  1. The biggest problems with the Sharks look to me is that the teal is too dark and as a result the black and teal don't have enough contrast. So the black and teal mix on the white jersey.

It's like the reverse of how the silver blends into the white on the old Sabres jerseys and ends up making the blue stripe look spindly and thin.

  2. The Ducks can use 90s "fad colours" because they're a 90s team. 90s fads are part of their history. They should look like a team that was founded in the early 90s. Just like how the Sharks should use a brighter teal and the Panthers should go back to athletic gold instead of the flat vegas.

  3. It's not a coincidence that of the past several new teams to join the league, almost all of them have shown up with a navy blue home jersey.

    Seattle - NAVY

    Vegas - Grey

    Winnipeg - NAVY

    Columbus - NAVY

    Minnesota - Dark Green

    Atlanta - NAVY

    Nashville - NAVY

  4. This series has been really great.

I think the Kings away could use a lot more purple. The alternate logo is great, but I feel like it's so close to having the mane make an L A that you might as well go all the way with it.

I like what you've done with the Wild but I've never been a fan of concepts that put wheat trim on the white sweater.

  5. The updated 2D Senator logo is a really interesting case I think. I've long thought it was excellent and should have become their primary, but I can also see the case that it's very late-2000s and a bit soulless. The things that make the 90s one flawed are probably what makes Sens fans see it as stately and timeless I guess.

Ultimately, Sens fans seem to have disliked the updated version and desperately wanted the vintage one. So ultimately what can ya do.

I'll give some level of balance to the home jersey because all three colours are used fairly prominently, but is it really the perfect balance when one of those colours, wheat, doesn't appear on the away jersey (logos notwithstanding) and the only red is the numbers and the NHL collar zone?

I've never personally felt like making the numbers a different colour works for balance. If anything, it highlights the lack of red in the jersey because they stick out so much.

Yes, because wheat on a white jersey never looks good. It works as the trim for the logos.

The forest green on white looks real sharp and the numbers add a splash of colour.

The last time the Panthers decided to add powder blue to their palette, everyone found it tired and annoying. Now, it's a stroke of genius. I don't begrudge people liking it, I see why some might like it, but the unanimity of the response is odd. I don't think any of these sweaters earned unanimous praise.

The only conclusion I can draw is that people in media really want you to like the Florida Panthers right now, as they did with the Hurricanes a few years ago.

    i'll help you out then...

The three biggest trends in hockey jerseys in 2010, when the powder jersey came out, were:

    1. Fauxbacks
    2. Roundel logos
    3. Double-blue

The Panthers had no legitimate connection to any of the three but jumped on it anyway. Add in the weird JetBlue thing and yeah.

This sweater uses their popular palm tree logo, their 90s template, and their original colours + powder blue. The effect is tropical instead of dull and lifeless. Even if it's being overrated it's no surprise that it's popular considering current fashion

The color scheme is arguably the best thing about those jerseys. It’s unique, it’s eye-grabbing, and it’s undoubtedly D.C. No other city could pull off blue and bronze except the nation’s capital.

Red-white-blue is a generic color scheme. Sure, I get using it in D.C., but why not embrace a unique palette instead of one that  a fifth of the league uses in some capacity?

Blue bronze and white? Maybe. But add the black and it reads to me as pure late-90s dull colours.

  9. most of adidas' crummy work in the NHL was alternate jerseys that hardly anyone remembers while they dutifully tidied up plenty of reebok's messes  on actual primary uniforms.

the worry with Nike is that they would bring the worst of Adidas in a huge way (with ugly city/icon/whatever jerseys and primary jersey redesigns) with none or few of the positives.

    The problems are two-fold.

The first is that in this era of mass media it's easier for younger fans to see and experience older teams than its ever been before. Media is so all-encompassing that the idea that younger fans just don't know about teams that played before they were born isn't true anymore.

The second is that they seem to always return to the Gretzky look anyway. They went to navy, copper, and salmon of all things in the late 90s and rode that until the Edge changeover when they butchered that identity. Then they just decided to go to the classic Gretzky look and everyone was happy.

Then they decided they needed a unique look for McDavid's era. So the royal became navy again and orange became the primary. How effective was that? Well we're on the verge of the Gretzky look (or something based off of it) again.

Maybe it's because the era in orange was just as disappointing as what came before. Maybe orange just didn't land with the fanbase (it is close to arch rival Calgary's red and gold). Whatever reason they're returning to the classic look. Again.

So if the Oilers are going to constantly try and change their brand only to return to the look they wore when they won five Cups then maybe... just maybe... that's what they should just be wearing?

    bUt No OnE rEmEmBeRs GrEtZkY

Come on now. Yes they do. The Gretzky Oilers were arguably the greatest hockey team ever assembled. So good they lost the best player ever and still won another Cup.

When you have that history it's not the worse thing ever to just rep that look all the time.

I'm not saying younger fans don't remember Gretzky or aren't aware of those older teams. I'm saying when I (as a 26 year old, and I imagine this is the case for younger fans as well) see those jerseys on a modern template, the subconscious association I make is with Hall/Eberle/Nugent-Hopkins/Schultz/Yakupov and not with the Gretzky era.

  11. Frankly, for a younger generation of fans the royal blue jerseys don't bring memories of the Gretzky years - they bring to mind the constant failure of the 2010 to 2016 Oilers.

Even if I wasn't huge on the orange primary look, at least it was kind of acknowledging that and building a new look for a new era. Navy + orange could have been a very sharp McDavid-era identity if they stuck to it (and made a navy version of the classic sweater the primary)

  12. My position: I love the Avs colours, I wish the blue was slate-ier, on TV it often just looks royal blue.

That said. The grey colour should be lightened and maybe even shinied like the Kings have. I don't think it's doing a satisfactory job of separating the burgundy and blue right now.

  13. I love the Flames' 2004-07 look but it's definitely not timeless. The angular arm stripes and hem were such a 90s/00s trend and you don't see it anymore. If they want to bring them back, they can just straighten out those stripes though.

The Flames' 1980s jerseys are timeless because they're simple - stripes, shoulder yoke, etc. There aren't any gimmicks. If you think they're boring, lack contrast, etc. that's fine, but they don't really look of their time.

I wanted to ask this question of the board regarding the Avs numbers.  With the updated look they've been called cleaner, but also seen some complain about the blue touching the burgundy on the sleeves.  I had a couple thoughts but wasn't sure if this is a backwards move.

Here is the new font, with double stroke like the old (still with black for this discussion).

    spacer.png

Also, here is the new font with points added back to the 0, 6, 8, and 9 to be similar to the original font.

    spacer.png

Would any of this have helped move away from a 90's look?  Lateral or no difference?  Just toying with ideas. I guess part of my question is what part of the original numbers makes them dated? The design or the double stroke?

I think double strokes in general look very 90s-2000s now. A lot of teams like the Avs, Bruins, Oilers, and Pens have moved away from them because they muddle the look of the jerseys on TV and generally are a lot messier looking.

  15. I used to think that 2003-04 was the peak of NHL jerseys as well but I have to agree, as much as I like navy blue as a jersey colour the league was way way way too navy blue and black at that point. There were 7 black teams, 7 navy teams,  and 7 of the other teams had a black or navy alternate.

  16. The serif B is fine but honestly I kinda think it has too much going on. Too many outlines And it stands out among the rest of the O6 who are all using logos that are decades old (Leafs being basically just a clean-up of the pre-expansion design).
