  1. As a professional graphic designer, I think the Twins new M logo is fantastic. I'd maybe lower the star placement slightly, but otherwise it's perfect.

As a Twins fan, I think the Twins new M logo is fantastic. It's nice to have an M road hat back in the mix and I think it's a great addition to the visual identity of the franchise. Especially with the nod (unintentional or otherwise) to the Washington Senators element of the franchise's history.

It seems like most of the hate is from people who hate change, a killer of good design among all fanbases when a new design is introduced. Some amazing new soccer logos have been discarded in short time because loyal fanbases don't want change, regardless of how good the branding update might be. This is one of the major areas of personal frustration in regards to the intersection of sports and design.

After seeing many photos and videos from spring training, I'm not 100% against the smaller NOB font. It works for single layer lettering like the Dodgers, but looks god awful for any lettering with an outline like the Mets. And the Twins custom font with single layer lettering, I seriously can't tell the difference from last year

The Twins and Royals did not alter the size of the NOB this year. A benefit of getting new uniforms within the Nike design window.

How the Royals kept their uniforms from being changed like the rest of MLB

I am so, so tired of gigantic screens bigger than the playing surface. Everyone has tiny screens and then there's also huge screens. It's all too much.

Yep. I've been refraining from commenting on the new stadium renderings because I'm just so damn defeated about the whole thing, but I'm glad to see someone else express the sentiment.

The big screen is just something folks look at occasionally when they look up from their little screens.

The game is taking place in front of us. Do we really need a big screen the size of the entire outfield to watch the game on? Just look in front of you!

I'm also quite certain a good chunk of this screen space will soon enough be used for sports betting graphics. Not just in Vegas, not just in MLB, but in all sports. Live betting at the game.

Anyway, I'm only in my early 30's and feel like an old man yelling at a cloud.

Rockies Officially Remove Black Jersey from Rotation – SportsLogos.Net News

News from main site:  they officially are removing black Rockies top from their rotation even though they haven't worn it in years.  Also I assume the article is wrong and this means they and the Cubs are the only National League teams to not max out 4+1?  Cuz I don't think Yankees or Tigers do either.

    From that article:

“But what of the Yankees! Think of the Tigers!” I hear the commenters tapping away. Both the Yankees and Tigers used their two available uniform slots on a set of home and road Spring Training jerseys, and yes, Spring jerseys count against the four.

Not a huge fan of the navy, but given the nautical theme it makes sense. Kinda wish they’d gotten rid of black altogether (that is the script color on white and red jerseys, right?), and scripts on blue and red jerseys could use white outlines.

    Nope, it's navy.

Yesterday Gary Bettman met with the crew trying to bring an NHL expansion team to Omaha. This included the potential owner, Rod Yates, and the Nebraska governor, among others.

A summary from my friend (with some of my own thoughts mixed in):

They're working on building a 18-19k arena that would serve as the USA Volleyball training headquarters (something that is actually far more likely to happen) and house the NHL team. The problem is that this buffoon is trying to place the team in Gretna, a small city half an hour outside downtown Omaha.

Yates' financial tech company identified 560k people in the Omaha/Lincoln metro areas who have NHL season tickets or have purchased NHL tickets or meet other data points showing they are NHL fans.

Yates pitched the NHL on his company providing data analytic marketing for all NHL franchises, which would be headquartered in Gretna.

Apparently he wants to call the team the Nebraska Knight Owls. The use of the Knights nickname by Omaha hockey teams dates back to 1945, but Vegas has already claimed that moniker. Owls is the mascot of the local soccer team, Union Omaha. The former minor league football team used the name Omaha Nighthawks. And utilizing the Nebraska moniker rather than Omaha will piss off thee Omaha fans while pleasing folks in Gretna, Lincoln, etc.

Yates is neighbors in Park City, Utah, with Ryan Smith, who wants to move the Coyotes to Salt Lake City.

    ***

As much as I'd love to have an NHL team here in Omaha, this whole thing is a joke. This is what happens when delusional wealthy morons have connections.

Adding to this after finding out that the meeting was unannounced. As in, the Omaha crew flew to New York and managed to get a meeting with Bettman without an appointment.

  7. I'm confused. Many teams have taken inspiration from past local professional hockey teams for Winter Classic uniforms. Suddenly we're deciding the Blues aren't allowed? Give me a break.

PS - I realize some folks have concerns about the actual jersey design, which is totally reasonable.

Does Omaha have a pro-ready arena?

    Yes, seats 18,300.

Although I believe they decommissioned the hockey ice setup and maintenance system when the Omaha Mavericks left for their own on-campus arena. But there's been talk of hosting NCAA hockey regionals at the downtown arena, so hosting hockey again is a possibility.

  10. 19 hours ago, Dilbert said:

Bettman mentioned today that the league has talked with groups interested in expansion in Atlanta, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Houston, Omaha, and Cincinnati. The first four are no surprise but Cincinnati shocked me. Cincinnati would need a new arena. There have been talks about a new arena here for at least the last decade. Omaha could possibly work, If Kansas City is a no go, plus Omaha doesnt have a team in the Big Four. I could see them like a hockey version of Oklahoma City with the Thunder. Their only competition for fans is the USHL Lancers in suburban Omaha and Creighton basketball.

The biggest competition in Omaha from a hockey market standpoint is actually Omaha Mavericks college hockey. The Mavericks and Lancers each have their own arenas, while an NHL team would play at the downtown venue. From a scheduling standpoint, Creighton basketball would be the major conflict.

Omaha has a deep hockey history. The 2005-2007 version of the Omaha Knights was the last pro hockey team in town, but they were horribly mismanaged and the Calgary Flames were impatient and quickly moved the franchise elsewhere (and have continued to relocate the franchise every so often, but that's another story). The Mavs play in college hockey's best conference and have a strong fanbase and some consistent national attention. There's absolutely a market here for hockey.

The bigger piece of the puzzle is the support ANY big-5 professional team would get if based in Omaha. People often cite the diehard support of Husker football or any of the other local college teams as a reason a pro team wouldn't work here. As in, people care so much about those teams that there isn't any room left for another franchise. In reality, Omahans have shown time and again that they'll show up for just about any sporting event. And all the pro teams around here get great support (Union Omaha, Omaha Storm Chasers, Omaha Supernovas). Plus an impressive track record hosting the College World Series, US swim trials, and US curling trials, all of which the community have fallen in love with.

I don't think Omaha is an actual market in consideration for any of the big-5 professional leagues, but I do think the NHL would actually be the best option and could work.

The smaller crowned Twins 39thirty BP looks far better than the huge crowned 59fifty.

Perhaps a different version is coming for ST but this is just a miss in my book

This is an odd design choice because the Twins don't even wear pinstripes currently. (Edited to clarify "on their home uniforms.")

At the least the Rockies (who's cap also features pinstripes) actually have pinstriped uniforms.

The only team that gets the pass IMO is Notre Dame. They are the only team that should be wearing chrome in hockey

Not chrome. Metallic. Metallic gold helmets are perfect for Notre Dame.

It seems most folks don't know the difference between chrome and metallic (I don't mean to be condescending) but using the right finish can really make all the difference. I haven't seen a single chrome dome in the NHL that I think works. But Vegas and LA could pull off metallic helmets if the finish was applied properly.

The colors definitely pop, and the handwritten font is an interesting choice. No word on jerseys yet.

To me this is further proof that the Devils should utilize green in their color scheme.

I don’t disagree with that, but I think it’s the biggest issue I have with it. It reminds me too much of what the Astros used to use. Feels very strange for the Rangers, especially considering they use white instead of cream in their set. The rest of the logo, though? Pretty good!

For me it brings us back to the concept that the Rangers, not Astros, should've been the ones to utilize a western-themed color palette and built an identity around that. Seriously, a team named the Texas Rangers uses a boring old blue and red color scheme? This ASG logo really shows how fantastic it could be if they leaned into the western imagery a bit more. I'd love to see the Rangers use that sand color as a road uniform color a la the 2004 San Diego Padres. They should do something interesting with what is currently one of the most boring and forgettable brand identities in baseball.

Agreed - if it was pure Busorama without any of the cartoon junk on top of it, it'd work much better.

Ever since the Big A stopped being the scoreboard, I've largely seen it as irrelevant to the brand. It's as relevant to the brand as the steamboat chimneys at GAPB, IMHO. My favorite cap logo of the Angels basically tells the Big A to piss off:

    2261.png

Had Disney ownership moved the Big A back into the stadium, we'd be singing a different tune with its brand relevance. However, as long as it sits in the parking lot, it's irrelevant.

I'll disagree with the Big A being an irrelevant part of the Angels brand. Just because it isn't build into the actual stadium anymore doesn't mean it's irrelevant. It's a physical representation of the team's logo, which is extremely unique (I'm so glad Minnesota has the Minnie & Paul logo at Target Field, I wish more teams did stuff like this.). There's also the fact that the stadium has long been referred to as "The Big A" and the fact that it's become an iconic landmark in its current position. The visual language established over 50+ years indicates the Angels should stick with a logo resembling the Big A we've come to know. The current A logo is fantastic. Make the halo gold and remove the beveling if you must.

Whether or not Boston can "claim" marathons is kind of beside the point. Sure Boston has the Boston Marathon and it's a big deal.

Doesn't mean the city's baseball team, just as engrained in the identity of the city if not more so, should ditch their traditional colours to homage the marathon.

Exactly. Obviously the marathon is an iconic element of Boston. But it's an odd thing for a Major League Baseball team to base a uniform on.

It seems strange that they're being so vague about this whole thing. They unveil a centennial crest that will I guess be the primary logo for the upcoming season, but make no mention of if there will be new uniforms or if the new crest will even be used on the uniforms. Then they announce the Era Nights with a video that highlights various uniforms from their history, but don't explicitly state whether or not they'll actually wear those uniforms during those games. It's all very confusing.

I believe it's what we in the biz call "a teaser." They'll make an actual announcement and unveil everything, don't worry.
