Not even just that, I think the Dolphins are just going to wear all white socks and do a Color Rush. In Madden 20 it lists the throwback but white socks and cleats as the 2019 Color Rush uniform. I'm pretty sure this is how they got away with two throwback uniforms, the white technically being Color Rush but they swap in striped socks instead sometimes.

There's no "getting away" with anything. First of all, there is no more mandatory Color Rush, and a team can have two alternate uniforms, as long as one is designated as a throwback. Note how last year the Bears wore throwback "Monster of the Midway" unis and an alternate orange jersey....neither were considered Color Rush.

Actually, Miami isn't doing that either.

I don't mean to be pedantic, but . . The Dolphins throwback facemask is gray, not aqua.

Also the pants belt I think is white, not aqua.

I don't think they had a colored facemask until the 80s, and a colored belt until the 70s.

and yes, that's what the Steelers are planning to wear, their mono-black color-rush uni's.

Also the pant striping of (both) their throwbacks is aqua-orange-aqua, which was only worn with this uniform in their expansion year of 1966...

from 1967 to 1985 the striping was orange-aqua-orange....

It’s definitely not an upgrade and it’s definitely not their throwbacks or anywhere reminiscent of such, but it fits in with the current era of uniform design. Most people’s beef about the Dolphins is the logo and it seems like because of that, they’re trying to find other things wrong with the uniform design to justify their hatred for the logo.

Yes, because other than the logo, this set is very similar to their wonderful 1970-71 stripeless set...

Preliminary reports are they’re keeping it.  The aqua is their official alternate, with the white being their Color Rush.

There is no requirement to have a Color Rush...teams are allowed to have two alternates, as long as one of them is an official throwback.

The Dolphins are going Full Brewers now. I'm going to enjoy what I see and hate it at the same time. They need to just pick a look already.

They don't and they wont. Why have only one identity to market when you can have two? Classic gear for us old farts, and the modern look for those too young to know who Don Shula even is....

Its true that some numbers filled negative space that way in certain seasons

however the dolphins uniform in the 70s experienced many nuanced changes.  There was a discussion on some thread here a while back on it.  A lot of those changes focused on pant stripes, socks, and the dolphins head position.   But the negative space on the numbers was another element that changed.  The photo above was from 1972.  Here’s s another year.  Not certain which one but it was post 72 pre 80

Believe it or not, these are both from the 1972 season...the top being from Super Bowl VII. In 1970 and '71 the Dolphins wore stripeless jerseys, in 1972 they introduced those shown in the bottom photo, with striping and a thin number font. However, many players didn't like the fit and went back the the older jerseys, causing both styles to be on the field at the same time...which is what you see in the top photo.

In 1973 new jerseys were again introduced with striping and thicker numbers, which became the standard jersey thru 1986...

Dolphins will have a white 1966 "color rush" throwback next year.

Should be able to retain the regular throwbacks as well

Hoping they wear the championship era orange-aqua-orange pant stripes with it, as opposed to the 1966-only aqua-orange-aqua stripes they have been wearing with their throwbacks...

I just don’t get why they can’t scrap their current identity and just commit full time to these. As a lifelong Dolphins fan I have barely followed them since the rebrand. I just can’t get into them in this set.

I think (at least some in) the Dolphins organization likes to double-dip the way it is now...throwbacks for fans who prefer those, and a modern uniform for the rest. Maximizes their marketability.

Given what I've seen so far, and based on fields in the past weeks, this is what I'm guessing the field will look like. May not have the paint around the numbers, but they did a couple weeks back against the Patriots.

Hopefully the attention to retro style fields will carry over to Super Bowl LIV in Miami.

That would be the league's call, not the Dolphins, so no way....
