So does rebranding after a relocation suddenly make you ineligible for throwback jerseys? People don't seem to take issue with the Lakers wearing Minneapolis throwbacks, or Memphis breaking out the Vancouver Grizzlies uniforms, but suddenly it's a problem when the Canes & Titans decide to dip into their history.

I grew up as an  Expos fan, and I didn't have any issue with the Nationals dressing in the old powder blue Montreal uniforms a few years ago.

It doesn't necessarily have to do with the rebrand itself. Most of the negative reaction has to do with how the franchise handles the history of the previous location. A rebrand is often a sign that the franchise isn't recognizing that previous history though.

When teams like the Canes move and start from a blank slate (not recognizing retired numbers, new team name, etc.), they kind of lose the right to wear throwbacks. If they haven't previously celebrated the history of the former location of the franchise, then wearing/selling throwbacks just looks like a complete moneygrab.

I would loosely liken it to the difference between Canada and the USA's relationship with the British monarchy (not a direct analogy, but hear me out). If the US all of a sudden started printing the monarchs on their money, we would all kind of collectively say WTF.

I have to push back on these two. I've become a fan recently of adding detail when possible and both of these are great ways of doing so. Hanger effects are a way to add just another touch to jerseys and as you said, they won't be seen on the ice, so there's no issue there. Sublimated striping patterns can add a rich texture to jerseys without going overboard. I agree that Calgary's alt isn't really using it well, but Vancouver's and alt and especially San Jose's current set look great.

We should keep in mind too that the jerseys are also retail products. Adding details that fans get to see every time they put on a jersey before a game is great in my mind as long as it doesn't detract from the look on the ice, which these don't.

That logo is way too big. And IDK if it's just cause we're used to the diaganol RANGERS wordmark but that logo just doesn't look right on a jersey.

I said it before and I'll say it again. How do you come out with these when you had both the navy and royal lady liberty reverse retros staring you in the face? They really Patrik Stefan'd this.

the weirdest thing for me is that technically the Rangers crest should work great on a jersey, it's like perfect proportionately for a hockey crest. Still looks weird though which I have to assume is purely based on previous perception of the team. Kind of a weird scenario where the history outways "proper" design ideas...For some reason I think if they had always had the crest on the jerseys we would all love it, but it just doesn't work that way

Although I am not a fan of Dan Simon, there is no denying his studio produces excellent work. Brandiose's work is simply too goofy for my tastes.

Am I missing something here about reasons to not like Dan? Granted this was ten plus years ago now, but he was always really gracious offering critics on my work when I was just a high school student and he was one of the biggest things in sports branding. This might not really be the place to discuss but just wanted to offer that my experience with Dan has been great.

I think that’s white dazzle fabric that just looks silver compared to the regular fabric of the stripe and socks

now that I've looked closer at the uniform history this must be the case because of the pants stripe difference, but weird that the sock stripes even look like a different shade than the sanitaries

You people can go cry some more because someone posted a Sports Design opinion on a thread about Sports Design...  You can get your panties in a twist because someone pointed out how many times a striping template has been recycled ad nauseam by Adidas.

For the record my personal replies to you had nothing to do with your design opinions, and everything to do with your attitude. I might not agree with you and that's fine. Actually I'd go so far as to say it's great. If we all had the same opinions every thread would just be one post with 1000 likes on it. Treat people with less hostility, and you might see the same back.

Just because someone has experience in the industry and knows how it works, doesn't mean their work is exempt from criticism.  The amount of designs, we've seen from Adidas, that look like they were dashed off in less than 5 minutes, these past five years, is staggering.  I don't work for WWE but I'm allowed to say their product has been extremely underwhelming for a long time.   You put something in the public domain, people are going to have opinions about it.  Especially on a forum where people share their opinions on uniform designs.  Get over it.

I don't expect him to do anything except stop making excuses for why new designs look like a total of 5 minutes of effort were spent on them.  The Arena's jersey just looks half-assed but the "Smashville" jersey was indefensible and I remember hearing a bunch of excuses about that too...  Back in 2006, the designer's behind the Sabres 'Slug' could be criticized and rightfully so.  I don't remember anyone on hear saying "that designer works for Reebok and knows the process so him and his work are off limits from criticism."  Give me a break.

If that Arena's jersey is the result of "the process" then there is something seriously wrong with said process that should be evaluated.  I don't buy the excuse that "this is best we could do because we only had a year."  Someone could make a better design in 5 minutes.

There is a difference between criticizing the final product and being an asshat. Talk about how much you hate the design all you want, I'm not a huge fan of it either. But if someone is going to go out of their way to explain to you why something might have ended up this way  then don't turn around and say :censored: like "full of excuses as usual". That's not design criticism. This board has driven away enough people who can offer this kind of insight, let's not continue to do it.

I don't know how legit these guys are.. But I translate this as "We did the Nets '97 rebrand and we've been tasked to do it again" followed by pics of their previous prototypes

  9. One thought I had might be to find some way to honour those who provide valuable and useful feedback. I feel another problem with the concept forums as they are now is there is a lack of constructive criticism. Some sort of award in the vein of the "Builder's category" for people who may not create concepts of their own but still provide excellent advice might be cool.

Most Helpful C&C Giver will be one of the yearly awards, so we're definitely taking that into account. C&C is one of the most important aspects of the concepts forum so we definitely want to reward those who take their time to give a well thought out opinion.

On another note. I just finished my 4 hour long journey through last years concepts yesterday and I wanted to mention that I was really impressed. For the amount that everybody seems to bash the direction the concepts forum has taken, there was still a lot of incredible work done last year.

I think the main problem right now is that good work isn't being recognized because:

a ) There is an overwhelming amount of sloppy concepts that push good concepts off the first page, and

b ) A majority of the older users seem to have given up on the forum entirely

Anyway, I'm really excited to see all of that change in the near future. Preparing for these awards has already revived my interest in the forum. Hopefully once the winners are announced the same will happen for the rest of the community. :)
