Not to tangent, but the way FIFA is going with the World Cup, it's going to be about every 20 years or so North America will get the games again. They're to the point even Europe and the Americas are having multi-country hosts. It's going to start rotating between The Americas, Europe, Asia/Oceania, and back with consistency since they're not going to keep finding the Qatars, South Africas, or Brazils of the world going into nation-changing debt to build the stadiums for one event and then sit vacant and dilapidated in short order.

The NFL already got rid of that rule. They don't bid out hosting anymore. They just pick where they want.

Allegiant Stadium only held 61k for the Super Bowl.

Also the field was 80 yards long so they kept 'moving the chains' back 20 yards after a team reach midfield to make them go the additional 20 they were missing. Prior to this game, the ball was spotted where a player went down at. If they went out at the sideline, the ball was put in play along the sideline. The narrow field meant teams could 'move the ball away from the wall' at Chicago Stadium (they also gave up a down to do this). The next year the NFL codified it as the rule, and the ball could only be spotted inside the hashmarks. No matter how far wide a player was tackled.

Southwest Kansas is reportedly looking for host families for their players. 

That's not uncommon with minor league teams. Saves them a lot and costs them just two season tickets usually.

Look, I'm hoping the league makes it. I was a fan of the previous XFLs and the USFLs (especially the 1980s version), and the AAF and whatever else you want. But I can't ignore a dropoff like that.

Cardinals were playing a home game that afternoon. 41k there. 31k at the BattleHawks game. 

And technically you could have left the 1130am BattleHawks game and gotten into the Cards game about halfway through from their 130pm first pitch. But it was also free full zip jacket day at Busch for the first 25k fans.

St. Louis had a reason their fan support was so high. Same as Baltimore in the CFL USA debacle. Ufl/xfl/USFL should've done everything they could to get teams in Oaklandand San Diego and played into the same anti-nfl sentient that has presented itself in St. Louis.

Oilers to Titans. They had already moved and just then wanted a new identity to start fresh. Coyotes and Cardinals changed from Phoenix to Arizona for marketing purposes. Though that wasn't nicknames. 

California Angels to Anaheim Angels to Los Angeles Angels didn't change nicknames but certainly changed their names just because they felt like it. 

Never heard the mountains near slc called the rockies. They're the Wasatch Mountains. They might be part of the overarching chain of mountains through the continent but they're never referred to as such.

At least they have a logo ready to go.

People in charge way overthink things. It makes them feel important and project that out.

They can create an color scheme, and identity, in a couple months. They can get their supplier to hold off creating their equipment and merch until they're ready for it. They can change their name, colors, or logos in a couple years if they flubbed it. They're not going to hit it out of the park no matter how much time they're given when they rely on dozens of 'focus groups' and 'fan surveys' to come up with the worst answer.

What do you want to eat tonight? Pizza. Chinese. Italian. Hamburgers.

Cool, let's go with tomato sauce, pickles, onion, ketchup, mustard, pepperoni, on fried rice with breadsticks.

Everyone gets what they wanted.

Your 2022-23 USHL Champion Youngstown Phantoms have purple/orange combo (and usually predominately white or black uniforms) but this is their purple with the secondary logo. It's a pretty sharp look. Orange could be more prominent.

For now, yes.  There's a reason that Mark Cuban sold a majority ownership of the Mavericks to the people who own the Sands Casino, with him retaining a minority share and control of basketball operations.  Cuban hopes that the sale will speed up the legalization of Casino Gambling in Texas so that he can build a new arena that is the centerpiece of a hotel and casino in the DFW Metroplex.  

 

But for the time being, I suspect that the Dallas PVF team will not use the American Airlines Center.

• Herd (A low-key solid name, but I don't think it has the oomph to wow anyone, Ya Heard With Perd)

• Pioneers (This is a good one. Has a lot of options. But if Seattle and Vegas are any indications on direction of team names... it's not going to be a folksy name. Shame because it works well)

• Railroaders (Love this name. Golden Spikes, Golden Spikers, Spikers, etc all tied into the transcontinental railroad being finished. Railers also works; There's a high school in Kansas called the Ellis Railroaders and they regularly shorten it to just "Railers" as a nickname to a nickname)

• Wagoners (Goes with Pioneers. Similar theme and good name. I like it. But not edgy/modern at all so think it'll fail to deliver)

• Blizzards (think ice lizards)  (I liked Blizzard in general. Not sure if pluralization works. but it's not bad. I think there's more that can be done with the "Blizzard" name compared to Blizzards. If they go the Yeti/Abominable route, Blizzard would maybe make more sense the same way Avalanche went with the big foot logo for a general 'Avalanche' nickname)

• Sundancers (I like it. Feels more of a New Mexico "Zia Sun" motif than something for Utah. But props for originality. But you know within two months everyone will be calling them the Dancers. Some focus group somewhere will kibosh that one just for that)

I just really really really hope they don't go with some minor-league style pun/kid-friendly name that will be embarrassing just a few seasons in. Such as anything ending in Z or X. Nothing that's a cultural cliche like Raptors were with Toronto. And avoid the 'say nothing while trying to appeal to everyone' like the Wild and Blue Jackets did.

Also caught a little bit of Grand Rapids Rise/Vegas Thrill, and wow does Rise sound awkward as hell as a team name, even compared to the other singular names in the league.

It only works with "Grand Rapids" in front of it. By itself, it just feels weird. Even "The Rise" doesn't help. At least "The Vibe", "The Fury", "The Thrill", "The Mojo", seems to work on its own.

I have a feeling they're going collective noun. If so, Swarm works very well for the beehive state. I'd expect black/yellow colors then, which would suck. But maybe instead go non-traditional and go purple/gold. Would be too close to Jazz colors.

If they go with an animal:

Rams (no, even though they can, I don't want to see teams in multiple leagues/sports have the same name and doubt they want it, too)

Bighorns (it works, but I don't associate Bighorns with Utah as much as I do other states.

Cougars (has the older woman trope ruined this name now for teams?)

Bobcats (failed NBA team name, could work, but doubt they wouldn't want to try something new)

Black Bears/Bears (Bruins? Feels generic, too. Also, not as fierce. The old Utah Grizzlies names would be meaner/angrier/fiercer but we know that was already a minor league name)

Jackrabbits (Again, I know they might be there but I associate Jackrabbits with more western plains states moreso than Utah)

In no particular order, my preference (and my preferred colors/logo ideas):

Utah Mountaineers (blue and green, logo could be a bighorn)

Utah Archers (rust red, sand, and black; Wild themed anomalous logo)

Utah Rockers (rust red, sand, and black; Wild themed anomalous logo)

Utah Swarm (purple and gold, or black and gold; hornet/bee logo)

Utah Yellow Jackets (primary yellow, navy/black/gold secondary)

Utah Venom (black/red, or yellow/red/black)

Utah Stingers (black/red, or yellow/red/black)

Utah Dragons (like Archers/Rockers, rust red, sand, and black)

UFL has had some really entertaining finishes to their games the first three weeks.

DC was down 10 with just over 2 minutes remaining. Scores, and converts the 4th and 12 to get the ball again. Sets up a 49 yard field goal to win 29-28 on the final play of the game.

That being said, I agree they should probably change the name.

 

Only real downside in all this will be losing the Kachina logo, though it would absolutely be in character for a Utah team to just keep it even though it's irrelevant to the area.

And in all honesty, the post office needs a new, modern, HUGE facility located somewhere closer to a major transit connection outside the city. The old need to build these massive facilities as close to city centers as possible was a relic of thinking that most of the workforce and parcel delivery would be happening in the city. Build a giant facility where 8 and 80 interchange is. Or near Berea, Independent, or Warrensville Heights near 480/271/422 interchanges.

That land inside the city could be used for so much more than relaying mail between various local hubs.

As for a dome. It's the only stadium I support now. As much as I LOVE outdoor football in December, it's no longer a wise financial decision for stadiums that will be over $1 billion at the cheap end. The stadium needs a lot of use to make it worth while. Look at the NCAA Women's March Madness. More of those events are going to be able to utilize a Cleveland domed stadium. Bowl games? Neutral site college games (Ohio State v. MAC school like they tried to do once at CBS and then never again). High school events (Yeah, low budget, but they give the facility use, such as state titles in football, soccer, lacrosse, etc). Major conventions, concerts, and events like the men's or women's march madness (The Women's game is outgrowing regular arenas and won't be available soon). Yeah, the Super Bowl would probably happen if only as an incentive by the league to build it as they've done in Minnesota (twice), Detroit/Pontiac (twice) Indianapolis (once),... especially since the NFL doesn't take bids from cities any more and just picks and chooses which stadiums they want to host it at.

In the end, if the movers and shakers of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County build another outdoor stadium for the Browns, they need to all be required to pay the bill themselves. It's not worth it anymore.

Yes. That became a huge issue with other teams as well. It's why they just all folded. They had already contacted Oklahoma, Milwaukee, Florida and Houston right before the NBC push to limit available teams to channel the new owners to overpriced expansion teams. Which only happened because they had given out teams to NFL owners for only $5m. Indiana did do very well and had built up a nice mutual rivalry with Chicago and Grand Rapids who saw a lot of road fan support which helped ticket sales, atmosphere, legitimacy, etc. But not enough to derail their attempts to get the major city teams on TV as often as possible.
