  1. Still need to see the others, overall it looks like a lateral move but from what I've seen I do NOT like that number font. It looks like someone is trying to draw it from memory and can't remember which direction the serifs and edges are supposed to go.

  2. As far as the actual Broncos rumours go, there's some details that sound awful, others that actually sound good if done properly.

The biggest issue I have is the alleged white helmet. Whether its Navy or Royal blue, I think Denver belongs in a blue helmet/orange jersey/white pants uniform.

I'm gonna go off on a tangent here that will make me seem like a conspiracy theorist, but what if the NFL/Nike's prerogative is to design bad/mediocre uniforms on purpose so that they can turn around, pull them 5 years later, and milk more money from fans with a new, more popular set? It's happening with the Jets and Lions where they introduced generally mixed or unpopular uniforms, only to scrap them relatively early on in their lifespan in favor of more fan-favorite looks (i.e. Jets' modern "collegiate" look to the "Sack Exchange" throwback uniforms). The last couple of redesigns from the Cardinals and Commanders seem like they may be set up for the same fate. There have been rumors swirling around the Titans too, although its for sure not gonna happen this year.

Likely what we get and while I don't think any of us want a Black alt, we're getting one, so if this is close to what it will be, I can accept these terms since the move to the Sack Exchange home & away is a mega-win for the Jets.

Will remind many of the Black 49ers alts of years ago; I was in the minority of people who didn't hate those as a standalone uniform  (they just didn't suit the 49ers).

To me, the proper New York Jets uniform is the Testaverde/Curtis Martin era uniform -- callback to the classic with a darker shade of green. They really just needed to figure out the striping application.

That’s a great template, but that green is so drab it makes the uniform look lifeless and dreary. I would like to see that striping pattern with the current green.

    You're pretty off base here.

There's nothing to do with promoting the ownership group like your Starbucks example or with something like the Mighty Ducks. There's no financial/advertising conspiracy or corporate synergy here, Orca Bay wanted to change their logo and picked the creature the ownership group was named after.

The orca logo is more akin to the Cleveland Browns being named the Browns or the Calgary Hitmen being named the Hitmen or the Winnipeg Jets having the compass notch in their logo pointing (true) north. The ownership wanted to reflect the ownership in the name or brand in some way.

The theory that gets promulgated all the time is that the Canucks changed to the Orca logo to “promote” Orca Bay. That’s not the case.

If you want to make the ‘synergism’ argument, which is still silly because it isn’t like Orca Bay is some separate entity from the Canucks, that’s fine, but then the Orca being a “corporate” logo makes no sense as a criticism either,

As far as I know, the team nor the ownership group ever went on the record saying that's why they used the orca in their logo, however, everyone naturally made that connection on their own (because, c'mon, it's obvious)

Canucks GM Pat Quinn said at the unveiling back in June '97, "The killer whale is one of the most intelligent creatures in the world and embodies many of the qualities [we] value in [our] hockey team" ... "We are a proud Canadian city [and] our logo will show the world where we're from."

The ownership group took on the Orca Bay name in 1995 and as you said, the orca logo is from 1997.

Now, I'm normally not much for conspiracy theories but I have to believe this one.

The Orca Bay conspiracy theory is complete nonsense.  It does not hold up to basic scrutiny. I say this as someone who does not think the Orca is a great logo, but that's because I think it's poorly designed, not because its "corporate".

Orca Bay was the Canucks parent company. It's business was operating the Canucks (and Grizzlies). Changing the logo of the Canucks to an Orca has absolutely nothing to do with "promoting Orca Bay", because Orca Bay's mandate was promoting the Canucks. This is chopping down trees to make axe-handles. If the Canucks were purchased by say Starbucks and changed their logo to a mermaid, there might be an argument there. But the "corporate orca" conspiracy theory makes as much sense as complaining about the team being named 'Canucks' because Orca Bay changed its name to 'Canucks Sports and Enterainment'

Calling it now, the Messier era Orca returns in 2034 as an alternate...  Two years later the #freewilly movement is started and the original Orca is regarded as the teams most iconic look.

Except it won’t be the original West Coast Express Orca. It will be a similar uniform with enough inexplicably small downgrades that the nostalgia appeal is ruined and it’s just an ugly new uniform that people use the 2034 slang equivalents of “‘fire, ‘clean AF’, GOATed’” etc  to describe why it’s actually the best uniform ever and they should have never went away from it.

I was a flying skate fan for the longest time, mostly because I associated it with 1994 as a Rangers fan, but more recently in the last year or so I've come around more on the current uniforms. I've come to realize that the skate jerseys were a mediocre logo paired with a mediocre color scheme, one that isn't all that unique (Calgary, one of Vancouver's biggest rivals, basically has that same color scheme, even though I'd like them to completely drop black).

Regarding the current jerseys, they're just about the best the Canucks have ever had, with a few changes I'd make:

    - Not sold on the orca. It's perfectly fine, but given its history, it still feels like something that was forced on the franchise by ownership. Ideally, I'd put the stick-in-rink on the jersey, but it's not a big deal.

    - Get rid of Agency font. It just doesn't look right on a jersey design that's about as traditional as it gets. I actually thought that the pants stripes somewhat balanced it out, but especially if you're just going to wear solid blue pants, drop that font and just wear regular block font

    - Bring back the pants stripes

(Yes, I know I'm essentially asking for these back. These are my favorite Canucks uniforms of all time.)

    spacer.png

But above all else, do not change the color scheme. It's far superior to any other in franchise history.

I would also contend that while not identical, the colour scheme is quite similar to Vegas and Anaheim, two other teams in the Pacific division.

The thing about the Skate is that I think people like the idea of it more than the actual reality of how it looks. If they went back to the Skate full time, it would get very old, very quickly, and people would quickly start demanding something else. The skate was not well loved in its tenure, and it was generally seen as a good thing when it went away. The exact same thing happened in the late 00s with the uniform you posted as is happening now with the skate, except I think social media amplifies the skate hype to a degree so a loud minority seems much more prevalent than it actually is.

Going back to it would throw out decades of brand equity from an organization that desperately needs it. Its like getting a barbed wire tattoo because 90s nostalgia is all the rage right now, so clearly it will always look cool.

If this is true, the NFL teams that have quickly moved on from a Nike-lead redesign are:

    • Buccaneers
    • Jaguars
    • Browns
    • Lions
    • Jets (rumored)
    • Titans (rumored, badly needed)

And my guess is the Falcons explore this for next offseason, while the Commanders under new ownership without question probably will).

If you're Nike, how are you not seen as an objective failure at this point? Everything you're cooking in the kitchen is getting sent back.

Overall its a net negative, but I don't think its been completely terrible. The Chargers look the best they ever have. The Vikings look great. The Bengals look great. The Lions, despite getting new uniforms actually look fine imo. The Pats and Falcons certainly aren't perfect but they're upgrades on the Reebok monstrosities they were wearing before.

Yeah I understand not liking the current Pats or Falcons uniforms, but the people here who were acting like they're this garish travesty compared to the Reebok sets before it with the random panels and piping to nowhere was the perfect indicator of how fickle this board can be.

If the Skate is going to be worn in the playoffs, it likely means a switch to it full-time is on the horizon 😑.  They finally got their uniforms right when they removed the arched wordmark and now they want to ditch, or at least minimize, one of the league's best colour schemes for something that looked dated in 1994...  This team is never going to have a proper identity.

I might just be done if they do that. I'm so sick of changing based on whatever direction the wind is blowing. Mickey Mouse operation for over 50 years.

Disappointing, but not surprising. It seems like the loudest portion of the fanbase has been calling for this lately. Just look at the responses to this Luongo tweet:

The guy actually makes some great points, many of which have been made on these boards already, yet the response from Canucks fans seems to boil down to, "shut up boomer".

The worst part is all the people clamouring for the skate are the same people who will be demanding something else 10 years down the road depending on whatever that flavour of the month is.

The Patriots uniforms, especially when wearing Navy over Grey, are infinitely better than what the Falcons are currently wearing.

If you're referring to the Brady era Patriots uniforms, they definitely weren't. Not only did they look worse, they looked way less "traditional" than the current Falcons uniforms, even with the abbreviated wordmark.

Disagree on all counts except for keeping the blue and green. Nothing wrong with having a secondary colour scheme for a 3rd.

For a special event night throwback sure. For a regular third it's questionable to have it as a complete departure.

    Quote

The reality is, is that the Canucks are a 2-colour scheme franchise, like it or not.

No they aren't. They've been a blue and green team. Before '90s nostalgia became the flavour of the month, the Skate colours were seen as an eyesore that they kept gradually toning down, and the only people who looked back favourably on them were boomers who were also wearing nostalgia goggles. Otherwise why not say they're a 3 colour scheme team and include the West Coast Express jerseys? Or hell, they've worn the Millionaires jerseys a few times, lets make it 4.

The only reason the Canucks have an "identity crisis" is because rather than sticking to the look they have now, which is great, they cater to the vocal minority demanding they bring back the skate because like their barbed wire tattoos and gauged ears, it will always be fashionable.

Really I'm quite surprised you didn't use this opportunity to batter Johnny Canuck's fossilized horse.

Agreed.  The Skate should be a special event jersey, worn a couple times a year, and not be a part of their main identity package.  Moving away from blue and green is where the Canuck's identity problems began and I don't want to see history repeat itself.  Their primary set looks great, especially now that the script is gone.  Also don't see any problem with the team owning the Agency font...  Enough teams use a Bloc already.

The Skate's appeal is nostalgia.  I agree with you in principal but if they're going to use the skate as a special event jersey, they should use one of the original throwbacks to capitalize on that.

The "updated" skate jersey is just bad. It's as if they took the original and decided to add as many downgrades as they could to get rid of the appeal of it being a throwback.

The sublimated 'V's on the arm don't look like 'V's at all. They just make it look incredibly cheap, like the stripes were put on with masking tape.

The complete absent of white as even the smallest trim makes it look dreary, rather than the striking like they original skate. The separation between the gold and red makes what is supposed to be the 'intimidating' (according to skate apologists) colour scheme look more muted. That, or they muted the shades they use, in which case that's another 'L'.  I haven't looked into which it is but either way, it doesn't look good.

The new matte helmets add another layer of looking cheap, like a kid took a can of spray paint to his helmet in his garage, or you bought a hockey player toy set for your toddler at the dollar store which included a cheap plastic helmet essentially as a costume.

As for the number font, ignoring the bush league move of not having them match across the uniform, while I'm not really a fan of the agency font, I think its okay on the home and away. I just wish they would use a thicker version, like the one used on the retired number banners. However, it looks awful on the new skate thirds. The thin, modern font in yellow with red trim and zero white evokes the feeling of a neon sign outside of a dive bar or strip club.

The whole uniform just looks dingy, I think that's the best way to describe it. Its like they tried to infuse the 'dive bar' or 'grimy hot dog stand' aesthetic into a hockey uniform.

I will say I like the hanger effect of the North Shore mountains on the collar, but that's about all the praise I have for it.
