I know there's a lot wrong with the new jerseys and we're all enjoying the pile on, but is it possible that last names were way too damn big to begin with?

I think the smaller letters are made more noticeable because they also lowered the numbers to accommodate the extremely tight arc radius. So players with shorter names have a vast open space that looks comical. If they had kept the previous arc and number placement, the smaller letters might work.

I know FSU kinda has a thing with the turquoise, but man, I do not want to see these on the field. They had just started to look nice the last year, too. Just stay away from turquoise and the white helmet, and their new set is near perfect.

A hell of a way for 63 to reveal to everyone that he wears a girdle.

Say, when DID the NFL implement the 5-year rule anyway? The Patriots changed jerseys three times in three years from 1993-95, so I'm guessing it was after. I'm sure Goodell and his cronies would LOVE to bring that rate of change that the Patriots used to today's league, however.

In the meantime, I'm still waiting on the Commanders' re-brand...

I'd say probably about the same time Nike took over the contract.

I actually think most of that came when Reebok got the exclusive contract with the NFL? If not then, when they made the “one helmet rule”, so yeah, you might be right.

It was 2002 when the rule was established, the same year Reebok took over.

The important part from the NFL's bylaws:

    Quote

Third, be it Further Resolved, that a Club may not change its regular home and away uniforms more than once every five NFL seasons, and may not change its third uniform design more than once every five NFL seasons, absent specific extenuating circumstances (e.g., Club ownership change or relocation) as determined by the Commissioner.

Notre Dame was doing a uniform tribute to a campus landmark long before it became trendy.

Love the "Ohio, the Heart of it All" nod on the back. Is that still the state motto they put on all of the welcome signs?

They finally brought back the motto last year after dropping it about 20 years ago. The other mottos they used were "So much to discover" and "Find it here." Generic as hell, and total duds.

The nod on the back of the neck is definitely a nice touch. If only the front of the shirt wasn't a nod to America's favorite blockhead.

The Jets at least did have the helmet at midfield during the final years at Shea Stadium and had weird endzone logo placement.

It looks like they took the stencil from the midfield helmet logo, and used it for the endzone logos. Didn't want to splurge on a second, bigger stencil I guess.

What is the purpose of such a rule?

    spacer.png

The team can double-dip. They get sales with all the new stuff with the new updated logo, while still selling throwback merchandise with the old logo. And in a few years, they can add throwback merchandise with the middle logo they just got rid of.

Reported Crew home shirt. The Massive Reddit group posted links to Rally House that have since been killed. Not a bad look, but a surprise to be certain based on previous discussions about what the shirt was supposed to represent, as a "return to home" impression. I think this shirt would look better with black shorts than yellow, but we'll see. I don't like that the yellow is lighter with this shirt, but it's not that big a deal if it helps the design stand out. I can't make out what the wording is on the state silhouette, but based on teasers I believe it's the GPS coordinates for Lower.com Field.

I also like that they have included the Spanish phrase, "Everyone's Invited". There had been issues with the Spanish speaking supporter groups and the front office all the way back to when the Hunt's were running the team.

I'm afraid. Very afraid. But then again, if the focus grouping Uni-Watch posted about a few years ago was presumably getting feedback for potential City Connect jerseys, maybe I shouldn't be.

    https://uni-watch.com/2021/09/22/exclusive-tigers-focus-grouping-new-throwbacks/

    My prediction for the Tigers:

    - Navy blue jersey with "MOTOR CITY" arched across the front in block font, in the style of the 84 road. Gray sleeve numbers and no piping or cuff stripes, in the style of the 68 road.

    - Navy blue pants, no piping.

    - Gray socks

    - Gray hat with navy bill, navy squatchee, and navy Old English D.

    They'll look like mechanic coveralls.

I'll defer to your judgement since I'm basing mine on watching a lot of old NFL Films and reading talking to my friends' families who lived through that era.  But I'm not old enough to have seen any of it first hand.  I still think we'd agree he's not in the same discussion with Mahomes, yeah?

I should probably be suspended for posting a Reddit link, but in here, people saying he was one of the original "gunslinger" types, who happened to be clutch in the post season, but equal parts great and horrible in the regular season when not being carried.

Among the top guys for his era, but not overall in the convo for a top guy overall.  I'd love to know a modern comparison, and I'd love to know if, on another team that wasn't among the greatest dynasties in sports, how would he have done.

Is there a BBTV-era comparison (mid-80s on - basically starting with '85 Bears) you could make to help me visualize?

I'm too young too have seen Bradshaw play either, but from what I have seen and from what people describe, I'd say he's "Matt Stafford, but on a team full of HOFers"

So another year with the off-center wordmarks in the endzone?

    🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

This is one instance where it actually sorta works, since both teams have city monograms in their logos. So they read as "SF 49ers" and "KC Chiefs". Centered wordmarks with conference logos would still look better, but at least there's some sort of visual coherence going on.

My cousin and I working as part of the retail division, my cousin managed the store in FedEx Field before joining the Army, toward the end of my cousin's run Snyder's wife was put in charge of the Retail stores, the team had close to 6 or 7 off site in local malls. Well, she decided it would be a good to change the stores to be merch boutiques and not merch stores because all the stores carried far too much merchandise. Not too long after a year or two, all the mall stores closed and the stadium store is now run by Fanatics.

She was also part of the decision to bring in someone who worked at FYE to run the store after my cousin left and instructed that the stadium store, which had no more than 6 customers on non game days, to dramatically rearrange the whole store on a weekly basis.

Interesting sighting at the East-West Shrine Bowl

    https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/toronto-argonauts-qwan-tez-stiggers-invited-to-participate-in-east-west-shrine-bowl-game-1.2063993

He's NFL draft eligible which is why he earned an invitation to the game:

"Qwan'Tez Stiggers will be playing pro football in 2024. He just doesn't know where yet.

The six-foot, 197-pound cornerback was the CFL's top rookie last season with the Toronto Argonauts and remains under contract with the club. However, Stiggers is also eligible for the '24 NFL draft and certainly has caught the eye of scouts south of the border.

He'll have another chance to impress. On Wednesday, Stiggers was invited to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl on Feb. 1 in Frisco, Texas.

A solid performance there could land Stiggers an invitation to the NFL combine, slated for Indianapolis from Feb. 29 to March 3. The draft goes April 25-27 in Detroit".

I guess nothing in the name says it has to be college athletes playing, so good on them for inviting him. And I hope things turn out well for him because the guy's been through some serious sh!t.

Don’t know if this annoys anyone else but the Chiefs should have red end zones to match the jerseys and 49ers should have gold end zones since they barely have red on the away uniforms and the chiefs are in red already.

The Chiefs have always gone with athletic gold end zones for the Super Bowl, and the 49ers have always gone with red.

The Saints tried a gold end zone in XLIV, and it just looked like dead grass.

I like the idea of all of the jerseys being different and they said there's something for everyone.  Could be a disaster, could be good.

    7 hours ago, CaliforniaGlowin said:

They said there will be one traditional jersey, so it might not be all bad.

It doesn't work. Just look to Washington for proof. Even with one passable jersey, it's still bad because none of it matches. Trying to please everyone leaves nobody happy.

I thought the story was that Belichick wanted to dress like an adult but the league wouldn't let him so he went in the opposite direction and dressed as shabbily as possible to make a point, which then backfired on him by becoming his Personal Brand and making it unimaginable that he'd ever wear nice clothes.

Well Belichick clearly didn't fight as hard as Mike Nolan.

Unfortunately for Nolan, there seemed to be an inverse relationship between how well they dressed and how well they coached.

  17. An article with a little more insight:

    https://apnews.com/article/sports-illustrated-layoffs-fd731d842f378305b4ddbb115538ed58

SI hasn't even been the true SI since Time Inc. got bought out. "Sports Illustrated" is just a brand that's been licensed out since 2019, and the license was revoked from the current publisher (probably because they've done a horrible job with it). So it's possible, if not probable, that Sports Illustrated will continue under a different publisher once the license holder finds someone else.

Washington had every opportunity in the second half. That holding call on the big play was suspect, especially since there was a lot of getting away with things all night long.

    Anyway, whatever. Cheaters always win.

I didn't get to see Washington play much this year, but what was up with Penix's throwing motion? Does it always look like he's chucking free t-shirts into a crowd? He just looked off. So many opportunities he just didn't connect on, and several really terrible decisions.

    Anyway, congrats to Michigan*

I can't even think right now when the last time a national championship was played between two teams who have gone decades since their last win. This isn't 2016 World Series levels of droughts involved for either side, but Washington hasn't claimed a national championship since 1991, Michigan since 1997. (Almost) always nice to see some fresh blood in the championship game.

And both of those were split titles. Washington has never won a solo title, and Michigan hasn't won a solo title since 1948!
