  1. So a local young professionals group decided that an unincorporated suburb of New Orleans needed a flag. The Jefferson Chamber Young Professionals unveiled their flag for Metairie - an unincorporated area on the east bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish (county for everyone else int he country). From the linked article below:

    Quote

The most notable attributes of the flag are its three golden fleurs and coeurs de lis (flowers and hearts of the lily) balanced in a coupling of trinity arrangements, respectively representing tradition, wisdom, prosperity, opportunity, faith, and innovation. The red and blue foundation and aspirational thin, white stripe signify the principles of natural liberty and equal justice guiding a limited, transparent government.

The flag’s silent motto is “Ardentibus Cordibus Floremus” or, more simply, “With ardent hearts, we flourish.” This maxim is an overture to the strength and potential of Metairie, its people in collaboration with the community from freshly blossomed couer de lis to fully mature fleur de lis, continually renewing and growing.

G*ddamn Baby Cakes. Just....kill the franchise and start over with a local owner that won't name the team after what they think a KING CAKE BABY is called. Beignets, okay. WT-HOLY-F IS A BABY CAKE???

    Angry local just whining here...

I'm right there with ya. Po' Boys would have been so much better (even if it is equally as cheesy).

On yesterday's episode of Harry Connick, Jr.'s talk show, the host did a segment in which he read a real news headline, and then did some musical joke while sitting at the piano.  One of the headlines was "New Orleans AAA baseball team changes name to 'Baby Cakes'".  After that one, Connick (a New Orleans native) basically stopped the bit, and said something to the effect of "No joke for this one; it's just a bad idea".

    Well....he ain't wrong.

No, they're not-- as a lot of our board has posted here, they are quite tasty and some posters are wanting some now.

Coco: Where did you have it?  Where di it come from? What brand was it? Was the dough braided underneath the icing, or not?

Sounds like it wasn't a REAL New Orleans King Cake..

Yeah, a good king cake will have the cinnamon flavor in the dough braids....and a good amount. I still, personally, prefer a cream cheese-filled king cake to a traditional, though.

  5. I

    HATE

    EVERYTHING

Not one person I know thinks this is a good change. NO ONE uses the term "Baby Cake." I gotta get my hands on a Zephyrs hat before they're gone from stores here. But this is what happens when an owner from outside of the region decides the team name needs to be more "New Orleans." To be honest, the 3 finalists they picked were all pretty bad and lacked any real "New Orleans" ties. I would have been fine with Crescents, PoBoys, Krewe, Rougarous or even Crawfish over this garbage. I do think the logos are mostly nice. The hat logo isn't bad....but I can't bring myself to buy anything with any of these new logos because it would make me an accessory to this crime.

Not to offend the original creators of those concepts, but...  who would buy them?  I mean, the artwork is solid, but I just don't see a big market for printing and framing some random graphic designer's idea of a sports team concept.  Setting aside my design inclinations for a moment, as purely a sports fan I would rather buy a poster of my favorite player (see: photograph) or maybe something that showed the history of my team's uniforms.

These guys all seem like some 6th grader who figured out how to open a simple eStore (all the websites are cookie cutter) and they just post random Google Image results that apparently, people will pay $5 for.  If you're that hard up for a printed image of a concept, why not just download it and head to the UPS Store yourself?

Agreed. Chances are that most everything "available" on that site for purchase has never once been purchased.

  7. Seven finalists for new Zephyrs team name unveiled

New Orleans Baby Cakes: A tribute to the Mardi Gras king cakes where small plastic babies are sought after, the Baby Cakes celebrates a unique Louisiana tradition.

New Orleans Crawfish: Pays tribute to those lovable and tasty critters we hold festivals for, and who call New Orleans home.

New Orleans King Cakes: The King Cake tradition bring families and community members together to celebrate the joyous season of Mardi Gras, just like Minor League Baseball draws families together.

New Orleans Night Owls: Both a play on words and an alliteration, Night Owls celebrates the New Orleans nightlife and a night out at the ballpark.

New Orleans Po’boys: A tribute to the culinary capital of the Gulf Cost, this fun name falls in line with other wacky names Minor League Baseball is known for.

New Orleans Red Eyes: New Orleans Red Eyes honors Louisiana’s crawfish festivals, and the bright red crawfish New Orleans love.

New Orleans Tailgators: Alligators are synonymous with Louisiana, and tailgating is synonymous with baseball.

    This is SOOOOO bad.

In a move which should shock nobody, tomorrow, Idaho is expected to announce their intention to play FCS starting in 2018.

And the Big Sky football membership swells to 14 now......I think that's too many in FCS. Do we see a Big Sky schism in the future? I don't believe that divisions is plausible for football since they can't have a conference championship game and still participate in the playoffs.
