set text.  select and use the object>transform>shear settings (shear angle -30deg, vertical, 90deg angle, check the preview.  may take a few times to get the angle you want.  and it's not a "live effect" so if you're not happy you'll have to go back and redo. play w a few times.  the shear transform will distort the text, but it is editable so you can adjust horizontal scale (100% letter width, expand, or condensed text) and play w spacing til you get it the way you want.  might be easier to set text after playing w settings, then apply the shear settings you like.

nice work on the dribble page!

Thanks! I'll give it a shot

  2. Hey guys, quick question. I have Google searched this to no end without any luck. Is there a way to make your own cheetah print in Illustrator or do you have to just find a brush and download it? I need the print for a logo I am going to start working on in the next few weeks and I'm pulling together all my reference pics and doing some sketches but I know doing every individual spot by hand (especially If I have to trace an entire pattern versus drawing three or four spots and making my own scatter brush) its going to be a huge pain in the ass. I know when I did the identity package for IceCap's Calgary Tigers fantasy hockey team, I had to break down and just hand draw all the tiger stripes because I'm not familiar with finding and downloading brushes into Illustrator. I can't be the only person that has ever had an issue like this with animal print. Thanks in advance!

Nevermind, answered my own question. I didn't know there was a cheetah print in the swatches library.

  4. It might be that you both have it open at the same time - I've had that issue working in an office environment. That was there way of combatting piracy for some time, it might still be.

It could be, I don't know, and if so there is no real way to prevent it, I really don't think we are going to start coordinating our Illustrator time, lol. I have since just went back to CS2. Thank you for the help.

  5. Hola, gentlemen. I upgraded to CS5 last week and after years of using CS3 I know it will take some time to adjust. However, each time I close the program I lose all tools (ie: layers, color, stroke, pathfinder, etc.), I prefer these items to be out and accessible while i work instead of being along the sides of the window in an icon tray. I also like my work in RGB preview and it constantly switches back to CMYK, and I have fixed all these in the Preferences menu. Am I doing something wrong or do I just have to reside in the fact that I will have to reopen and organize everything each time I close and open the program?

Thanks for any and all help.

CS5 is now opening and instantly closing again. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled. Reset the computer about a jillion times. Cleaned out the registry and reinstalled. Nothing works. Now I did get CS5 from a designer friend of mine and used his serial, all that, because he told me it should work. Would that be it, like does Adobe track who is using what serial number where or have IP addresses stored in a system and if its used in an "unauthorized" location it will shut down the "strange" one? I am just confused. I even reset my whole computer to factory settings (which I was going to do anyway, cuz it was just running slow as crap) and that didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

  7. As far as Ichiro's trade, I think it's odd that Seattle would trade him to the team they are PLAYING at the time of the trade. So he just packs his stuff and walks over to the other clubhouse. That has to be odd for everyone involved. I still remember when the Pirates traded Denny Neagle to the Braves mid-series, though I am not positive if he pitched against the Bucs (but I think he did actually pitch against them the very next day after the trade), it was rumored (by Neagle himself, I think) that they traded him to the Braves during a series with the Braves in order to save travel costs. The Pirates did get Jason Schmidt out of it, though, FWIW.

  8. Out of the blue last night any image I copied and tried to paste into Illustrator (I use CS3) shows the code or web address of the copied image instead of the image itself, when pasted and I can't figure out why it started doing this or how I fix it. Did I accidentally use a keyboard shortcut to start doing this? How do I return it to the point where I can see the image I copied instead of words and symbols? I need to paste in some reference shots for a template I am working on. Any help is appreciated.

Try dragging the image from your web browser into Illustrator or saving it to your local drive. That happens to me on rare occasions.

Just for reference, I tried to copy this image Shoe.jpg into my artwork and this shoe2.jpg is how it came up, words no picture. I did try to drag it as you suggested, but it didn't work and I really dont want to save every single item I want to use as a reference picture or whatever, down the road, I want to fix whatever I did. I HAD to have accidentally hit some sort of wrong combo on my keyboard thinking I was doing another function with the shortcuts and triggered this to happen, but I went through every pull down menu and can't see anything that would strike me as "oh yeah, thats probably it". Thanks anyway.

Problem fixed. It is a bug in Firefox 12. Supposed to be corrected when Firefox 13 comes out in June.

  11. Okay, my question may come off weird so I will word it the best I can. I may even be able to supply screenshots if that would help. Here's my issue: Whenever I open a few layers I want horizontally centered (I use the pathfinder align), the whole selected group of layers jumps to the left about 1.5x the width of the selected group. Now I did search and clean up stray points in case that was the issue, yet it is continuing to do it. I'm just working with an illustration where all the layers flow in a uniform fashion so I dont want to try to realign the "skipping" layers to the ones that are in their set places. Any help?

Screen shots will help. Are you hitting align left or align center? Also which version of Illustrator do you have? I have noticed that if you have objects near the edge of an art board, it sometimes acts funny.

ugh, nevermind. As I was getting the screenshots, it stopped doing it (wtf)? But this has happened on me before, though, but this project is super involved and important and I don't want to have to add any more extra steps than I am already facing. I definitely know I'm not hitting the left align and the items DO center horizontally, they just jumped off the screen in the process. As far as the version of Illy I am using, if memory serves it is CS3

  13. Okay, odd problem. Yesterday my Illustrator worked perfectly fine. Today, after work, I hoped on Illy and my shape tool has gone rogue. It wont let me drag a shape at all. The instant I click the mouse to start my shape, the box to put in preset sizes for the object pops up. I cannot find a way to turn it off and I am not familiar enough to just guess what it could be and i dont want to risk jacking up something else trying to find out whats wrong with the Shape tool. I am sure it is an incredibly easy fix, but I am just not literate enough with the menus to fix it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  14. @ UniJ: Best way to create a "frosted" look in Illy is to use a combination of gradient fills and transparency blends and a lot of time and custom-done effort. You're not really going to find a fill pattern that looks convincing. Another option would be to find a picture of ice, increase the brightness/contrast in photoshop, livetrace it, then apply it as a texture overlay.

Thanks! I'll give it a try.

  15. Ok, I did a Google search to no avail, so, that being said, is there any way to make a "frosted" look in Illustrator? By frosted I mean like the surface of your care after a cold night has that cross-hatched ice look to it. Or even another really good ice texture would work. Thanks in advance, guys.

  16. Anybody know what the kgb font is?

    www.kgb.com

And yes, if it's a pay font I intend to do so. Thanks!

if you ask them directly in their search feature, they should text you the answer. post up if they know it themselves. (that could be funny if they don't)

I actually did this back around 4th of July, the reply I got was "Fonts for Advertising". Pretty much a go **** yourself, I think. But if anyone else tries and gets something else....

  17. untitled.jpg

I think I've seen it before, but I'm thinking it's a condensed version.

Shadows of Xizor....if it's not that, it's Demonized...but I am almost positive it is Shadows of Xizor. In any case they are both free.

  18. Is there a way to determine the degree of a curve in an object? On the same note, is it possible to make a line (preferably with the pen tool) with a specific curve degree? If not, it's cool, but it would work wonders for a project I am working on if I can preset all the curves.

    Thanks, guys, as usual.
