57% chance of making playoffs. (8 of 14) Wales teams have a 56% chance of making playoffs, including the play-in games (10 of 18) Everyone except Colorado, Calgary, and Edmonton is in a division of teams in the same time zone. Colorado is behind the rest of their division so games starting at 6 p.m. MT is not as big of a deal.
  19. Yeah I hope Dodger Stadium stays and becomes a classic. The upgrades they're doing this offseason seem to be quite nice. Would it be feasible to put an NFL stadium on the Chavez Ravine property with Dodger Stadium staying? I imagine parking garages would be needed and a light rail line.
  20. I stopped believing the B1G cared about "cultural fit" once they added MD and Rutgers. It's all about BTN now.
  21. Don't 100% remember if they're doing it still this year, but the Blues have done similarly with Ameren UE power company sponsoring their power play, I believe. Yes they do. I still don't get why a monopoly needs to advertise. The craziest sponsorship I've seen was at a Blues game during intermission. They bring the house lights, scoreboard, LED screens, and sound down to make it seem like a power outage. Then they start playing "I've got the power" by Snap and then everything comes back up and there is a commercial for Peabody Energy (a coal company). Scared the crap out of me first time I was there for it. Sometimes I am convinced the Scottrade Center only has music from the day it opened in 1994. (90s Jock Jams songs).
  22. I used to think, like others, if the A's left the Coliseum, they could tear down everything that's not Mount Davis and build a new half on the other side. But Mt. Davis was built the same time as the Ed Jones Dome, so surely that wouldn't be acceptable to an NFL team today.
  23. I agree meadowlander. But no one wants to be the mayor "responsible" for losing a team. Somehow the cities are going to have to collectively organize themselves against the sports leagues if they want this to stop. Don't see that happening though.
