If these uniforms are going to stick around (and of course they are, money's going to trump aesthetics 11 times out of 10 in modern pro sports,) the Mariners need to make adjustments as urgently as anyone. I never liked the switch to three-layer letters and numerals that forced in silver, but with the size reduction and new "I can't believe it's not screen printed" twill eliminating the sparkle of the silver, the two outer layers completely disappear at any distance. They look like Rays jerseys when the M's are pitching.

Improved moisture wicking capabilities.

Dodgers players are reportedly wearing last year's pants for Opening Day. Someone will have to track the belt loops to see if anyone else follows suit.

They'll point to a team like the Panthers and say something about how modern uniform cuts make shoulder numbers almost vestigial, and that the idea of "TV numbers" need not apply in the age of HD.

Really it's because they get to charge the same price for thousands upon thousands of replica jerseys whose margins inched up just a little by eliminating two print locations.

I just can't shake a parallel here to the University of Houston wearing Oilers knockoff uniforms. These look and feel like there's a school named Houston Tech or something, it's their first year of D-II football, and they really want to make a connection to the big team in town, but this is as close as they could get with the available stock options in the Don Alleson catalog.

Maybe the full set proves out. But I'm not seeing anything above a lateral move so far.

I think this is completely unfair to Under Armour, who we all know are fully capable of designing garbage templated football uniforms all on their own, without any outside assistance.

So the XFL teams stay not-good and the USFL teams get uglier.

Johnson tepidly expressing support yesterday gives me hope, in that anything he puts his weight behind seems to burst into flames in short order. * It is much more important for him to build a winning team in Chicago than to make money.

* He expects the entire cost of the stadium - $2 billion - to be paid for with the hotel tax, bonds and the TIF district scheme. In other words, not a penny out of his pocket.

* If the deal doesn't get approved really soon and he dies, his family will sell Jerry's stake to the other White Sox owners. And while Jerry, dear sweet Jerry, would never move this franchise out of Chicago, well, there no telling what all those other owners would do, but he has an inkling!

* What happens to Comiskey, that stadium the state still owes money on 33 years later, when the Sox move? I dunno, rip off the upper deck and make the Fire move there or something. Not his ballpark, not his problem.
