  1. I love the delaying of the inevitable. I also want to see the death of Phoenix hockey. It is so irritating to see all the lucky breaks this franchise gets, in a city no one cares of, or even fundamentally understands of, hockey. It is so frustrating to see fans of deserving cities like Quebec (and for a while Winnipeg) suffer in misery because of the incompetent decisions made to keep Phoenix as a market. It's like the NHL is a well groomed person who has that huge ugly-looking back zit (Coyotes), and refuses to pop it open, deciding to live with it despite the painful results. I think the day the Coyotes do indeed definitely leave, everyone on the CCSLC should have a ticker-tape parade and celebrate like people did on V.E. Day. But we'll be losing quite possibly the longest running series of a mind-boggling thread (in this and all its previous iterations). You'll have to pour one out instead and pay a last respect if anything... Even if the Panthers are on deck, it can't possibly ever be the same. Glendale Tomfoolery > Anything Else.
  2. So let's have everyone on the planet have the same time of day no matter how bright it is outside or how dark it is. Noon is noon, whether it's pitch black or the sun is blinding you.
  3. I'm REALLY going to miss this thread whenever something actually does come to a head one way or the other. I know there'll be another team on deck, but it just won't be the same. You can't replicate Glendale. That's the zenith.
  4. You must've not seen the PSU/Iowa game when I was a freshman at Penn State in 2004.Iowa 6, Penn State 4. No joke. You were at that game?! *salutes* It was miserable. And this is coming from someone who's had Jets season tix his entire life and can remember seeing the Rich Kotite teams of the mid-90's. And for the record, once I graduated I haven't watched or been to a PSU (or any college game) except for the 2009 Rose Bowl which I went to because hey, why not? Not a college football guy.

  6. "Hey, kids it's me! I bet you thought that I was dead... But when Bettman blocked me we were 10 posts in and now we're already on the fourth thread!" "Look, guys, I refuse to sing. And I still don't want this team. Buying the Coyotes would be a nice fling, but turning profit would be a pipe dream." I'd nominate this for POTD if RIM (now BBRY) hadn't lost virtually all of its value since this began... Regardless, now I have Billy Madison in my head.
  7. Two. Another team in Ontario could (Markham or Hamilton take your pick) do the same. Now actually getting that team in place with all the Maple Leaf issues is another thing. If it happens though that would also be a guaranteed windfall.
  8. True but the Suns don't own the arena, the city does. And I highly doubt the city couldn't use another 40 or so dates filled up with events bringing in revenue to both them directly at the arena and via increased tax revenue at establishments around the arena. I mean hell just looking at February, they only have events filling 9 days out of 28 this month. Sure seems like a few hockey games thrown in their wouldn't hurt their bottom line. And as for Ice Caps' comments regarding competing against the Suns for advertising money and ticket sales. With ad sales aren't they already competing with each other since they share the market? 18 miles isn't going to change that dynamic. As for ticket sales, I think you're making a false assumption that buyers of basketball tickets and hockey tickets have a large overlap. They didn't seem to negatively impact each other last time they shared what was then America West Arena. In these cities with a team in all of the four major sports, it seems that people who are really into sports are into just three: MLB, the NFL, and one of the NBA/NHL--not both. Not that there aren't people who love all four or don't care for baseball or whatever. Just saying that IN GENERAL you don't see a lot of people who are big fans of both hockey AND basketball.
  9. http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/8900519/nfl-us-government-score-record-bust-fake-jerseys The NFL, in cooperation with government authorities, announced on Thursday that it had seized a record $13.6 million worth of counterfeit NFL merchandise this season in a nationwide enforcement effort called "Operation Red Zone."
  10. The Rangers have already hung an 11-12 Atlantic Division banner at MSG (it's been there since the summer apparently). They have a very random banner selection. Since there aren't real "rafters" at MSG their space is limited they don't have everything up. Why they pick and choose (i.e. why a "Patrick Divison Champs" banner but not some other random one) the ones they do is beyond me.
  11. Are they moving away from the "banner wall" atop that one end of the arena for all the tenants?
  12. Actually, the plan is for Torres to teach sixth grade science as well as routinely get suspended by the NHL...
  13. http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2012/10/16/3511126/nhl-expansion-toronto-quebec-lockout-2012 It's probably not true, but the mere fact that I'm not totally just dismissing it as total BS off the bat says something about the NHL, doesn't it?
  14. Lefty is a Righty?!? As a matter of fact, yes. He's a righty whom golfs left.
  15. FWIW the Avalanche will host the Rangers in Kansas City on October 6th in the "we're going to gauge interest on a team here but it really means nothing and nothing will come of it" annual pre-season game there.
  16. Yeah, I was thrown off by the change...for the 27th time...
  17. I suppose folding the Coyotes would be the most logical thing to do. After all you'd want the "new" Nordiques to start fresh rather than tie them into the history of their long-time WHA rival. No, it's the NHL, and nothing is logical, so the current WPG/PHX franchise history would have to go back to the Jets and then trade the Thrasher version of that history to Quebec for a future first round draft pick.
  18. Does it really make the league more money? On the one hand, we have a $200M expansion fee. On the other, a $60M relocation fee. But in this case, the NHL also pockets the purchase price of the team, which adds another $170M to the party. So they could let les Quebequois buy the Coyotes (and move 'em) for somewhere around $230M, or they could go through all the trouble of folding the team, dispersing the players, re-working the schedule for an odd number of clubs, holding an expansion draft in two years, and after all that only collect $200M for a new franchise. It says they'll try to collect the $200M from both Quebec City and Seattle, but that doesn't seem to work, either. Setting aside that such a plan still leaves the league with an odd number of teams, adding two new franchises doesn't do anything about leaving $30M on the table from the Coyotes; they could move that team to QC and expand to Seattle and maximize their revenues. What am I missing? Or is this just another OITGDNHL moment? I think the "and" was to mean that QC and Seattle would be options, not that they'd collect $200M from EACH. It's one or the other, there won't be 31 teams.
  19. It would have been potentially bad, but he would have funded his purchase of the Coyotes by selling RIM stock, right? So he would have run out of excess money, but as long as the Coyotes themselves turned a profit, I don't think he'd have gone broke. He would have just become the CEO of the Hamilton Coyotes instead of wearing two hats and being an actual businessman as well. And the Leafs sell out all their games even when they suck... unless they can pack in 20,000 more fans into the ACC with standing-room-only tickets, the Hamilton team would be fine. Toronto would always be by far the more popular team, but Southern Ontario already supports two NHL teams, and one isn't even in our country. And most of us hate them. Even playing in Copps, I would be shocked if a Hamilton NHL team didn't sell out every single home game. Yes he would've...but now that the rest of it is (virtually) worthless (or at least soon will be) he'd have this 200 (?)ish million dollar asset that I'm sure he'd be looking to dump. I mean, he has enough of the stock and enough money that he's not exactly ever going to worry about where his next meal is coming from, but that's a mighty big asset to carry when everything is collapsing around you.
  20. Not really related but imagine if Jim Balsille was successful? So you'd have a team in Hamilton now that he'd have to sell because RIM is probably now going to be gone soon after today's latest bad news...their stock is down to $7.60 now...yeesh.
  21. The Devils aren't going anywhere, so can we just kill all the discussion now please?
  22. So every plane that flies to QC now has something to do with a return of the Nordiques?
