Couple more looks at FSU’s turquoise. This looks like a lock to happen this year.

This just looks so bad to me, the colors don't complement each other whatsoever. They look like the non-contact practice jerseys that QBs wear

...and there's a wonky numeral. Not the worst I've seen, but that 3 could certainly be improved a lot. However, the pant stripe looks great and provides that much needed pop of red to the mix.

I do really respect the move to be flexible and share an official image after recognizing that the leak was making the rounds. I've said this before, but as much as I love leaks for the sake of discussion here, they're such a hype killer and awful for shaping the public perception of new designs. The way it looks on real athletes in professional lighting versus the video model wearing an oversized jersey in a cellphone pic is just a night and day difference. Kudos to the Texans for getting ahead of it.

Honestly, this looks fine. Will need to see the jersey striping better and the likely stripe-less pants will be a donwgrade, but the number font looks pretty cool and it still really resembles the current well-liked road uniform.

That said, I could also easily see this being the most tame of the upcoming set. There are supposed to be 4 unique designs, right? This would likely check the "Toro" look off the list.

  4. The current Colorado Avalanche look just makes me think of an ICEE, especially when the red and blue flavors start to bleed together.

ICEE-Red-Cherry-Blue-Raspberry-Swirled-SWould it be too derivative to do something like the Colorado Rapids and change the current denim blue to a sky blue? Would provide much better contrast at least.

  5. The Flames finally have it pretty much perfect with their current set. The classics are right for the main look while the Blasty alternate is a prefect switch up that scratches any itch I have to see the black incorporated with the red and yellow again. It doesn't hurt that the Blasty alternates are some of my favorite jerseys in the NHL.

Don't get me wrong, this is a really nice, well-balanced set visually, but it always irks me from a logic perspective. The "C" is obviously on fire, so it shouldn't be colored as though it is burnt charcoal or something like it is here.

That's me overthinking of course, but it still crosses my mind everytime I see this Flames look.

I like the current logo, but I really enjoy this concept done by Twitter user @lolwtferic that emphasizes the proportions of a Clipper ship in a more traditional way. Well, it's great except for trying to cram the "LA" into the top sail at least.

I'm gonna go off on a tangent here that will make me seem like a conspiracy theorist, but what if the NFL/Nike's prerogative is to design bad/mediocre uniforms on purpose so that they can turn around, pull them 5 years later, and milk more money from fans with a new, more popular set? It's happening with the Jets and Lions where they introduced generally mixed or unpopular uniforms, only to scrap them relatively early on in their lifespan in favor of more fan-favorite looks (i.e. Jets' modern "collegiate" look to the "Sack Exchange" throwback uniforms). The last couple of redesigns from the Cardinals and Commanders seem like they may be set up for the same fate. There have been rumors swirling around the Titans too, although its for sure not gonna happen this year.

The reason why I say this is because if the description of the Broncos uniforms that we have seen is legit, I can imagine some fans just liking it anyway, as is always the case with something new and fresh, but there will be a lot of visible discontent. In general, the white-heavy look seems gimmicky and overdone, especially with the obnoxious "icey fresh" jargon we have seen with the color in football in  recent years. The Broncos did a fan survey at the beginning of this process, and I can tell you without even looking at the results that they were in no way reflective of what they have (allegedly) decided to go with, just knowing as a Broncos fan myself. Seems like its a ripe opportunity to get fans to cash in on the early hype with a trendy new set, have them grow old of it quickly, and then bring back a throwback look full time to rake in even more money. It's easier to convince fans to get new jerseys if they are actually a new product, and not just carried over to a new brand or template.

I don't want to rush to conclusions just because we haven't seen what the Broncos new uniforms will look like, but given recent design trends and how they've been received, it just seems like Nike and the NFL have found a way to get fans to spend more on jerseys through planned obsolescence. And again, this may all just be all crazy talk, but there has to be an explanation for all the new designs that we already know will be outdated and tired within a few years.

I think you're correct to an extent, although I wouldn't be so sure that it's quite as malicious or even planned as you say. I don't necessarily see Nike as designing planned obsolescence in their football uniforms, but most teams requesting new looks are ones that wish to mark new eras in their franchise and tap into a younger, more trendy image that they likely lack currently. The nature of trends of course is that what was once fresh and futuristic quickly becomes stale, so a sort of cycle is created as the fanbase quickly tires of the once trendy look and yearns for something more nostalgic. It's a phenomenon that's acutally pretty natural in lots of areas of design I think.

  8. This new Lightning third jersey is mediocrity to a tee. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, but that's also why it feels so forgettable and uninteresting to me overall. The only things that I really like are the embroidery treatment on the logo and the drop shadow on the numbers. The rest just feels like a catalogue order for a college club team.

  9. The logo moving down from the base of the collar is the biggest question mark for me with this new template. There's literally no advantage to removing it from where it was before, and you're further cluttering that space where the names have already been shrunken down. The only reason behind it that it could potentially streamline production to keep the elements closer together so that they can be applied in fewer steps, but that may just be some of the Fanatics reputation affecting my thought process

    It's the armpit squares.

    Why are there armpit squares?

(My theory, and i am being 100% serious, is that they decided they wanted to retain a piece of the old uniforms so they slid the shoulder yokes -- which in the Nike era were so thin they could almost be described as stripes -- down under the armpit so that they could place the new kewl sword design thingy on the shoulders. And someone at Nike explained that and somebody representing the Titans was like OH HECK YEAH THIS IS GENIUS)

    The result? Armpit squares.

I agree, it's ultimately the element that kills the uniform as a whole. To me, it screams design by committee decision after they had likely moved far along in the process with the sword yoke design before realizing that would only feature columbia blue on the sleeve cuffs (which would be obscured on half of the players) and a thin number outline. It was a total switch in color balance that probably freaked a lot of executives out, and as a result led to throwing that in at the last minute.

The current uniforms could work if you eliminated the armpit squares, rework the number font, and match the pant stripes to the helmet stripe. They wouldn't necessarily be my favorite Titans uniforms and would still suffer from color balance issues, but they would at least work as a cohesive idea.

Titans official reporter says no new uniforms coming this year. I could still see perhaps some minor tweak that most people wouldn't notice being behind the sources saying otherwise, but that likely ends that rumor.

  12. I think that the only chrome helmet setup that even kinda works is LA, and those would still look 100x better if they were simply a metallic sliver finish.

I'd much prefer more teams to try a matte finish like what the Coyotes opted into with their third jerseys. Would fit most teams' jerseys better and still adds a really nice elevated touch to the uniform

    Two things:

There was a much different approach to design in the 60s when the original Falcons logo debuted. I'm not sure if it was originally meant to imply an F or not, but the now-current logo certainly was intended to, well, "strongly imply" the F. Speaking of, I don't see a problem in "implying" certain elements, but there are instances where it becomes obvious and thus kinda ruins the whole thing. Like this:

    62f38b74b6f326df7115e6bff172d2de.png

It's the difference between connotative and denotative design. When it's connotative, it's nicely built in (and in the grand visual hierarchy, it may be one of the last things the eye picks up). When it denotative, it's done on purpose, often starting from that point and working backwards (which is what I believe happened with the above Wolves example; that tree in the fur is way too obvious. Matthew Wolff did a great job in fixing that with the current Wolves logo.)

Now, for the second thing. That Grizzlies logo was originally designed while the club was still in Vancouver, so of course Memphis wouldn't have any kind connection to it. That said, their now-current and to me vastly inferior alternate logo does imply an M:

    3a7a9d77-f830-4d64-a876-831edb738123-Gri

You'd have to look very hard to see it if you didn't already know it was there, but the top three claws are what imply the M. (Thus, it's connotative; it connotes, or projects the idea of, an M.) For reference, here's the preceding version(s) of that claw-ball mark:

    c99cd7d70b1ad62311e92ccda70624fc.png

This raises a whole other line of questioning, whether "sanitizing" that logo (my words, but pretty much the same thing Tampa did with the current Jolly Roger logo as compared to the pre-2013 version) just to be clever and imply the M was really worth sacrificing the superior dynamism of the previous version(s). But that's what they did, and that's what we got.

    Design. Decisions, decisions....

This is a great breakdown of something I think that can be seen a lot in new logo designs. I think that everybody loves meaning behind design decisions and wants great storytelling to help sell their ideas, but going too far with it can come at the cost of a better and simpler idea. The logo that the Browns ended up picking for the Dawg Pound is a great example of this problem I think. The design is mostly fine, but it has some odd visual aspects simply because the designer wanted to create something that had as much local symbolism in it as possible rather than something that simply portrays a dog well.

    2023-06-12-dog-logo-winner.jpg?w=900

There are some instances that incorporate the symbolism pretty naturally, like the helmet stripe that nearly all of the concepts featured. However, did the dog really need an unnatural, lumpy highlight in its ear that can sort of be skewed to look like Ohio? Or the weird helmet shape over the right eye? We're losing sight of the point and making the form take a backseat to every idea of what Cleveland is that you could possibly think of.

For the Falcons and Eagles, I see those as sort of happy design coincidences. If you see an F or an E in those logos then that is like a fun easter egg for the viewer, but it's definitely not what the logo aims to depict. To compare them to something like the Bengals B logo that is literally just a letterform with a texture is not accurate.

  15. These are really great, I love the update in particular. I know that you're trying to emulate the original Roughnecks jerseys with the small notch where the side panels meet the sleeves, but I think that if you lined them up then this concept would be pretty much perfect. I always interpreted that as an imperfection in the original template rather than a design feature.

It all just reminds me of time on here when we were discussing a new NBA city-whatever uniform, and someone decided that I was being intentionally obtuse because I said I didn’t know that apparently every third street in Atlanta is named Peachtree.

But in truth I really didn’t know that.  But much much more importantly I didn’t… and don’t… care what local significance Peachtree has. Because once again, it’s stupid.

    So yes, I know how many feet are in a mile.  But the very idea of sticking it on the uniform of a national brand sports team makes me want to;

    A.  Play dumb to not give them the satisfaction, and…

    B.  Punch them in the face for being way less clever than they think they are.

Thinking it's dumb is fine, I agree that placing "5280" on a Broncos uniform would be dumb. That said, feigning obliviousness toward generally well known cultural facts does not reflect well on that point.

For the record, you were called obtuse because outside of claiming to be unaware of Georgia's status as the Peach state, your exact argument was "I would have no idea which team this uniform belongs to" referring to a uniform with Hawks logos on it.

Michigan in any of these combos against Washington in Gold-Purple-Gold would've been a fantastic visual matchup, one of the best in recent years. Funny how both teams ended up fumbling their combos and taking all of the vibrant colors out of the matchup.

  18. I am really concerned about what the potential new Lions' uniforms will look like considering their recent fixation with the blank pants and monochrome combos. Their current set is great and I just feel confident that any change will be for the worse.

It's not the worst monochrome combo out there, but what a shame really. I was already rooting for Washington and this makes it easier

    Brilliant stuff.

I would dare to say that most average people don't remember or had even heard of the original UFL. The name also makes sense here at least.
