  1. Is there a chance that the Big East tries to poach some MAC schools now? I love the MAC and think it would be a shame if one of the "bigger" conferences tried to nab schools from them.

At this point, if I were the Big East, I would basically try selling the Conference name to the basketball schools that just left and try to negotiate with the ACC to pick up UCONN, Cinci, and South Florida. Hopefully it would somewhat solidify the ACC incase Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Florida State leave. The conference would be decimated if the even just 3 of those schools left, but adding a few more schools may help influence a TV deal and help keep together the ACC.

I'm forced to agree: the BE would be better off booting the football schools and living as a basketball conference...kinda like it used to be.

  2. ESPN reporting that Maryland Board of Regents has unamimously accepted the Big 10 invite. Many thought that Maryland would NOT unanimously accept, but rather have to rule based on the Majority.

ESPN also reports that Rutgers could vote as early as tomorrow (Tuesday, Novemeber 20) to accept the Big 10's invite as well.

I think this almost makes UConn to the ACC a fait accompli. They need someone to replace Maryland, and they'd get NYC penetration as UConn is broadcast on SNY.

This also brings about, sadly (and finally), the death of the Big East.

  3. Looks like Goldwater isn't the only opposition anymore. All 7 city council candidates in the upcoming election are also calling for the city to hold off on approving the final lease (and all 7 of them currently oppose the deal). So if Goldwater holds this up until November or more likely until 2013 since we're passed the November ballot initiative cutoff today, then the new council would may get to vote on it, and they won't be approving the deal.

Which means we get at least one more year of this. Joy.

  4. Yeah, I don't think anyone really wanted anything more than the eight teams that were in the league before (except for maybe the Hamilton Is A World Unto Itself lunatic fringe).

    *AHEM*

For one thing Hamilton used to be in the NHL. Secondly Hamilton can support an NHL better than either Winnipeg or Quebec put together.

So it would be nice if you can put away your anti-Hamilton bigotry for once and all...

    :cursing:

    *AHEM*

Two reasons why Hamilton will NEVER sniff the NHL again:

    1 - The arena sucks

2 - The juggernaut up the QEW known as Maple Leaf Sports and World Domination Entertainment

The first is fixable. The second is not.

  5. I agree Brooklyn is always an option, but only for the short-term. They'd need to have the arena deal in place before moving in to a facility with such a limited capacity, lest they be stuck there.

Tickets for the Islanders-Devils exhibition game went on sale today - here's the seating map on the ticket page:

I still can't believe they built an arena in New York City metro too small to accommodate every type of event that utilizes arenas. I don't just mean hockey either. Now you have fewer seats for concerts, you don't have room for motocross or monster trucks or the circus. Not that monster trucks are a big draw in New York, but why not leave open the possibility? It seems so stupidly shortsighted.

    Three words: Madison. Square. Garden.

Between the Knicks, Rangers, and the other events held at MSG, there would be no open dates for another team to play. Also, I doubt the Isles would want to play on Rangers logo'd ice, and the Rangers certainly wouldn't change it. But it doesn't matter anyway, because of the first thing. Also, would the Islanders crowd (what's left of it) go into Manhattan for games?

    *facepalm*

I was attempting to explain why the Barclays Center was built the way it was, not advocating for the Islanders to move to MSG. I think we all know that would never happen as long as the Dolans still run things over there.

  7. From twitter:

les gens occupant le Colisée auraient eu l'ordre de faire un "ménage" dans leurs locaux.

"The gentlemen occupying the Colisee will have to make order of the mess in their place."

I think Quebec City just evicted the Remparts :/

I think your translation's off. Google Translate says: "People occupying the Colisee would have to order a "household" in their premises". I think what it means is not that the Remparts are out, but that they would have to be a secondary tenant in the case an NHL team moves in (until the new arena is built).
