When I was a child, all I knew about hockey was informed by NHL 94 on Sega Genesis. We would take turns playing as the Penguins because we knew Lemiux was awesome (and he was in the game -- a 100 rating!), but there was this guy Jagr (that we obviously pronounced "Jagger") would always rack us assists and goals too.

It's insane that a dominant athlete from my childhood -- and I'm in my mid-30s -- is still playing at a high level today.

NHL 94/95/96 was mandatory playing for any hockey fan then. I remember NHL 95 had a master roster list included with the cartridge. I may or may not still have it but it was pretty cool to look at.

I hope nobody's posted these yet...

    Roberto Luongo on the Islanders

Zdeno Chara in the same place: (And in a fishsticks jersey no less)

I don't know if they are necessarily wrong uniforms as much as a painful reminder of the crop of guys the Isles had that got traded away for a hill of beans. This maybe the nostalgist in me but I still kinda associate Luongo, Chara, Bertuzzi, McCabe Berard, Palffy, Jonsson and Salo with the Islanders.

  3. My biggest issue is the part where I can't go to the last read post on threads. It seems like the boards has done away with that, unless it's something that is being integrated during the process. On my phone I could click the thread title and go to my last read post with out either starting at the first page or go to the last page of the thread. On my desktop, I could click the drop box and it would tell the last read post.

  4. I hate when guys like Iginla and Jagr become rent-a-players at the end of their careers. Sort of tarnishes they're main career team "feel" when they wear 17 other sweaters in the league.

I don't mind all of them. Jagr remains more productive than most because of his size, patience, stickhandling, & able to create space without speed.

Guys like Iginla & Recchi, those are players I get tired of... chasing rings instead of playing for fun.

Does anyone really play just for fun or the love of the game? Most if not all play for rings and make the most money they can make for themselves.

  5. .90 on the dollar IS good for the loonie versus the USD. Back when Winnipeg and Quebec left, it was more like .60 on the dollar. Multiply the conversion rate by the "Canadians care about hockey more" rate, and a team will be incredibly successful there.

which makes too much sense and why Bettman will fight to keep the Coyotes in Clowndale or Las Vegas or Palermo, North Dakota.

  6. Oh Lord. Move the Coyotes to Vegas and they're staying there for 15-20 years.

15? I'll take the over. What are the odds on Vegas gold? Will there be a cow skull or playing cards in their branding? Let's put some money on this. Make it interesting.
Definitely over. I'll say black/red/Vegas gold. I think the logo will at least contain the ace of spades.
Read that in Lemmy's voice.I'm going over.

I read it in Lemmy Koopa voice.

I too will take the over.

  7. While looking for that I did find this from the lone meeting between the creamsicles and Panthers.

I played this matchup so many times on Madden ('95, I believe... the one where the Panthers and Jags were ridiculously powerful hidden teams) that this doesn't look weird to me.

Same, but on Tecmo Super Bowl III, which was also for the '95 season.

as much as I enjoyed the Madden series for the Sega Genesis, I enjoyed the heck out of the Tecmo Super Bowl series. OH and the Panthers/Bucs picture, good god that thing is a thing of beauty. Granted I enjoy the Bucs previous look, but there is something beautiful about that panthers/bucs match with the Bucs wearing the creamsicles.
