  1. Where's the fun in that? What're we going to talk about next year? Actual hockey? Come on.
  2. Yeah but even then it'll take longer for them to reap the benefits of their late fees...
  3. Tickets for the Islanders-Devils exhibition game went on sale today - here's the seating map on the ticket page: Oh Jesus H. That's not a long-term solution for the Islanders, that's KeyArena lite. Who builds a basketball arena in 2012? Um, someone who has a basketball team? Why would you build an arena that can host ice events if you don't plan to host any and are trying to optimize the venue to your sport? It's like asking why would a team build a baseball park that ONLY can host baseball and not football? Because you saw what happened in the 60's and 70's with those types of stadiums, how they're antiquated models and don't work in the modern sports world. Hockey and basketball are different in that you can definitely still build an indoor arena with great sight lines for both simultaneously if you plan for that from the get-go. It seems like by building basketball-specific you're just hampering yourself down the line. Just because you don't really need the hockey today doesn't mean you may not want it in 5 or 10 years. It's shortsighted is all.
  4. For me, the degree of difficulty getting to MSG is about the same as getting to the new place in Brooklyn. I'd take the LIRR to both since there won't be much parking at either place. MSG might even be easier since I wouldn't have to change trains at Jamaica. But that really doesn't matter because of the date issue that you mentioned. And the ice would be that much more awful with the Islanders in the building. It's among the worst (if not the worst) as it is because of all the events besides hockey at MSG. Now add another team and pulling up/laying down floors that much more often and it becomes even worse. Never in a million years would that happen.
  5. Hadn't thought of that. For one thing, it wouldn't need re-zoning approvals or anything like that (so I'd think) but is that the location they really want?
  6. Goodnight Coyotes... At least they have the economic impact of an upcoming Super Bowl on the horizon...
  7. If this were to happen it absolutely cannot be built between the outfield and the rest of Chavez Ravine. They may as well just blow up Dodger Stadium if they were to do that. It must be out of sight from the seats of the ballpark.
  8. Ah! That's strange to see, especially when the old ones were up when I saw the Black Keys concert just a few weeks ago. The old ones were much nicer. The pictures of the players aren't consistent. Patrick Division Champion Banners FTW
  9. AMEN to that It was bad enough that the Coyotes didn't leave after last year. Well I don't think that many people would care if it were Florida, Columbus, etc. They're NOT moving, but nobody would miss them either save for a few people in each market, let's be honest.
  10. Would a few seasons there be worth it over remaining in Nassau while trying to figure out their situation? Seeing as Nassau is literally falling apart (the roof is leaking, they have to strip the asbestos out), I'd say they could do a couple years in Brooklyn between the end of their ironclad Nassau lease and the completion of a new arena. I wouldn't make it permanent; it really doesn't seem like a very good hockey rink at all. Question for Gothamite: with the renaissance of Brooklyn, is suburban Long Island, in some sense, dying? All I read is that the high taxes and NIMBYism/BANANAism are sending everyone out of there. I mean, it's not that people won't live there anymore, just that maybe there won't be that sort of enormous middle class that would justify building a 17,000-seat arena outside of New York City. Anyway, this press conference is probably just to say they have the arena stuff figured out, finally. I doubt they're going to come right out and say "nous avons acheté les Coyotes," because that would make the NHL very mad. I guess Quebecor people are gonna be there, though. I saw my first ever game at the Nassau Mausoleum back in November for Rangers/Isles. Awesome atmosphere with about a 50/50 crowd. That's about it though... The actual seats were falling apart, there's basically zero food options, it's the single worst concourse ever constructed, you can't move anywhere. I think there are 4 bathrooms period with about 4 urinals each. What's the point? It's time to leave...though the last row of the upper deck you still are relatively close to the action and it does have great sightlines for hockey.
  11. The Isles still need to get a new arena and there appears to be none on the horizon... It would be interesting to see if playing at the Barclays Centre would be viable long-term.... It's probably not viable long term, as it was built primarily for basketball and not as a joint-tenant setup. It's too small for NHL Hockey long-term.
  12. It could but it couldn't if that makes sense. I know, I know, Yankees/Dodgers/Giants and all that, but that was a bygone era. The Mets filled the NL void and that was already 50 years ago. In today's world, a new team would really only draw people who couldn't afford to go to Mets/Yankees games, couldn't easily get to Mets/Yankees games, and their only draw would really be hosting the Mets/Yankees. If it were 1950 it's one thing. In 2012, it's just not going to happen. And if you WERE to do it, you'd almost certainly have to put the team in Jersey. You can't do it in Manhattan (look at what the Jets wanted to do, and that was just for 8 Sundays a year, we know how that ended, imagine 81 dates with weeknights and mid-week matinees), the Yankees and Mets would charge a TON for the rights, and the Mets and Yankees are located where it's easy enough to get there from the city and Long Island. From Jersey you still need a couple of bridges or train transfers. (When I'm not living in California I'm about 10 minutes west of Newark, and on a weekend it's about 50-60 minutes to Flushing for the Mets, which is fine, but not THAT frequently). I think you'd have to do it in Jersey, and even then, the other teams are just too well established and in this day and age, I don't think it would work. If you had 3 teams here for the last 60 years, it'd be one thing. But adding it now would make viability quite tough. If the Mets and Yanks were in the same league that may be a different story, or if the Mets never existed and you still had a National League void in 2012, those are ways a new team here could work. But as is, not in 2012. Insert joke here about the Mets not being NY's 2nd team.
  13. No, yeah I totally can't distinguish between these and licensed replicas...
  14. Yeah, I think this was a "let's not stir the JAX/BUF/MIN/STL pot, especially leading up to the Super Bowl, so blah blah blah". If you're going to do that you may as well go to 36 and go back to 3 divisions and 6 teams each (on edit: I meant per conference)...though that would take up 10 of your 16 (18?) game schedule in-division and that'd be too much. 5 teams and half the season wasn't too bad when there were 30, but that would be too much.
  15. Changing the thread name to an awesome Scrubs reference FTW.
  16. I agree. I expect to see that spreading to other teams, too (like the gold-tinted jerseys for the banner-raising game, which is common in both the NBA and MLB now). Well you can't really do it for other sports because room becomes an issue. You can't put an entire NFL roster on a banner.
  17. I think the player names on the border is a nice touch.
  18. SNY would jump at the opportunity to have the Whalers. All they have from October to February is reruns of the Mets 1982 highlight film and Golden Gloves boxing matches and some stupid game show named Beer Money. MSG & MSG+ have all 3 NYC-Metro Area Teams and NESN has the Bruins for the uninitiated...also the MSG that the Sabres are on is the former EMPIRE network and does NOT appear on the MSG's in the NY Metro area.
  19. This is absurd, but TSN is once again getting everyone in a frenzy (though McKenzie DOES concede there are no plans): http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=381071
  20. Looks worse than Boston's record in the finals... Curious, do the refs of the SCF get one too? Don't quote me on this but I think officials get a special ring commemorating that they officiated the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup finals, World Series, etc. I'm pretty sure they get something. He was just blaming the officiating for his Canucks not showing up after Game 2...
  21. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the use of sarcasm? I understand. I was just pointing out that there was at best 1/3 of the annouced addentee in the actual stadium. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here and say that picture was taken during warmup, but there can't be more than 500 people in the seats right then. Unfortunately that pic is not from warm ups. Notice the position of the players on the ice, not to mention the refs. Sadly that is game action. If you zoom in you can see there's 17-someodd minutes to play in the first. Also the benches are full which wouldn't happen in warmups. Hello Les Nordiques.
  22. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/sports/articles/2011/07/22/20110722phoenix-coyote-season-ticket-sales-up.html I know it's old but it's worth noting if nothing else:
