    The what now?

In the late 90’s OSU built a new pro-style basketball and hockey arena while the city/Blue Jackets built Nationwide Arena. They’re not literally on the same street. One is downtown, the other is on OSU’s campus. The problem it caused was two arenas competing for concerts and other events.

The whole two-arenas-on-the-same-street thing did give them a bit of a scare, though, didn't it? Like, if they hadn't come up with a single body to manage both buildings and keep them from cannibalizing the market, wouldn't they have been in some danger?

The only scare according to my contact with the team was that the original lease agreement made it impossible to compete without losing piles of money (they were also GMed by a moron who made it impossible to compete by doing things like ignoring his scouts' advice and drafting Gilbert Brule instead of Anze Kopitar) That had nothing to do with the market or fanbase, was just a poorly designed agreement structure. Restructuring the lease agreement in 2011 brought them more in line with the rest of the league in terms of operating expenses. They used some standard "we would hate to have to move" tactics to get a new deal done, but it was never seriously considered.

This connects back to OSU and the reason an outdoor game at Ohio Stadium hasn't been entertained until this year - Ohio State is a famously terrible partner to work with in Central Ohio. They don't give a honk about the rest of Columbus unless it has something to do with Ohio State. I very much doubt they would've cooperated on an arena in the late 90's if the hockey team had been amenable to it anyway.

So, in conclusion, Columbus is fine.

That's great to hear. Honestly it's pretty impressive that the crowds are that good for a team that's pretty much had no chance at a championship.

If Josh Anderson doesn't get hurt against Boston the Blues might not have a cup and you'd have a different username. That team had more than a good chance at a championship.

I will say this though... I'm pretty much an all around sports fan. I watch most major sports, golf, etc. The Jackets are super forgettable from an outsiders perspective.  That probably mostly has to do with the fact that they haven't been relevant in the standings. I think it also stems from a pretty strange identity with the neon hornet, to the cannon, etc. For a non Columbusian, there is almost no reason to follow them since they aren't a good hockey team and I don't find their visual identity appealing. Plus I follow the Blues, so I watch a lot more Western Conference teams.

But this post isn't meant to dog the franchise, just FYI. I'm glad that Columbus is supportive of them. And the posts you gave have written make me think a Blues road game in Columbus would be cool.

Fair and I don't disagree. If I could time travel back to 1997 and name them anything other than Blue Jackets I would. Too late now.

But that's a different topic than "Nobody cares about them, they shouldn't even get the B version of the outdoor game, and I'm surprised they haven't relocated".

No one cares about the Blue Jackets. Why is it in Columbus?

You don't have to be this guy. Lots of people care about the Blue Jackets. It's in Columbus because they haven't participated in an outdoor game yet and there's a famous outdoor sports venue in the city that would've been used years ago, but the outgoing OSU athletic director was a stubborn wrench that prevented any discussions with the NHL and Ohio State. He's finally retiring and getting out of the way, which is why it's now happening in Columbus.

They do. Currently averaging >93% capacity with a reliable season ticket base to watch a team who's going to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

We have some drama brewing between FC Cincinnati, independent reporter Laurel Pfahler and FCC fans. Laurel is one of two local independent reporters who cover the team. She is one of the best in the industry.

Last week FC Cincinnati temporarily revoked Laurels press credentials for two weeks. Since then fans have been spamming FC Cincinnatis social media with the hashtag #FreeLaurel.  Many fans believe she has done nothing wrong. For days it had been nothing but silence regarding the matter from FCC, but as people kept spamming FreeLaurel, they finally released a statement just hours before tonights CONCACAF match at Monterrey.

    The statement from FC Cincinnati:

To our fans who have inquired about the status of media credentials for Queen City Press:

In seven years over thousands of stories, FC Cincinnati has never rescinded a reporter’s credentials. Reporters are invited into FC Cincinnati’s Mercy Health Training Center and TQL Stadium – our workspaces – consistent with a tradition of integrity and trust between sports organizations and the media. Since its founding in 2015, FC Cincinnati has supported local journalism and coverage from its hometown newspapers, television and radio stations, and news media bloggers alike. We have no issue with critical yet professional coverage of the team, as it is the passion of fans for a successful team that drives the intensity of our support while we aim to proudly represent our community.

We had no intention of making this story public. However, since Laurel Pfahler has driven public attention to the matter, we have no choice but to provide answers to the many questions our fans are asking. Laurel has failed to act in accordance with the standards and practices of the Society of Professional Journalists and the MLS Notice of Credentials Use Conditions. She refuses to accept responsibility for her actions, despite multiple conversations and attempts at working together to forge a productive relationship between her and the club. Out of professional decorum, we will not be sharing the details publicly.

The decision to temporarily rescind her media credentials is meant to serve as an opportunity to reflect and rebuild based on trust, transparency and an adherence to a common set of standards and ethics associated with her role as a journalist. In the spirit of “All for Cincy,” we hope to move forward in a positive manner soon.

    Laurels Response to the statement:

    GIq0Xy8WEAA0FcN?format=jpg&name=large

So basically they suspended an independent journalist for.....reporting.  She is INDEPENDENT. She does not work for the team. As far as Im concerned, being independent, you can source from whoever you want. Since she doesnt actually work for the team, she shouldnt have to use the club, or anyone approved by the club or MLS to source her material. FCC fans are pissed they are treating her this way.

What was the initial incident that caused them to pull her credential? I can't actually find the inciting issue and can only find the after-the-fact back and forth.

  6. Saw DC United and FC Cincinnati kick it around yesterday. My thoughts:

    1. Cold. 40 degrees in March is colder than a 20 degree Bengals game in January. I don't know why.

    2. FCC has to work so much harder than they did last year. They miss Vazquez.

    3. My first time seeing D.C. United since going to this game as an 8 year old in the first season of MLS. That game was in a mostly empty Ohio Stadium. Yesterday's was in a filled soccer specific stadium. We've come a long way.

This is the RBK Edge "We can't put straight stripes on jersey sleeves anymore, it's detrimental to performance" lie all over again, except this time every team in the league bit on it.

Good point. That's what this reminds me of. Templated changes designed to reduce drag across teams in terms of manufacturing are framed as "Innovation".

You guys talked about this BS yet? First of all, the headspoon piping looks like it's off a bootleg that got the proportions incorrect, but the biggest issue here is the piping on the sleeves is no longer piping, as in another layer of fabric sewn on top of the sleeve. Instead it's a cuff with a stripe that's supposed to approximate piping and it's thicker than the headspoon piping. Don't like it!

The Reds themselves have a history of striped cuffs, but that was a deliberate choice with their pullover unis from 72-92, but this is the work of the current template cutting corners. Are the other teams with sleeve/headspoon piping doing the same thing?

As a fellow CCSLC Oldhead, I found myself thinking about the old megathread on calling out counterfeits, which took off as they began flooding eBay and swap meets. There was a lot of back-and-forth, heated at times, between the "It's cheap and close enough" crowd and the majority opinion at the time, which was that these were sweatshop-made crap that would fall apart in the wash, accompanied by the ethical concerns over IP theft and undermining the legit work of fellow designers.

    Seems quaint now, doesn't it?

I had a brief, perhaps delusional, moment of optimism this morning when I first saw Chris' post. Sure, these new "limited" jerseys were $175, but we were finally getting MLB replica jerseys with sleeve patches and front numbers after more than three decades, even if they were screened twill. Then I got to see a photo of the actual product and was quicky reminded how Nike and Fanatics have engineered screen twill down to the thickness and durability of the vinyl film that gets heat-pressed on at your local t-shirt shop, and apparently have found some new corners to cut. At this point, why wouldn't you roll the dice on a $30-50 knockoff instead?

It's sad because buying an authentic was worth the money at one point. It was sturdy materials and it felt good. Now the authentics, what the players are going to wear this season, look like the knockoffs! I think people should buy from dhgate! If I wasn't already pretty much done with collecting jerseys then Fanatics has made that decision for me.

I'm not the only person to make this observation, but there's this growing feeling right now that every product in practically every industry feels worse than it used to and it's because of guys like Rubin.

Last season, I loved the Mariners' City Connect wordmark, and wanted a shirt. Unfortunately, that meant a $40 Fanatics shirt, and I've learned the hard way what that gets me. So instead, I got a $16 heathered royal blue shirt with the old Pilots road wordmark on TeePublic. I kept $24 in my pocket, MLB and Fanatics didn't get any of my money in theirs, and I have a shirt I can still wear after more than three washes.

Eventually, more consumers may make decisions similar to mine, to a point where it may make a tangible impact to Fanatics' bottom line. But everyone making these shortsighted decisions now will have cashed out by then.

I've told my fanatics story, but I'll tell it again. I bought a Reds hoodie with the Mr Redlegs logo on it so I could wear it to opening day. That was a month before the game so I figured I was safe. Opening Day came and went without my fanatics order arriving for the game and when it finally did show up that Reds hoodie quickly became a red hoodie because the graphic completely disintegrated off of it after a couple of washes. I guess I should just be grateful it showed up at all and that the logo was oriented correctly while it was on the garment.

I'll never buy from them again after that and I hope more people follow so their only choices are get better or get replaced by another supplier. Until their crappy monopoly of sports is broken, I'm only buying from Homage, Ebay vintage pieces, and fan made unlicensed gear.

  10. We all knew about Fanatics' humorously bad issues with quality in outfitting us grimy fans. They cornered the market so why would they care about the quality of our gear when our only other option for teamwear is "Don't Buy It"? What's baffling to me here is the actual quality of the ON-FIELD product is now suffering because of this cheap ass company. I never thought they'd have so little pride in their work that the quality issues would flow up.

  11. The Chiefs have that thing that the Patriots had in the latter Brady years where they're obviously good, but teams also seem to self-immolate against them in playoff games. It's like they think they have to play perfectly to beat KC and in doing so hand them assists all over the place. They could've easily had losses in all of this Super Bowl, last year's Super Bowl, this year's Ravens game, this year's Bills game, the AFC Championship last year against the Bengals, the 13 seconds game against Buffalo, etc. Time after time an opponent short circuits and muffs a punt or donates a defensive TD like Hurts did a year ago. The last time a team didn't give them any wiggle room was the Bengals in 2021 and the Chiefs haven't lost a playoff game since.

You do have to hand it to them.

I have ventured from Cincy to Columbus only three times for hockey and only two times was it for a Blue Jackets game. The other was a game involving the farm teams at that time, Syracuse Crunch (CBS) vs Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (ANA/DET)

I've done it probably 50 times, but my parents are there and I'm weird. For a normal person, I don't think the Columbus Blue Jackets have taken in Cincinnati as well as the NHL might've hoped in 1997, but large nearby population centers to draw from was the pitch when they were selling Columbus as an expansion market in the mid 90's. I remember when I first moved back here in 2012 there were three instances where I informed a Cincinnati resident that Columbus had a team in the NHL and they were blown away. That's how anonymous the Blue Jackets were. That's also Cincinnati, though, where many people here are deliberately uninterested in anything that happens outside of 275. Cleveland seems to be more into the Blue Jackets, but that's probably because they've had the CBJ AHL farm team for at least a decade now.

Hockey has always been low man on the totem pole here in Cincy. Reds, Bengals, FCC up top, college football and basketball in the middle, and hockey at the bottom. I honestly believe that people here would rather see the NBA return with the Royals than get an NHL team.

You're right. If you plopped a new arena on the river tomorrow I think most people here would ask for an NBA team first. I also think the NBA would make more sense. Indy is only 100 minutes away, but I can count on one hand the number of people I've met here who are diehard Pacers fans.

The Coliseum has its own charm. I dont know any other venue that doesnt serve Coca Cola or Pepsi products (they serve products of Dr Pepper Keurig- RC Cola, Diet Rite, Sunkist, Big Red, Dr Pepper, 7 Up, Sun Drop), but its no old fashioned barn by any means. Now the Cincinnati Gardens, that was an old fashioned barn. I swear in 2004 i could still smell stale popcorn and beer from 1972 in there. Was sad to lose that arena.

I played in the Gardens multiple times, but never saw a game from the stands. It did feel like going back in time. What I like about the Coliseum is it's like a mini-Joe Louis or a mini-Nassau. They don't make them like that anymore either.

I remember local hero @Sport pointing out that the Cincinnati and Dayton metros have basically merged into one agglomeration.  Not a lot of separation between Cincinnayton and Columbus, which itself keeps sprawling. None at all, really.

I've always said Cincinnati just intuitively feels like an NHL town more than Columbus does, and would have had the benefit of not having a big-time college arena down the street from its own, but there's no way you can have both towns in the league at the same time.

    On 2/3/2024 at 3:12 PM, The_Admiral said:

Yeah, I'm sure there's a similar one-way flow with Cleveland and Akron. I wouldn't put an NHL team there, either. Columbus really precludes both, which I'm sure was indirectly part of the idea: neither market can 100%-for-sure sustain a team, but be Ohio's Team and pull secondary support from both. Honestly would have been smooth sailing had Ohio State not built an identical arena down the street.

That was the pitch of Columbus back in 97. Growing city in an open spot on the map without a major pro team* and they could draw from nearby cities, including the other C's, without much trouble. Cincinnati and Cleveland were overextended with their sports then and still are now and Cincinnati has added an MLS team in that time without adding that many more people. I think time has proven Columbus to be a good idea for an NHL market. In spite of never really being a cup threat, and then some now-sorted issues with the arena, the market has grown up with the franchise and attendance is relatively stable to good. It's been nearly a decade since I worried about relocation. Part of the reason Columbus doesn't feel like a place people are from is because we never had a major Columbus team to take pride in. The Crew are changing that, but if the Blue Jackets ever put together a consistent champion and contender then it'll blow that up. We're going to be as annoying as Ohio State football fans. Beware.

I got a few texts asking me what I would do if we got an NHL team here in Cincinnati. As a day one CBJ fan** I don't think I could bail, but I'm not not rooting for Cincy to get a team - I just don't think it makes any sense. But I also don't have to make that choice because it's not happening. I know a fluff job when I see one and Gary and Bill were just trying to pad their list of potential cities so they'd sound more impressive. I'm sure Gary Bettman did have a phone call with a Lindner kid, but we don't have an arena***, we're too close to Columbus, and we're already strapped with NFL, MLB, MLS, and college sports.

If I was King of Hockey I'd move the Coyotes somewhere else and keep it at 32. I know expansion fees are tempting, but 32 is the perfect number for a North American sports league and they have pretty much every hole plugged. Any more than 32 feels like asking for trouble.

*ignoring that OSU sports sucks more oxygen out of the room than most major pro sports franchises.

**literally day one. My 13 year old behind was in section 211 on October 7, 2000.

***I went to a Cyclones game a couple weeks ago. That arena is fun in that you can still experience an old-fashioned BARN in 2024 without any extravagances of modern indoor stadia. I almost hope it's never replaced.

really cool how a bunch of people who probably still pull the "OH IS THERE A SPORTSBALL ON" card like clockwork each February have decided that if you don't unconditionally support Billionaire's Boyfriend's Team then you're a conspiracy-poisoned whackjob. no, jerkoff, I just want a different goddamn team to win the AFC for once.

That's really only happening if you choose to make it happen. In the real world nobody cares  if you pull for the 49ers, which I am so they can tie the Steelers at six Super Bowls. The online poisoned whackjob faction you speak of is unimportant. Their opinions don't matter and I'm not gonna spend another second worrying about what kind of person rooting for the 49ers makes me with regards to Taylor Swift because it also doesn't matter.

Also I don't like the idea of this Chiefs team winning back-to-back Super Bowls in two seasons where they weren't really all that great in either year. They remind me of the 16 and 17 Penguins who were a good team, but only won back-to-back titles because they got really good at gaming the system to their benefit.

  18. Nightmare wildcard weekend for the Browns? They get obliterated by the team they traded a haul of picks to for the Walking Pornhub Clip and then watch the QB they dumped win a playoff game with another team. Only way that could’ve gone worse is if the Steelers won.

And I’m really glad the Steelers didn’t win. To call them frauds would be inaccurate - Occasionally frauds look good and trick people into thinking they’re good. Not once this season did they look good. Only in the playoffs due to a Steelerian lucky run of seeing backup QBs on the schedule. It’s a lot harder when you have to play an actual starter, eh?

  19. America's Team in that America loves to watch them lose playoff games. It's my favorite annual tradition.
