Interesting sighting at the East-West Shrine Bowl

    https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/toronto-argonauts-qwan-tez-stiggers-invited-to-participate-in-east-west-shrine-bowl-game-1.2063993

He's NFL draft eligible which is why he earned an invitation to the game:

"Qwan'Tez Stiggers will be playing pro football in 2024. He just doesn't know where yet.

The six-foot, 197-pound cornerback was the CFL's top rookie last season with the Toronto Argonauts and remains under contract with the club. However, Stiggers is also eligible for the '24 NFL draft and certainly has caught the eye of scouts south of the border.

He'll have another chance to impress. On Wednesday, Stiggers was invited to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl on Feb. 1 in Frisco, Texas.

A solid performance there could land Stiggers an invitation to the NFL combine, slated for Indianapolis from Feb. 29 to March 3. The draft goes April 25-27 in Detroit".

I guess nothing in the name says it has to be college athletes playing, so good on them for inviting him. And I hope things turn out well for him because the guy's been through some serious sh!t.

Don’t know if this annoys anyone else but the Chiefs should have red end zones to match the jerseys and 49ers should have gold end zones since they barely have red on the away uniforms and the chiefs are in red already.

The Chiefs have always gone with athletic gold end zones for the Super Bowl, and the 49ers have always gone with red.

The Saints tried a gold end zone in XLIV, and it just looked like dead grass.

I like the idea of all of the jerseys being different and they said there's something for everyone.  Could be a disaster, could be good.

They said there will be one traditional jersey, so it might not be all bad.

It doesn't work. Just look to Washington for proof. Even with one passable jersey, it's still bad because none of it matches. Trying to please everyone leaves nobody happy.

I thought the story was that Belichick wanted to dress like an adult but the league wouldn't let him so he went in the opposite direction and dressed as shabbily as possible to make a point, which then backfired on him by becoming his Personal Brand and making it unimaginable that he'd ever wear nice clothes.

Well Belichick clearly didn't fight as hard as Mike Nolan.

Unfortunately for Nolan, there seemed to be an inverse relationship between how well they dressed and how well they coached.

  5. An article with a little more insight:

    https://apnews.com/article/sports-illustrated-layoffs-fd731d842f378305b4ddbb115538ed58

SI hasn't even been the true SI since Time Inc. got bought out. "Sports Illustrated" is just a brand that's been licensed out since 2019, and the license was revoked from the current publisher (probably because they've done a horrible job with it). So it's possible, if not probable, that Sports Illustrated will continue under a different publisher once the license holder finds someone else.

Washington had every opportunity in the second half. That holding call on the big play was suspect, especially since there was a lot of getting away with things all night long.

    Anyway, whatever. Cheaters always win.

I didn't get to see Washington play much this year, but what was up with Penix's throwing motion? Does it always look like he's chucking free t-shirts into a crowd? He just looked off. So many opportunities he just didn't connect on, and several really terrible decisions.

    Anyway, congrats to Michigan*

I can't even think right now when the last time a national championship was played between two teams who have gone decades since their last win. This isn't 2016 World Series levels of droughts involved for either side, but Washington hasn't claimed a national championship since 1991, Michigan since 1997. (Almost) always nice to see some fresh blood in the championship game.

And both of those were split titles. Washington has never won a solo title, and Michigan hasn't won a solo title since 1948!

MLB isn't a league name, originally or even today. As much as the two have merged it's two "Major Leagues". And Baseball is what they play. As opposed to Minor League Baseball. Summer League Baseball.  Or College Baseball.

In MLB, where is the League, Association, Alliance, Conference, Group, Organization, etc name. It's just decades of describing the two leagues combined that eventually became its name. But it's not it's league name any more than "College Football" is a 'league name'.  It's just a description of what it is.

If it were Major Baseball League, League of Major Baseball, Baseball Major League, etc...That would be different.

"Major League Baseball" is in fact the name of the league as a whole, and has been for over two decades. The National and American Leagues are effectively conferences now, just keeping their traditional names.

I'm watching it on our local CW station, but it's just the Barstool stream on TV.  I still have to suffer through the announcers and their BS.

    I don't think I've ever heard a commentator call a player a moron before.

  10. Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer the solid light blue field in place of the tricolor. I think it allows the abstracted state shape to stand out better. The tricolor feels like two flags mashed together.

Win decisively.  It should not have been difficult to win decisively against a Florida team that was also on their backup QB.

That very same day, Alabama sure did not win decisively against an Auburn team that had just lost to New Mexico State by 3 touchdowns. They even had their starting QB! Alabama only won because Auburn completely shat the bed in the final minutes. Why does FSU need to win decisively, but Alabama can skate by on dumb luck?

That makes even less sense than what we got. I'll be so glad when we have a proper playoff next year. Arguing about which 2 and 3 loss teams deserve the 12 spot is significantly less integral to the credibility of a championship title.

30 years was a long time ago. Get over it. NFL fans aren't still crying about losses that happened 30 years ago. I can assure you Raiders fans have gotten over the Immaculate reception happening on them. Probably the tuck rule too.

I was being facetious to point out that FSU was once the beneficiary of the same voter bias that has now screwed them over. For all the changes that have been made over the past 30 years, we're still allowing personal opinions to decide a champion rather than the results on the field.

Retribution for losing in a fair contest?

    🥴🥴🥴

College fans and the entire process is insane. I blame Coach Prime for dragging me back to this back-assward, flawed joke of a sport.

Huh? Retribution for FSU winning the National Championship despite having lost head-to-head against an 11-1 Notre Dame, as well as being picked over a then-undefeated West Virginia to play for the title against Nebraska.

  15. Wins and losses have to matter. If all we're doing is deciding who are the "best" teams, and disregarding actual wins and losses, then why even play the playoff games? If all that matters is the voters' opinion of who is better, then we're right back to pre-BCS bullsh!t. If all that matters is who looks best, just choose a champion and be done with it.

It's a failure either way.  Omitting Alabama means leaving out a team that just beat the #1 team in the country and only loss was against the #3 team in the country.  Not to mention they can match FSU's best win and would likely be a heavy favorite if they played FSU next week.  They're effectively being punished for scheduling a playoff team non-conference.

No, they're punished for losing to a non-conference playoff team. While Texas is rewarded for beating a non-conference, one-loss conference champion. The scheduling goes both ways.

I say this as a proud Toledo alum - the Rockets have no business playing in a New Year's Six bowl game.

Having been at the SJSU game, I agree. It's been a fun year, and it's great to see them at 11-1, but they are far from a complete team, and would not fare well against most of the top 20. I'd expect them to end up in something like the Sun Bowl.
