  1. This concept makes me believe bone could work... for throwback/fauxback purposes.

The reason it failed with the Rams is because they also incorporated their gold and white. Seeing the white stripe against a bone background made the jerseys and pants look dingy and gross. But if a team like Carolina or Jacksonville wanted to make a fauxback with their darker colors and using bone in place of white, I think it could work.

You don't have to be this guy. Lots of people care about the Blue Jackets. It's in Columbus because they haven't participated in an outdoor game yet and there's a famous outdoor sports venue in the city that would've been used years ago, but the outgoing OSU athletic director was a stubborn wrench that prevented any discussions with the NHL and Ohio State. He's finally retiring and getting out of the way, which is why it's now happening in Columbus.

They do. Currently averaging >93% capacity with a reliable season ticket base to watch a team who's going to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

That's because they aren't a candidate for relocation. At all.

    I'll vouch for this.

I've never been a die-hard hockey fan, but I've been to 2 CBJ games in my lifetime and despite both being losses, I had a blast each time. Looking to go again before the season's over to take my girlfriend out for her birthday. A ton of my colleagues are season ticket holders as well.

You'd think the 'Jackets were annual playoff contenders the way the crowds show up at Nationwide. Not only is it a great venue itself, but there are tons of great restaurants and bars within a short walk.

Is Green Light Racing more competitive than Jordan Anderson Racing and Big Machine? Those are the three teams outside of Kaulig in the Xfinity with alliances to RCR. I’d imagine Wendy’s would want to be on the most competitive car.

Chances are RCR wouldn’t want to field a one-off third car unless they decided to put Suarez in the 3.

If it was Kaulig, they definitely would’ve announced it alongside the Wendy’s reveal.

While Kaulig would've also been my expectation, the team just announced Daniel "The Nutcracker" Dye will be driving their #10 "Pay Driver" "ALL STAR" car in the season-opener at Daytona, so Kaulig is out of the question.

Besides, it doesn't really matter if the team they choose to partner with is competitive. If a Cup team has the funding to bring a driver in for a race or two, they'll buy a seat from the mid-pack and backmarkers to attempt the race. The most common example the last few years has been Stewart-Haas buying seats from BJ McLeod and SS Greenlight for Kevin Harvick, Chase Briscoe, and Cole Custer.

    Chase-Briscoe-Charlotte-scaled.jpg

In fact, that's how SS Greenlight "won" the race at Auto Club in 2022 with Custer behind the wheel. Cole dominated that race in an SHR-prepped car, but because it was racing under the SS Greenlight banner, they got credit for the win.

    22FON1BE_1600.jpg?w=1000&h=576&crop=1

We're also seeing that on a full-season scale with Trackhouse basically buying a seat from Kaulig to run SVG in Xfinity this year. The car is clearly branded like the Trackhouse cars, but it'll run under the Kaulig banner. And knowing Kaulig's performance last year and expectations this year, I'd assume that 97 is being prepped by Trackhouse.

The lousier thing is that after this, Eagles get (in order) Bills, 49ers, @Seahawks, @Dallas, while the Lions get Middle-West Southern Wyoming Jr. College, Kalamazoo Sr. High School, a nunnery, and a group of literal toddlers behind a daycare.

So if this goes as expected, the Lions have the inside track at #1, and Dallas controls their destiny for the East, so Eagles could fall to #5.

After yesterday's performance against the Windy City YMCA I'm not so sure Detroit has the "inside track" to the #1 seed. Sure the schedule looks easy, but Detroit is maybe three plays away from being 5-5 on the year rather than 8-2.

About two years ago, Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson both joked about fabricating or heavily paraphrasing their so-called reports. One big difference: they didn't do so on the sworn enemy of respectable media.

I've been a sideline reporter once or twice (okay, it was when I was in college radio covering a D3 program...) but honestly, I totally get where they're coming from, minus the bit about coaches smelling their perfume.

From my perspective, a sideline reporter's main value is 1) providing injury updates, and 2) initial postgame reaction on the field or on the sideline. So these types of "coach, what do you need to do better in the next quarter/half)" type of interviews don't truly add anything to the broadcast or the viewers' experience of watching the game.

Props to them for being able to come up with SOMETHING on the spot because I know I would've rambled in those situations.

Grand Rapids reminds me of Coachella Valley's logo that's pretty similar. Who did the work on these?

I immediately thought the same thing when I saw that logo. Not sure who created it though. There's definitely some similarities such as the shading around the eye, having five "feathers" on each wing, and maybe the highlight on the neck to an extent. It might be different enough to get away though.

This is just a one-off post for a little fun. With all the talk of a possible USFL-XFL merger and there being two Houston teams currently, the general consensus is that one of them will need to go in one way or another.

In my mind, it would make sense to keep the Roughnecks in place as they've been playing there and building a local fanbase (no shade on the Gamblers, I don't doubt they have their followers in Houston also, but its hard to maintain a fanbase from afar when another team is right there playing). Plus Roughnecks is such a Houston area name while Gamblers can work for a lot of areas. There's also the issue of Canton, OH vying for a team after being a good USFL hub host. Ohio does have some history with gambling, with riverboat gambling along the Ohio River, so I thought they could be a good future home and mocked up a quick logo for a relocated Ohio Gamblers. Right now all I have is a logo for them, but I thought I'd share it. Part of me considered changing the gold star to bronze or the shade of the Hall of Fame jackets to represent being the home of the Hall of Fame, but I left it for now at least. Hope you all like.

This isn't bad! I just don't think the name fits in a historical sense. But then again... "tHeRe'S nO lAkEs iN lOs AnGeLeS" either.

Does Ohio has a gambling history though?

Lifelong Ohioan - we've got a few casinos scattered across the state, mostly in the metro areas, but nothing that stands-out. Online sports gambling was just approved back in January, and you couldn't go five seconds without hearing an ad from DraftKings, MGM, FanDuel, etc. (I know they're bad nationwide, but they were promoting this back in November too hyping-up the ability to bet on... Browns games... *shudders*)

Thing of note though, Justin Haley’s uncle currently owns the 31’s charter.

    um ACKShually...

(not saying it isn't true, but Bob's one of the more reliable reporters in the garage area. If he doesn't know, very few do).

My guess is that this is a gateway for Haley to eventually land at RFK, either as Brad's replacement when he eventually retires, or in a third chartered car. For now, he'll be Kaulig's #1 guy and will only have to worry about working with the blue ovals, rather than take Kaulig's team orders (see the Xfinity Atlanta race from a couple weeks ago on how that panned out).

Speaking of Kaulig, Bob believes Austin Hill, one of the favorites for this year's Xfinity title, is the favorite to land the 31 car.

    Hello all!

I've had several people over the last few months ask for my Nike Vapor Untouchable football template. A couple different computers have come and gone since it's initial release in 2018, and I never had the original file available to give to folks... until now.

Recently I launched a new website and decided to dedicate an entire hidden page to the template so that everyone can always go back and download it.

Because this topic won't be pinned, I will include a link in a status on my account here, so if you click my username, you should be able to find a link in the event this thread gets buried. I'll also include a link in my signature for those of you who have them visible.

The template comes preloaded with pre-masked layers, groups, and shapes within the document, so in some cases, all you have to do is click the element you want to recolor or place a new layer in, and boom, you're off and running. This template is designed to be user-friendly, but feel free to make edits to any of the groups, masks, or layers to fit your needs. Please reply to this topic with any technical issues you may have while downloading or using the template and I will answer them to the best of my abilities.

    Happy Designing!

Does Cambridge still let the seniors pick the logo for each year? They rotated between the Clemson paw and this logo's predecessor when we (Claymont) were in the ECOL, in the 1990's.

I'm not sure, honestly. I'm a Muskingum Valley League grad myself (Morgan), but Cambridge primarily plays the other nearby MVL schools such as Coshocton, Meadowbrook, or John Glenn.

  14. My high school never used a college or pro design, but several teams in our area did.

A few years ago, the Maysville Panthers (Zanesville, OH) received $25,000 in new helmets from the Cleveland Browns organization. The team has used them ever since, donning a chrome royal-blue Carolina Panthers logo on one side and numbers on the other.

Across the Muskingum River in Duncan Falls, the Philo Electrics, as you might have guessed, use different versions of the Chargers' iconic lightning bolts on the helmet and jerseys.

    Philo-Maysville-1.jpg

Up the river in Dresden, the Tri-Valley Scotties do have a scottish terrier logo, but lately they seem to have opted for a flipped Virginia Tech "TV" logo instead:

In Coshocton and Caldwell, both teams use modified Chiefs logos and, in Caldwell's case, they also use a stolen @davidson concept.

The Cambridge Bobcats use a black-and-white Ohio Bobcats logo:

The Berne Union Rockets (Sugar Grove, OH) use a red-and-gold, heavily-inspired Toledo Rockets logo:

In Ashville, the Teays Valley Vikings use both a blue-and-gold Minnesota Vikings logo AND a flipped Virginia Tech logo:

  15. Since the announcement that the Arena Football League is planning a comeback, I had the thought of "what if they didn't fail?"

Here is my 28-team, no-rhyme-or-reason Arena Football wish list, including teams that currently play in the IFL and NAL.

    EASTERN CONFERENCE

    Northern Division

    Albany Firebirds

    Cleveland Gladiators

    Columbus Destroyers

    Detroit Drive

Massachusetts Pirates (considered relocating to Boston, but we'll keep them in Worcester for now)

New York Dragons (now in Brooklyn)

    Philadelphia Soul

    Southern Division

    Carolina Cobras (Charlotte)

    Georgia Force (Atlanta)

    Jacksonville Sharks

    Nashville Kats

    New Orleans VooDoo

    Orlando Predators

    Tampa Bay Storm

    WESTERN CONFERENCE

    Central Division

    Chicago Rush

    Dallas Desperados

    Grand Rapids Rampage

    Green Bay Blizzard

    Iowa Barnstormers

Quad City/St. Louis Steamwheelers (Feel like the team would've moved to a larger market, i.e. St. Louis, once the Rams skipped town and the league continued to grow)

Tulsa Oilers (Almost went OKC but Tulsa felt like it fit the smaller-market vibe of the AFL a bit better)

    Pacific Division

    Arizona Rattlers

    Colorado Crush

    Las Vegas NightHawks

    Los Angeles Avengers

    San Jose SaberCats

    Spokane Shock

    Utah Blaze

  16. It's been awhile since I last posted a concept.

With the news of the Arena Football League eyeing a comeback with *checks notes* ...16 franchises... It got me thinking of the ArenaFL of yesteryears. I'm talking pre-bankruptcy when the league would peak at 19 teams in a single season and draw in 10k or more per game.  I was too young to enjoy the league but I did have the PS2 Arena Football game. I've always enjoyed the brands that came out of this era of Arena Football, and you could argue that this is what got me interested in branding/sports design/logos in the first place.

One of my favorite brands of this era was the Grand Rapids Rampage. I couldn't tell you anything about this team, honestly, but I've always liked their logo. However, if we're to bring them back to the arena in 2023, we're gonna have to give the rhino a facelift.

Without further ado, this is how I imagine Grand Rapids would look in today's world:

The new AFL will feature 16 franchises that will be rolled out over the next year, according to Gaines. He also says the league will be a mix of new clubs and previous teams.

Holy oversaturation, Batman! Six teams would've been somewhat reasonable... but sixTEEN? I'm anticipating 6-10 of those teams don't even see the field.

  18. I was scrolling through Facebook recently and came across this bizarre high school basketball uniform matchup. The Watkins Memorial Warriors (Etna, OH) were playing host to the Zanesville Blue Devils (Zanesville, OH), but you wouldn't really be able to tell that or, really, who-was-who as both teams wore uniforms sponsored by the ARMY National Guard, with Watkins (I believe) wearing white at home, and Zanesville wearing the black uniforms:

    sXI7il8.png

    ef78YzZ.png

I don't know enough about these types of deals in high school athletics, but I know that it's not limited to basketball, by any means. In football, the Army National Guard has sponsored uniforms for dozens of teams across the state.

    9ce68adb-ed6c-4a67-8093-6cfb139879ea-FFFootballcamojerseys.jpg?width=300&height=473&fit=crop&format=pjpg&auto=webp

The biggest issue with the football uniform, as you can see, is the black numbers on camo. As a football broadcaster for radio, I'm thankful I have only called one game with a team in this jersey (looking at you, Reynoldsburg). We have at least three teams in our coverage area have black, red, and white color schemes - two of which play in the same division - and are indistinguishable from each other in photos because of this.

I've been told that these are basically trade deals where the Army National Guard provides teams with a full uniform set and basically get free publicity in return. You see this more often on Military  Appreciation nights. I understand the gesture, but there's gotta be a better, simpler way.

Interesting... both KCAL and KCBS' news divisions have been rebranded to KCAL News

This reminds me of one of the funniest moments from my time as a news reporter.

I was working for a small-town Gannett affiliate paper in 2021. That fall, students from the local high school walked-out and staged a protest over faculty not properly handling bullying, racism, etc. within the school. I talked to the kids, staff, school admins, etc., wrote about it, then the story got posted to our facebook page where it spread like wildfire in the community (you can imagine the type of "discussions" being had, but that's not the point). In my mind, it was just another story and was moving on to my next assignment.

That afternoon I get a phone call from a TV Reporter, saying he had reached out to the Sheriff's office to confirm the details and was wondering where I got my sources. I rarely got calls like that, if ever, so I asked where he was calling from. He said "Oh sorry, I'm with KCAL in Los Angeles. I know it's a bit strange, but you can find me on Twitter, LinkedIn, verify me on there, etc.".

I replied "uh, sir, I'm in Lancaster, OHIO, not Lancaster, CALIFORNIA." (Quick note for those who don't know, Lancaster,  OH is pronounced LANG-kis-terr, as opposed to the wrong way).

Dude went silent before I heard him say ".... you're s****ing me."

We had a good laugh about it lol.
