This is a terribly underappreciated sweater:

It should’ve been a lasting classic and not a one-hit wonder.

The only weakness of that jersey was the omission of the original skating penguin logo, it would have been a perfect fit on the right shoulder area.

Y'know, reading your comment got me thinking... if the Hurricanes did move to Houston, would anyone object to them retaking the Whalers identity? Like you said, it seems to be better regarded than the Hurricanes' is, and the old hidden-H logo would still work for Houston. As someone who wants to see the Whalers come back even I'll admit Hartford isn't likely to ever get an NHL team again, so I'd think "Houston Whalers" would be the next-best thing.

Don't see any chance Houston would try the nickname "Whalers", even if Aeros isn't available. The Whalers had WHA success, but struggled in the NHL, it's not a strong brand. Better for Hartford to use the name down the line.

Franco with Seattle, Makes me cringe

At least the fading Harris didn't face the Steelers during his brief time in Seattle. Such was not the case in 1989, when Mike Webster played at Pittsburgh as a member of the Chiefs. Webster had retired as a Steeler, and was going to work as an assistant with KC, when the Chiefs had some injuries at the center position, and asked him to come out of retirement.

  4. Here's a right team, wrong uniform that surprised me. Ken Riley is one of the earliest examples of my uniform nerdery. I remembered seeing pictures of him in the old Bengals uniforms from the 1970s and actually made it a point to look up his name and number in an old Packers yearbook (they had the rosters of all the Packers' opponents) at the library because I thought it was so odd that a DB wore number 13.

And yet, I never knew he ever wore the tiger stripes until a few moments ago.

Ken Riley is one of those underrated players who deserves HOF consideration, along with Denver LB Randy Gradishar. Riley spent three seasons in that uniform, picking off eight passes in his final season(1983).

  5. Gray facemasks suck. That's a popular opinion.

The NFL needs a team whose primary/home jersey is yellow.

while I don't disagree with the sentiment, who would it be? An expansion team? Or an existing team that has a form of yellow/gold in their color template like the Chargers, Chiefs, Steelers, Packers, or Redskins? I cant think of one of them looking good in that.

I think they would look good in a yellow jersey.

Also, I agree with your Mr. Nascar, Pittsburgh should bring back the old alts.

Evil G, I'm going to suggest something which would be unpopular, especially for Steelers fans. I would build an alternate uniform around your avatar, the circa 1960s Steelworker logo, which is underrated to me. Black helmet with that yellow logo, and yellow facemask. Black jersey, featuring three large diamond shapes from the modern logo on each shoulder, rotated. The player number would be where the diamond logos meet. Black jersey with a steel bar shown in the steelworker logo on each pant leg. The steel bar would take up most, but not all, the pant leg. I realize this design and idea would be unpopular, but there you have it.

Oops, meant to say Black pants, not Black jersey, when describing the steel bar.

  6. Photo of George Hendrick during his 69 game stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1985:

That photo of Hendrick always cracks me up, especially when I see him coaching the Rays on TV. His players are too young or weren't born to remember, but Hendrick basically tanked his only season with the Bucs. He wasn't happy about being traded to Pittsburgh, so Hendrick loafed whenever possible, but still collected his paycheck. The term "Jogging" George Hendrick was coined to describe his lack of effort at the plate and in the field. Talk about letting down your teammates! If you or I had pulled that stunt at a new company we would have been fired quickly. The Pirates had bad teams in the mid 80s before the revival later in the decade, but that was no excuse for the unprofessional conduct by Hendrick that year.
