  1. Does it really make the league more money? On the one hand, we have a $200M expansion fee. On the other, a $60M relocation fee. But in this case, the NHL also pockets the purchase price of the team, which adds another $170M to the party. So they could let les Quebequois buy the Coyotes (and move 'em) for somewhere around $230M, or they could go through all the trouble of folding the team, dispersing the players, re-working the schedule for an odd number of clubs, holding an expansion draft in two years, and after all that only collect $200M for a new franchise. It says they'll try to collect the $200M from both Quebec City and Seattle, but that doesn't seem to work, either. Setting aside that such a plan still leaves the league with an odd number of teams, adding two new franchises doesn't do anything about leaving $30M on the table from the Coyotes; they could move that team to QC and expand to Seattle and maximize their revenues. What am I missing? Or is this just another OITGDNHL moment? I think the "and" was to mean that QC and Seattle would be options, not that they'd collect $200M from EACH. It's one or the other, there won't be 31 teams.
  2. Well that's the thing. If they're not going to build across the street from PETCO downtown, there's not many other options in San Diego. Any land that isn't developed is only undeveloped because the terrain makes it prohibitive. They'd have to buy something to demolish and build on that land. They're not going to North County, they're not going to build anything in say, Santee or El Cajon, so if not Chula Vista there really is slim pickins'. The downtown & Qualcomm sites do have Trolley access though which is a plus.
  3. They reiterated that to the local paper as well. But the memo also has started having the effect the NFL likely wanted. The local paper has resumed the call for a San Diego stadium push since as the paper puts it the Charger are the most move ready based on the memo's requirements. Though it also points out the Raiders have the easiest exit from their stadium since the Coliseum lease ends after this season in Oakland. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jul/02/chargers-future-san-diego-depends-more-what-happen/ So based on that article it seems like it's "Gaslamp or bust" if they're gung-ho on the convention center/MTS site? Are they not looking anywhere else at all? Would there be any chance of a Meadowlands situation where they build in the Qualcomm parking lot and then knock down the existing structure when the new one is complete, or would they prefer yet ANOTHER shopping center in Mission Valley on that site since they only have approximately 22,000 Targets and Ikea's in the immediate area between Friars Rd. and the 8?
  4. It would have been potentially bad, but he would have funded his purchase of the Coyotes by selling RIM stock, right? So he would have run out of excess money, but as long as the Coyotes themselves turned a profit, I don't think he'd have gone broke. He would have just become the CEO of the Hamilton Coyotes instead of wearing two hats and being an actual businessman as well. And the Leafs sell out all their games even when they suck... unless they can pack in 20,000 more fans into the ACC with standing-room-only tickets, the Hamilton team would be fine. Toronto would always be by far the more popular team, but Southern Ontario already supports two NHL teams, and one isn't even in our country. And most of us hate them. Even playing in Copps, I would be shocked if a Hamilton NHL team didn't sell out every single home game. Yes he would've...but now that the rest of it is (virtually) worthless (or at least soon will be) he'd have this 200 (?)ish million dollar asset that I'm sure he'd be looking to dump. I mean, he has enough of the stock and enough money that he's not exactly ever going to worry about where his next meal is coming from, but that's a mighty big asset to carry when everything is collapsing around you.
  5. Not really related but imagine if Jim Balsille was successful? So you'd have a team in Hamilton now that he'd have to sell because RIM is probably now going to be gone soon after today's latest bad news...their stock is down to $7.60 now...yeesh.
  6. I was in south Florida in January of 2001 when the East Champion Dolphins hosted Indy in a wild card game. The problem was, you couldn't watch it there, because they didn't sell out a freaking playoff game. It's not just a string of losing seasons, it's that they just don't have people flocking to come see them--not now, and not then either.
  7. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/10-brands-that-will-disappear-in-2013.html?page=2 Pardon me if this is old, I'm not going back through the thread. I came across this just now:
  8. The Devils aren't going anywhere, so can we just kill all the discussion now please?
  9. So every plane that flies to QC now has something to do with a return of the Nordiques?
  10. Well they could trade QUE & WPG... And GWI should 100% definitely be all over this. This whole thing is just sad at this point.
  11. Bettman before Game 1 at Prudential Center: (Per TSN): Greg Jamieson continues his efforts to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes, both on putting his equity package together and working with the city of Glendale on a building management deal. A city vote next week on the management agreement may pave the way for the equity side of the equation, Bettman said. Asked if the Coyotes would definitely be in Phoenix next season, the commissioner said: "I can't say anything with 100 per cent certainty. So I think that the likelihood is, based on everything we know today, that the process should conclude successfully but it's not something that I'm in a position to guarantee." He did acknowledge there is no Plan B, however, saying the hope was that the Jamieson takeover would work.
  12. That was literally 2 hours of talk radio the morning the NY Jets were to introduce Tebow, only instead of Quebec City to Bergen County (Teterboro NJ) it was Fort Lauderdale to Teterboro. (Which also made no sense since the Jets train in Florham Park which is 5 minutes from Morristown Airport in Morris County, but I digress.) Creepy really. And of course it turned out to be absolutely nothing, which that is.
  13. I was with a girl who had been black maled before. God was she disappointed when she saw what I was working with.
  14. I haven't been following this too closely, but the lease requires the Rams facility in St. Louis to be in "the top eight of 31 NFL stadiums" by 2015. What does that even mean? How can you possibly rank the 31 facilities objectively? Who's to say one is or is not better than another? One person could rank it 14th, one 23rd, one 7th, who knows? Also, if the Rams had to close the dome for 3 years to do this, I couldn't imagine they play at new Busch, so would it be Mizzou which is 2 hours away? The Bears did that w/ Champaign.
  15. Flags in a stadium that will be domed 90% of the time? What a great concept. And it must be weird for the Lakers to play in an arena with Clipp--er, nevermind... (Yes, pun intended).
  16. Uh oh, looks like I'm going to need to be on the next season of Hoarders.
  17. Yeah but it gets a few extra patrons to the Applebee's across the street before the games.

  19. To wonder why I'm moving to Tempe this year, Glendale has been my home for the last 25 or so years, but this Klown Kouncil is ruining the city. No Libraries, schools are being cut of their funds and Police officers are being laid off or have to transfer to other cities. Really sad day how a team can both morally and fically ruin what used to be a great city. I'd do the same.

  21. Well, that's it. Time to load up the moving trucks...
  22. With their newest uniform update, did the Mets remove the drop shawdow from the retired numbers on the wall? looks like the shadow is still there for some reason This photo is also from one of the first 3 years at Citi and not 2012, so this would've been before they dropped the black dropshadow.
  23. I believe the Penguins attempted something like that at Consol (not sure though). The Devils have it that way in their arena on the ends of the lower concourse and one end of the upper concourse. Edit: I was beat to the punch it seems.
