  1. Modernizing this logo would've been much better than what they went with.. Their new logo looks like a cheap 80's cartoon.. It has no character and doesn't feel like much of a logo.. As bad as the rendering of this older is, it's at least unique and recognizable.. I feel like @ren69 could do some magic with it, and make it a great mark
  2. The other teams you mentioned use a standard block (More football-y and serified), but with teams like the Royal, Shi who seem to have the thicker variant, I believe they use the background/outline layer (or the version intended for use with kiss-cut outlines).. The inner angles make it a bit too busy/rounded for football (along with the thinness), but I still love the font (15 especially)..
  3. To me, it's the perfect baseball font, and if it were a teeny bit bolder, it would be a near-perfect font for most anything.. I wore #15 in high school, and I LOVED the way the 1 and the 5 looked in this font.. Probably has something to do with why the Texans' font is my favorite athletic number font..
  4. i don't disagree with those specific points, as the nickname "tigers" is overly generic (although i've seen it argued on these boards that the more general nicknames like Tigers are more "professional" sounding than nicknames like Bengals - but that's a different discussion) and those teams having great history - but other nicknames like "Falcons" and "Panthers" are similarly generic, but have built strong brand identities as well - and with much less history.. i think you can go slightly less generic without selling out into the campy, local side of things.. again, i think the local identity concept is one that's tough to pull off without feeling forced, and i also think you can easily paint yourself into a corner where folks feel like you chose the wrong local thing to build an identity around, or you lose the ability to play off of multiple different local things... for example: the Miami Heat's "Miami Vice" uniforms - great and interesting one-off uniform set that plays into the colors and art deco style associated with Miami, as well as the iconic television show, etc.. but by having a general nickname like "Heat", they're able to pull off such things.. then looking at their crosstown baseball counterparts - i feel like the Marlins went all-in on the art deco theme way too much, resulting in a diluted, cheap-looking brand, with random additional colors and an awkward logo (i know some folks here love it, but i hate it).. so i feel like it's just as divisive (if not more so) to sell out on local themes than to go a bit more generic with some loose local ties that make enough sense to not be questioned, but aren't overly-specific..
  5. Disagree completely, there are no Tigers in Detroit, Bears in Chicago, Rams in LA, Pirates in Pittsburgh, etc.. a great brand is a great brand, regardless of local ties.. sure, it can certainly work, but often feels too forced and cheesy.. Especially more modern examples.. maybe i feel better about some of the older ones because i'm more used to them, but either way, i don't think it's a critical part to building a strong identity/brand.. in fact, i'd say it's often more of a hindrance.. also, some might argue that the Lakers' brand is one of the strongest in all of pro sports - and it fits your "absurd" definition.. so, even then i don't mind it, because it still contributes to the team's identity by linking it to its past.. at the end of the day, i think if a brand is executed well with colors/logos/uniforms, and has some success, it'll gain fan support and be a strong identity.. i don't necessarily think regional character plays a significant role in that..
  6. Nah, it's a pretty standard way to phrase that sort of thing..
  7. I hate Marlin Blue.. They should be teal
  8. Thick compared to the standard piping they went to
  9. I don't disagree with you often, but this is one of those times.. The thick black/white racing stripes on the Sox roads were FANTASTIC and it's a travesty that they dropped them (Along with the sock patch)
  10. Can we just take a moment to appreciate how good the Bolts look in this photo?
  11. Obviously silver would be worse, since the helmets are Metallic Texas Blue.. So Metallic Texas Blue (which seams to be what is used here) would be better..
  12. I agree completely.. The thin gold outline is completely unnecessary, but having the white and black outlines really improve the look.. Filling in the gold outline space with extra white would be my ideal solution.. I agree 100% with loving their font and sleeve numbers, but yeah, the serif on the 6 & 9 nearly connects with the rest of the number and can look more like an 8 from distance.. That's a very easy fix though, and doesn't affect my opinion of the font itself, but rather my opinion of the Phillies for not correcting it
  13. In the navy/yellow version, I might agree.. But in the original royal/yellow version, it looks better with the white web imo.. Kinda balances the logo better, with the white in the ball.. I think the navy details wash out the white web too much and cause it to blend with the yellow outline a bit, but the brightness of the original colors allow it to stand on its own a bit more.. At least to my eyes
  14. I REALLY like the Texas Rangers cap logo.. ESPECIALLY with the drop shadow
  15. If we're counting all the space below the actual stripes as a stripe, why not count all the space above them as well? Plus, an argument could be made that it would make more sense to shift your stripe numbers up, so they begin and end with red (like the actual flag they're meant to mimic)
  16. Several of those examples are attempts to replicate a timeless American look (Giants, Dodgers, Yankees in the first 3), so while I don't agree with the practice, I at least understand what they were trying to do, so I'll give them a small pass.. Also, the issues with the W don't show any weakness with the drop shadow whatsoever.. They show weakness in poor craftsmanship, which is what caused this.. That could just as easily be a solid yellow outline, and if rendered the same way, would look equally ridiculous.. They could easily throw some Velcro there and fix the issue as well, or preferably, have the jerseys produced properly to begin with..
  17. The "hidden" MB isn't very hidden, so while it's a cute/clever logo, it has no real staying power for me.. I don't mind it as a secondary or tertiary in the package, but it's a poor use of a "monogram" (as its better suited for a place like Myrtle Beach, where the city/location name is "M.B.").. The current logo, imo, blows it out of the water.. As for the jersey issues: -yes, a new similar-but-unique (and more sports-appropriate font for the numbers would do wonders -the drop tail on Milwaukee looks fine, it's only goofy on the Brewers wordmark, and even then, it doesn't need to extend all the way, just a bit further.. -the weird blob behind the W isn't a design flaw, it's a production flaw.. There's no need for it to be produced like that.. A normal gold shadow would be fine.. It's a lazy shortcut made because that area isn't supposed to be seen (although it is often seen, hence this discussion). And the current M, while limited to the "script" (or cursive) family of wordmarks, is nondescript enough that there are certainly other fonts/configurations it would pair nicely with. While I agree that a lot of the "gold" used recently by the club is a bit drab, if they would combine the metallic look of the vegas gold with the brightness of the yellow to get more of a metallic yellow that catches the sunlight and gives off more of a beer/wheat vibe, it'd be perfect.. So, while I respect your opinion, I maintain that they're only a few small tweaks away from a great set that perfectly embodies their nickname and identity..
  18. The current logo might seem a bit dated because some of its elements were fads of the early 2000's, but a league full of logos that omit every "dated" design element would be extremely boring.. A logo can have a drop shadow without being a bad logo.. The beer-script styled M with wheat underline fits the brewers nickname and identity very well imo.. In fact, I think it's vastly superior to the BiG logo, which is only popular for nostalgic reasons.. Their current identity isn't executed perfectly, but it's a few tweaks away from being great
  19. I may be missing something, but those Capitals jerseys only have 12 stripes..
  20. I agree as well and have been preaching it for years, but it actually started pre-nike.. The late Reebok versions were the same way, but somehow didn't look quite as bad.. Either way, the shoulder stripes should be only 2 stripes, but if they're going to go with the standard 3-stripe look, the outer stripes should be the jersey body color, with the center stripe being the sleeve color
  21. It's closer to either of the slurs than "Nappy", imo.. Another reach.. But, as I've stated, I think it's a ridiculous name anyway, so if you feel like that lends justification to opposing the name, more power to ya.
  22. Your #3 is a bit of a reach.. Also, it's a consonant away from the racial "slur" (although more of an abbreviation than a slur.. Kinda like how "Naps" is short for a longer word).. I don't think anyone would ever mistake them for being anything other than the Naps.. Although, I agree it's a terrible name for several other reasons
  23. Not a fan of them being called "Kits".. It's a uniform in every other sport, even sports that require similar attire
  24. I don't love the Rays' green and light blue look (nor do I care much for that color scheme in general) .. Yeah, I said it
  25. If nothing else, it's at least present in the helmet wings and sleeve logos.. With the amount of white and black they use, I think the silver and charcoal grey both get lost.. A nice medium-light grey would eliminate an unnecessary color from their palette and be more distinctive on their uniforms, as well as visually tie more closely to the silver of the past
