Former running back Robert Smith claims to have started it in the mid-90s. Said people in the program really made a point around that time to emphasize that it was the official name of the university.I first remember hearing it during the player intros during Monday Night Football in the early 2000s. Can’t say I’ve ever noticed fans if any other teams using it with a negative connotation, though, at least not until the university tried to trademark “THE” last year. Most Ohio State fans see it as a point of pride, honestly.
Robert Smith is full of it. I saw a reference to it in the late '80s and wondered what the deal was.

I've always loved the Eagles' full-body logos.
But that cap looks badly photoshopped on his head.
Was not photoshopped. It's a Getty image.

A&M's problem on the current uniforms is not the stripes. I love that feature because it's a throwback to the '70s. The beveled fonts on the helmet logo and the jersey wordmark are the issue. The beveled fonts need to go ASAP.

2002 Bengals vs. Texans
Year before the Bengals changed to their current unis.
I was at this game -- sat way in the upper deck in the corner of an end zone. Bengals were winless coming into this game, but they beat the crap out of the Texans.

In the case of the Dolphins, the clamor is for a better uniform.
In the case of the 49ers, this uniform is inferior to the current set, which is a modern version of the uniform set in which they won 4 Super Bowls. They won 1 SB in it, not 4.
