Am I missing some context? I mean, first, how many players actually wear championship rings outside of special functions anyway? Most people just put them in display case or safe. Second, "participation trophy"? Isn't winning the AL the same as winning the AFC or something? What am I missing?

Yes, most players won’t wear their ring in public regardless. They’re really big and can’t be comfortable to wear. While I understand @Cujo’s view on “2nd Place Rings,” MLB and the NFL have a long history of giving out rings to the championship runner up since the American League and National League once operated independently of each other as so did the NFL and AFL. To each their own. I’m still interested in seeing what gets released.

Remember when the NBA's all star game from 1997-2002 had the players wear their team uniform for the game? What if the other sports leagues did that?

I was wondering. How come the NBA all star game during those years always had the eastern conference wear white and the western conference in the colored uniform?

The Lakers didn't have a white uniform to wear.

    Edit: @MJWalker45 had it first.

I'm curious on everyone's opinions on what a championship ring represents. As someone who has four, I get into "debates" with people all the time regarding the legitimacy of my ownership of these rings.

What it comes down to, and the question I ask, is what the ring represents. To me, it's a culmination of hard work throughout the year/season that results in a ring as a reward for that hard work (besides the paycheck). What seems to be lost to some is 1) Who should get the ring and 2) what you get it for. The first issue comes up in the role. Some argue that only players and coaches deserve rings and not staff or students that work for the team. And the second issue is in regard to why you receive it. That rings are only given if you participated in all events. For example, let's say you're a staff member or player and you've been doing your job all year. Bowl season comes and you can't make the game, (sickness, injury, whatever) and the team wins. Well some people feel that if you don't actually attend/work/play that game, then you don't get the ring, because the ring is for just that one game. But again, I counter that a ring is representative of the whole season.

In my personal life there seems to be a lot of debate and I'm tired of having to defend myself, but I know that if the teams I worked for didn't value me as a member of the team, that I would't have them to begin with.

Still, I want to know what everyone here thinks.

If you really are getting into debates with people about having a ring, can I ask how these debates get started? I just can’t see many people caring that much. If you work for the team, that kind of explains your ownership and that’s all you have to say.

  4. I picked up the Rays 5950 ST hat. The mesh doesn’t bother me that much. I have a full head of dark hair so it all blends together with the dark navy mesh. Maybe blonde hair or a bald head would show through. The fit was right. I wouldn’t want this to become the norm or spread into the in game caps but for a potential one off it isn’t bad.

Why make these? Players will never wear these in public (because it signifies losing when it mattered), especially if you're a Chiefs player and have am actual SB ring from the year before.

I think it goes back to when the NFL and AFL were two separate leagues. The ring still signified a league championship. Same for NL/AL rings in baseball. Some traditions continue.

I won't buy an NHL hat because NE no longer makes them.  If I can find an American needle or M & N for NHL I would buy it.  If MLB dumps NE they would lose a crap ton of sales from fans.

I’ve heard that New Era does make NHL hats, but they are only sold at the team’s retail locations.

  7. It’s hard to imagine MLB not wearing New Era caps, but Nike is a big enough player to take that fight on if they want. Nike used to make really nice fitted caps for their college baseball teams before they switched to the Aero style. All it would take is MLB asking for a New Era style from Nike and I’m sure it could be produced.

Current MLB leadership doesn’t care about tradition. If Nike writes the biggest check, they’ll get the contract.

  8. New Era has already released some fitted 5950 MLB hats with mesh backs. I understand that might not be some people’s preference, but I don’t think it’ll be that bad. My biggest hope is they return to legible logos on the BP hats.

The shanks on the 2002 Bucs ring were good for the time, and I would say are better than the 2021 ring.

The shanks on the 2021 ring are so uninspired. Pair that with a ring face where the Bucs logo and Lombardi trophies are undersized, and the sabre handle gets lost in the trophy it’s a case of poor execution.

To be fair, the bar was very low.

37 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers | Super bowl rings, Ring of honor, Championship rings

Next to the '05 White Sox, probably the worst "big 4" title ring this century

I had the same thought later. This Bucs Super Ring is the worst since…the last Bucs Super Bowl ring.

I agree with the White Sox too. Jerry Reinsdorf let his wife design the Bulls championship rings, and most of them are good for the time and there’s some cohesion as the ring shanks are fairly similar. Her design’s simply didn’t hold up anymore by 2005.

  11. Detail explainer video:

Overall a great looking ring in my opinion. Maybe even a bit restrained but in a good way.

There might be another detail they didn’t mention. There are 6 diamonds split up by rows of sapphires. 3 above (or below) WORLD and 3 below CHAMPIONS. Could represent 6 championships won in LA or the 6 previous championships before 2020.
