Because that always works! (Juwan Howard, Patrick Ewing)

Except neither of them had any collegiate (or anywhere?) head coaching experience prior to being hired. Pope has been a head coach for 10 years. Not saying he'll be successful, but it's not really comparable to Howard/Ewing (Or Mullin or Mike Woodson or Penny Hardaway or....). He'd be more comparable to Matt Painter. Anthony Grant, Hubert Davis, and Jon Scheyer are examples of this working but unlike Ewing/Howard they had collegiate coaching experience before landing their current roles, though Scheyer/Davis were only assistants.

It also doesn't help that it was on TBS. Why are championships relegated to cable, late on a Monday night? Who the hell asked for that? The Women's championship game was on broadcast TV, at 3pm on a Sunday. That makes so much more sense, and people actually tuned in to watch the whole game. They should either put both games on Sunday, or shift them each back a day, having Women's on Saturday, and Men's on Sunday. And drop the TBS championship nonsense. But that would be too convenient, so of course they won't do that.

The TBS thing was part of the deal when Turner got involved to make sure every game was shown. It rotates every year now I believe. It was on there in 2022 as well, and was supposed to be in 2020.

The timing is egregious. I get that it was in a more western time zone than usual, but sporting events are getting increasingly later and later. I'm still going to stay and up and watch the whole thing because to me it's the best sporting event by a wide margin, but I'll still be adjusting my sleep schedule for the next week or two.

Even though I watch less and less football each year, I enjoy that the Super Bowl is consistently an early evening start each year.

There's nothing to 'enjoy' other than just counting down the days until UConn gets their comeuppance and Hurley gets what's coming to him

He's basically a cross between Coach K and Kim Mulkey

    Cool.

  4. In all fairness, most fans of any team are insufferable

I hate that "what they'll do in the NBA" is ever part of the discussion when discussing the legacy/ability of college basketball players. I know the next logical step, but we're allowed to just enjoy things for what they are.

The way they completely neutered Purdue’s offense and abused Edey on the other end was a coaching masterclass. Edey got off to a great start but from about 6 minutes left in the first until Clingan up his 4th foul and Johnson fouled out, he was pretty ineffective and frustrated.  And by that point the game was well out of reach and UConn only cared about preventing threes.

Also, the premise of your post is dumb. Seems to me it would be better never having to play from behind. There’s more to coaching than rah rah halftime speeches and even then, the number of times UConn would go into the half in a close-ish game and then put on the afterburners was impressive all the same.

And the adversity was losing the best three players off of their dominant championship team and proceeding to turn the backups into an even more dominant team.

But I thought coaching was just....halftime adjustments? (or other trite phrases I can yell at the TV to let everyone know I know sports)

It's a odd question, because most teams' road uniforms are just a gray version of their home set, usually with a different wordmark, so it really comes down to whether you find a white or gray uniform more appealing.

I guess I was only thinking about teams where this isn't true (after a lot of good road jerseys were posted). The Reds, Giants, Cubs, Yankees all have great home whites, but the roads grays are so boring. Maybe it's the switch from a logo on the upper left to a wordmark. Even the Reds script Red uniforms are worse than the ones they replaced.

  7. I'm not sure what I think of the New Yankees gray uniforms. As someone who values parallel looks between homes and roads when possible I guess it's good that both and home and away uniforms have no cuff stirpes.

More of an overall question: not considering the new template, are there any teams whose road grays are better, or at least on par with the home whites? I can't think of a single team where the road gray isn't just a worse uniform design than the home uniform

They aren’t throwback uniforms, they are faux-backs at most. They took traditional designs for the schools and updated them with current word marks and number fonts.

None of the of three teams are using the current wordmarks on those jerseys, but they all do also other home uniforms that they don't seem to wear as often

  9. Kinda glad Illinois didn't make the Final Four given the Terrence Shannon situation. I have no idea the real story, but until it gets resolved it would just feel weird to me.

Also does anyone else find it weird that 3 of the top seeds (Arizona, Purdue, UConn) have been wearing predominantly throwback home uniforms this year? It'll be weird to look back on footage of this tournament and see those teams wearing uniforms from 20+ years ago (way more in Purdue's but I don't know when those are from)

There is talk around Calipari, but what about Izzo? What has Michigan State done in the past several years? They haven't been an elite program for quite a while and just seem to be an easy chalk for early-to-mid tournament exits. Their last title was 2000.

They went to the Sweet 16 last year and the Final Four in both 2019 and 2015. They were also a top ten team in 2020 when the tournament was cancelled.

    Something separate:

I hate when people use the tournament to gauge how good conferences are as whole. The SEC is not a weaker conference than the ACC because of how tournament results play out. Literally anything can happen in the tournament. Dan Hurley saying the Big East deserved more teams because the Big East is 6-0 is so dumb. They'd have a worse record if they let the worse teams in.

It's a dumb as using the bowl season to say whatever conference is better than the rest.

Was anyone complaining that they were too big before? I certainly don't remember it.

The smaller names make the uniforms look like how they'd be rendered in an old video game.

People weren't complaining about because it wasn't part of a larger problem and there wasn't momentum in people having to say something about to keep up. I'm not sure I really noticed it either until now. Given the choice between these and last year's, I'd 100% choose last year's name size. But it made me realize that those weren't all that great either. I don't need to see the leftfielder's name from an airplane. I know we've been shown these two options, and this is likely the only two we have, but sometimes a third option of something in-between is best (I promise this is not a metaphor for anything else). If we had something smaller for our entire lives then they switched to the large names, we'd be losing our damn minds, too. We like it because it's what we're used to and there's no fault in that.

I think the smaller letters are made more noticeable because they also lowered the numbers to accommodate the extremely tight arc radius. So players with shorter names have a vast open space that looks comical. If they had kept the previous arc and number placement, the smaller letters might work.

Oh the new letters are definitely look worse (still can't wrap my head around why the Verlander letters look so big still).

But I don't think they need to be as big as they used to be. I know we all fear change but holy :censored: they looked awful last year too.

As predicted, but now credible reports (i.e. not Josina Anderson) saying that Howie/Lurie told Sirianni that he could keep his job, only if he fires both coordinators and other coaches and either goes with their list.  Supposedly, the DC hire (Desai) was his choice as a sort of flex, and he sold them on it, even though they recommended promoting the DB coach, who was promptly fired (and is now in line to be Baltimore's next DC, go figure)

The funny thing is that they haven't fired any coaches yet, but Howie has already made calls to agent of the guys on his list to set up interviews when it's time.

Sirianni is mulling it over, but there's no way he doesn't do whatever they tell him to do, even if it means Howie sleeping with his wife.  Fortunately for him, Hurts' professional relationship with his homeboy OC seems to have deteriorated over the year, so maybe firing him won't cause as much of a riff as previously thought.

    TL;DR

Eagles are a complete dumpster fire and it's not going to get any better.  There's no way they finish higher than 3rd in the division next year.

They went from winning 30 of last 35 regular-season games (30 of 33 if we only count Hurts' starts) and two playoff games over the past three seasons, to a complete disaster over the course of two months.  Give me another example of a turn like this - you can't.

I'd be willing to bet a hundred dollars they finish at least 2nd. They literally just finished 11-6. it's not like they went 2-15.

Expect more excited Romo if the Bills win today, he seems to do it all the time with the Bills lol

This is what every fan says about an announcer when the opponent has good players.

Guarantee Bills fans will say Romo's too excited about Patrick Mahomes because football fans are too soft to hear positive things about a player wearing a different shirt.

Jason Benetti goes from White Sox PXP man to Tigers PXP man

As someone who can only listen to their team on the radio, I also found myself listening to Benetti and Steve Stone because they were a great pair and fun to listen to. I'd say Benetti might be my favorite broadcaster across any sport (along with Kevin Brown and Adam Amin). I feel like Detroit needs a whole new both based on reviews from last season so we'll see who he's paired up with.
