I would disagree. Flags aren't corporate or sports logos. They don't necessarily have to be clean or simply designed. They should reflect the heritage of the nation, and sometimes that means a complicated design that employs heraldry. There was a BBC quote about flags around the time of the failed New Zealand flag referendum. I'm paraphrasing, but a flag is like a family member. You don't try to trade an unattractive one for an attractive one, because aesthetics isn't the key issue here. Who they are is.

True, flags aren't corporate or sports logos, but in a way they are a brand, or at least a part of the brand that is the country and its people so that's why I believe a good flag should keep things simple, while not being way too simple that it straddles the line of being forgetful. The Croats have a signature in the red and white checkerboard, and it's been that way since the middle ages. That's a hell of a lot of heritage and history to work with when designing a flag; it should've been enough to keep things simple and also to create a kickass flag.

The way I look at the shield crown is that it's just a lazy way to symbolize the country's unity after the war and I don't know if that's worth sacrificing some of the flag's legibility, memorability and reproductive capabilities.

  2. Thanks for the mention @ec5 :)) I think you hit the nail on the head in regards of my opinion. I too, like @dado, struggle with loving our flag completely. Multiple coats of arms always bugged me. I get they were trying to unite the different regions and represent them, but in the end they've produced an overly complicated flag which definitely breaks some general rules of good flag design. Personally, I'd get rid of the regional shields completely, the checker is a strong enough symbol to stand on it's own and represent the people and the country competently.

What I like about your design is that you've toned down the saturation of the colors, it's a welcomed change 'cause the digital flag is just too much for the eyes.

Overall, it's a cool rendition of Croatia's flag, you've done a good job with it; its fun seeing Zagreb in red again. :))

And as far as my favorite proposal for our flag, it's gotta be this one. The ratios could use work, but its pleasing to look at.

No, they make nutritional supplements and fitness equipment. You could have found that out with in 5 seconds if you bothered to google it.

It's a joke my guy...no need for frustration.

It's easy to make Rogan the butt of many jokes, so it would be a borderline sin to not do it.

  4. Hey, I thought you guys might be able to help me out by recognizing the brush script font that's being used in this logo, I cannot seem to find it anywhere:

Now up to 29/36. Also, if you want to add a text description, send it ASAP.

I will try to post these and get voting started but I need everyone to turn it in! Haven't heard from Brave-Bird, Clement, chapper, or OliverP.

Hopefully I can finish mine today and send it in to you.

  6. Kickstarting this OLD thread of mine, hope it's ok with the mods.

I've posted a new redesign on Dribbble (And here's the Dribbble link https://dribbble.com/shots/4662225-Radio-101) and wanted to share it with the boards. It's really a clean-up of the classic Radio 101's logo. The radio station has been around since 1984 and it was always known as the urban, different, freethinking and a no BS kind of station. They're the first radio station in Croatia to have dedicated shows that played hard rock, heavy metal, and alternative music so their logo has become a sort of symbol for the non-mainstream alternative youth. The old logo needed some work, it's a bit too grungy for my taste. Here's the old one:

    And here's the clean-up:

If you're a fan of flags and geography in general, I can't recommend the Youtube channel GeographyNow! enough.  His down-to-earth descriptions of the geography and culture of countries are extremely accessible, and every Friday is a combo of fan letters and discussion about a recently-covered country's flag.

    I second this opinion.

Oh God, I thought you were joking about Split's flag.

That might be worse than the infamous Pocatello flag.

At least it doesn't have a trademark symbol on it...I guess that's a positive.

  9. Hey guys, I just rummaged through the database of Croatian city flags and just wanted to show you the uncovered gems I've found under a mountain of SOB flags (seal on a bedsheet flags).

    1. Varaždin (currently in use):

    2. Pula (currently in use):

    3. Čakovec (was used from '93 to '94, It's a shame 'cause it was replaced by an SOB flag):

Bonus! It's not a city flag but the flag of the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering in Zagreb:

But now this, this is something every citizen of Split should be ashamed of:

    This is 100% real.

And yes, that is a gradient...

  10. Hey guys, I saw a page on Facebook (''professional photographer'') using this logo and I swear I remember it from somewhere else, it can't be their logo. I couldn't find the original creator, maybe you guys know where it's from.
