  1. They're moving to Montreal, but they can't move with that lease right now so they have to float this idea in the interim. Plus, they want to make sure Montreal can get them a new ballpark and this gives MTL time to build it for them, and then they'll be gone for good in 2029 or earlier if they can negotiate out of that iron clad lease they've got down there. St. Pete is hilarious, they're sticking to it really hard without realizing or caring much about the fact that the team will surely be gone by the time that lease ends. Not that I blame them for not budging on building a new ballpark.

And it's relatively close to San Diego, which might be worse than if they moved to St Louis or something. If they move far away the fans can completely sever ties, but now they're in the same geographical region, they'll be on local TV and radio, just taunting their old city.

I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of a Chargers fan. If the Bengals moved to Columbus would I continue to root for and cheer for them? Probably, but it'd be half-hearted and I definitely wouldn't drive 100 minutes north for games. What's just as likely is I would stop watching the NFL altogether.

I feel for Chargers fans and their bad owners and the helplessness therein. I am fully preparing myself for the Bengals to leave town in 10-15 years when Paul Brown Stadium is ~30 years old and they ask the city to build them another stadium and this time people will tell them to kick rocks.

This is me with the Nets. Was never a true fan anyway, but that resurgence they had with Kidd and Co for a few years was fun largely because they repped Jersey. They're of course terrible in Brooklyn, but I lost my interest in them when they went just over the river even though that's where they started and it's not far at all. (Of course, i don't live there anymore...) So I dunno, it's difficult for sure to decide when the move is still in the region.

  3. Regarding Kerry Collins and the Panthers, I forgot they wore blue socks with their silver pants and black jerseys in their first season.

Related: It would've been really weird and would've looked bad on the NFL if the Panthers and Jaguars had played each other in the Super Bowl in their second years.

Was rooting for that outcome. Too bad it didn't happen.

In his last year in the majors (2000) Doc Gooden appeared in one game for the Houston Astros.

    Barry Larkin

To be fair, Barry Larkin isn't PLAYING for the Nats. I mean, hell. Joe Torre as a Yankee in that case? Don Mattingly as a Dodger (which I do think is kind of weird) I mean...it's different, but it's totally different than say, MJ in Wizards gear.

  5. Could go with Seattle Brewers...Starbucks would love it.

Given Bud Selig moved the Pilots to Milwaukee to BECOME the Brewers, this is just tonedeaf.

I'm surprised nobody wants to harken back to those 1919 Seattle Metropolitans...

Most informal votes are Thunderbirds or Metropolitans. I imagine that's the direction they go and in either case, that banner gets raised because a Cup is a Cup.

  6. It is better than bringing back the Metro. Reviving a dead league name is problematic, plus it'd be the same problem if they go out of region again (ECU isn't metro) or whatever. This name gives them the flexibility to do whatever they want and it's a nice trick to force people to start calling them the AAC and to get them confused.

    I like it.

  7. Anyone from the DC area know how credible Kevin Jones is? He seems dead set that GT and UVA will be Big10 bound come Monday.

    https://twitter.com/Mr_KevinJones

The fact the major outlets are ignoring this should tell you everything you need to know. The Notre Dame move, the Rutgers/MD moves all happened fast but under cover of night and not with tweeters just throwing stuff on the wall in the hopes it sticks. But we're seeing lots of it.

  8. Am I alone in thinking it's dumb to celebrate an NL/AL Championship? IMO it would serve as a reminder that the players/team lost in the WS, nit won in the LCS.

Not dumb, but I don't agree. Hell aren't there teams in the past that used to do Division Championship rings?

I'm all for celebrating if you win something.

  9. They'll manage to get that ballclub moved before long. No way those Wall Street dudes who bought the club are going to sit idle. They'll figure something out and they'll find a venue for them in the next 5 years one way or another. No doubt about it. They've made it a profitable club from the doldrums and if the people in that spring training town don't want them, they'll find a city that does. I just hope they do while the club is still good.

  10. Ray Rhodes was coach of the year in 1995 in his first year with the Eagles. He also delivered a pregame speech where he said to envision the opponent breaking into your house, robbing you, then sodomizing your wife and kids (and possibly pets or horses or something). No lie.

He also coached the Packers after that stint with the Eagles.

  11. TCU makes the Big East a 17 team basketball conference. Oh god. So see you later, Depaul?

Did I mention 17 freakin' teams in basketball?

I'm curious about this. How is the Big East Basketball Tourney going to work out, now? Top 3 teams get byes to the semifinals, other 14 teams play 13 round-robin games each to decide the #4 seed in the semis?

Bonus points to anyone who can name all 17 Big East teams. I'm convinced at least 5 of those teams are just in the conference for the sake of having a large conference.

They will add an 18th team by the time this is an issue and there is talk of divisional alignment finally once they do this. It's not that big a deal, pro league handle it fine...the Big East will find a way to make it work as their alignment is really just akin to a pro league setup at this point given the major markets they'll represented in.
