This might actually be good...? Feels impossible for the disaster that has been the Nike-Canada relationship.

    “Inspired by our past”

I’m not very familiar with any particular iconic Canada kits….could they possibly be drawing inspiration from the 1986 World Cup kit?

    spacer.png

Seems like drawing on thier WC debut would be more fitting for 2026 (40th anniversary AND co-hosting), but with the ‘86 wordmark visible under the inner collar, it seems like that’s where they might be going.

  2. I don’t know why, but I keep finding myself absolutely loving the Belgium Tintin kit. It’s not what I’d ever imagine Belgium wearing and I’m sure it’s going to raise some questions from viewers who aren’t familiar with Tintin, but I really like it as an out-of-the-box way to tie a kit into national culture and history without having to use national colors.

I wish they didn’t feel the need to have that white side panel filled in (I feel like it’s only filled in to show off the template’s features, not as a complimentary feature), but otherwise, it’s a really fun kit and one of my favorites of 2024.

  3. Yeah, I wasn’t a fan of the double blue from the get-go. If anything “Screamed Utah,” it was the mountain era set and colors; the double blue set just sort of blurted “generic cold weather location.” It needed a third color, something warmer like orange or copper, to help it look significantly more “Utah.” I mean, the obvious inspiration to justify that kind of a color scheme was right there:

    spacer.png

And depending on the shades and tints, they mayyybe could’ve stretched something with double blue, orange, and gold that could’ve been argued as a nod to the 2002 Olympics:

    spacer.png

But alas, they didn’t go that kind of route for whatever reason.

Granted, I’d honestly take the double blue over the current black and yellow set if I were to rank all-time Jazz sets, but that’s more of an indictment of the current set than it is an endorsement of the double blue set for sure. It wasn’t great and I don’t miss it all that much.

Cool, now we have two strictly black and white teams. Don’t know why everybody is allergic to actual colors, but it sucks.

The highlighter yellow is still pretty prominent on the black uniforms (especially considering you can see the front jersey numbers from space). I wouldn’t say they’re a strictly black and white team now.

In any case, hardly anyone in the fan base liked the yellow uniforms. It was certainly the most hated of the rebrand set.

  5. Great move for the Yankees. Hopefully the grey base color isn’t too dark (the graphic looks a little darker than usual), but overall, I never felt they needed the white outlines anymore from a functional standpoint. They always just seemed kind of “there” and maybe helped with visibility on TV’s in the 70’s and 80’s, but weren’t needed now with HD. The contrast between navy and their historical road grey was always more than enough.

Besides, I’m not a Yankee fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I am a baseball history fan, and these minor changes go a long way in aligning the look to what they wore on the road when they dominated baseball for multiple generations.

As a Jets fan I can tell you the fanbase hates the green. Whenever Woody tweets about uniforms everyone moans and groans everytime we are set to wear green.

I’m very intrigued and curious about this. Is it green in general that they hate, or the particular shade as opposed to other greens? Or something else about it?

This is all 100% coming from a place of pure curiosity, as I’m mostly just surprised to hear of a team’s traditional primary color that gets flak from its fanbase. I haven’t heard many cases of that before and would love to understand why that is (or see if I’m misunderstanding this altogether, which is totally possible haha).

Yeah, I totally agree. I find most of these courts - Denver, case in point - to be exceptionally distracting and a functional failure visually. This goes far beyond personal preferences or the potential curmudgeon accusations that this opinion could warrant - there are legitimate critical problems with how the design functions in use. There is too much visual clutter and poor color contrast between the blue of the floor and the Nuggets players to allow a more optimal focus on the game action.

That’s not hating fun or new things, that’s calling out legitimate design concerns and functional issues that at least I, myself, am experiencing, as well as others from the looks of it.

The main issue seems to stem from people who want to go back to 1970 when they grandpops use to take them to the old arena and have cracker jacks for $.50 cents

I’ve been pretty vocal about my distaste for the league’s aesthetic decisions, so I’m assuming I’m lumped in here. To illustrate a point, I’ll drop you a plot twist: I was born in 1992 and my grandpop first took me to the arena in 2000 when the Jazz, Sonics, Pistons, Grizzlies, and others still had massive cartoon somethings plastered on the front of thier uniform. Cracker jacks certainly weren’t $0.50 either.

The point? Stop generalizing. Stop assuming everyone has the same exact reason for what they like and don’t like, and especially stop assuming everyone who dislikes what you like and vice versa are wrong somehow. That’s awesome that you like all the branding decisions the league and teams are making - more power to you! I mean that sincerely, you ought to like what you like and be proud to like it. But you can express those opinions freely without demeaning those you disagree with and making them out to be old, senile, decrepit idiots of some kind. I promise you’ll have a lot more fun and have much more engaging discussions here that way. I sincerely hope you give it a try so you can enjoy being in these boards a bit more than you seem to. You and everyone here deserve to have a good time and feel fulfilled in your discussions here.

As a host of the purple mind virus, I'll chime in that while I like the city uni, I absolutely would not want it as the core of a rebrand.
That said, seeing the associated court has really brought me around to the idea of the jazz as a dark purple/lavender team. Pretty unique color scheme that would actually feel like an outgrowth of the team's history and location. Throw in a sky blue or copper to balance the whole thing out. I guess keep the black because management can't not.

In a similar vein, seeing the city uniforms and court together plus this awesome hat from ‘47 brand (which I’m totally buying) has also warmed me up significantly to the idea of purple + lavender.

    spacer.png

I’m actually also very on board with the city edition being the basis of a rebrand, but totally open to other interpretations and versions of a multi-purple scheme too. Maybe they can pull off a sort of “grape rainbow” akin to the Bucks’ Irish rainbow?

And if Ryan Smith absolutely must have black in the color scheme, I don’t think multi-purple looks all that bad with it, so I’d be okay with some black as long as it’s used right and tastefully.

  10. This league has morphed into a circus. I don’t even know what to say about these courts.

It’s pretty clear the league doesn’t give a bleep about branding or aesthetics at this point - they’re going to do what they want, as much as they want, when they want. I’m no longer surprised by the bulldozer of stupid this league has aesthetically become year in and year out.

The only thing that ever keeps me remotely interested in the NBA is my love for the Jazz, and that has far more to do with the Jazz being a cultural staple in Utah and a big part of my upbringing than anything to do with the league. That connection will always be there for me. Outside of the Jazz though, the NBA as a whole has been losing me more and more over time. Part of it is how overly dramatic the league and players often get (it’s veering towards Pro Wrestling), but a big part of it too is that the worsening aesthetics and branding across the league has been so irritating to watch. That’s just me and my preferences - power and kudos to anyone who genuinely enjoys what the league is doing - but I just don’t get this league anymore.

  11. Earlier in the thread this article was posted about the future of the Jazz uniforms, but Ryan Smith let slip a little about the In-Season Tournament uniforms:

    https://www.sltrib.com/sports/jazz/2023/10/25/purple-or-black-utah-jazz-owner/

    Quote

“….but we have six jerseys this year, especially with the in-season tournament,” he said. “We’re going to have that many jerseys next year. There’s always going to be a jersey you don’t like, that’s just the business we’re in.…”

The Jazz uniforms we know of:

    1. White

    2. Black

    3. Safety Vest/Hazard Yellow

    4. Purple 1974 classic

    5. Purple mountain city

    6.????

If Smith is to be believed, there will another uniform coming, and sounds like it would be for the In-Season Tournament.

If those are indeed jersey colors, and do correlate with in-season tournament jerseys that will be worn, I have two stabs at the teams they match.

Option 1, on the left is simply dividing between east and west, groups A,B, & C then trying to match up teams (alphabetical does not seem to make sense). Option 2, on the right is still keeping the playing-groups of 5 together but this time trying to match up teams best suited for the colors shown. Ends up with a bit of a random order.

In both options there are weird ones (Bulls in Maroon, Blazers in gold, Spurs in light blue, Nets in pink) but no matter what I do I keep getting the Knicks in the seafoam/patina color.🤞

    6qZoX0jl.jpg

I think you’re onto something with Option 1 for sure. While you do get some odd ones, there seems to be more teams that look plausible on that arrangement than Option 2. Even the Hawks in powder blue seems plausible, as that is a throwback color and is being used on the new city edition too.

Seafoam/mint for the Knicks would actually seem really plausible if they’re tying it into the Statue of Liberty.

The Jazz I could definitely see in teal if it’s some kind of reverse retro of the mountain jerseys (or at least a nod to them).

There’s others I could point out, but long story short, I think you may have totally picked it up.

always wonder why do you care so much about home white and away color. it's not an american thing, considering that in american footbal the home team wear their color jersey. By the way, i know in the Nba has always been like that, but even if they go for achange, why would it be a problem? i mean for me it's even more righteous.

For me, there’s the tradition part of it and just being used to it, but I also like the maximum contrast that’s provided on two counts - 1) white vs. color provides maximum contrast between the two teams, and 2) as @Digby also pointed out, the paint area is usually (not always, but usually) painted in a team color, and white will contrast against that maximally as opposed to the same team color being worn against it. Uniforms can tend to blend in to the paint area for me at times when they’re the same color.

So in short, it’s both tradition and function that lends to my preference towards white at home*.

*Lakers in gold at home is an exception, of course.

  14. My instant reaction to both last night’s and tonight’s games was “whoa! What the heck! This is crazy!” in the most positive way. It’s definitely one of the more bizarre WS matchups I can remember*, and I love it. Plus, it’s a matchup I can just sit back and enjoy. I don’t have a horse in the race and I don’t dislike either of the teams left to any degree at all. This should be fun all the way through.

*Red Sox/Rockies in 2007 comes to mind, but even then, that was far more one-sided bizarre towards the Rockies than anything; both because “Rockies win the pennant” was somehow a legitimately truthful sentence, and because they went from “sudden surprise inevitable buzzsaw” to “we suck again.gif” in the span of what felt like a few short days. They were like Pinocchio in Shrek 2 when he’s a real boy for two seconds but changed back to wood by a ricochet spell. One of the weirdest pennant winning teams I’ve ever seen.

  15. I can see a purpose for the Jazz’s city as a potential test for a new rebrand (probably not the originally intended purpose, but seems like they’re very conscious of fan input/reaction right now), and the Kings’ make sense as a 100th anniversary nod. I like Boston’s in a vacuum, and if Toronto’s design was in purple/black/red or even black/red, I’d say that’d be a strong candidate for a full-time design.

The rest? Hard evidence that the city edition is far past scraping the barrel. This feels like that scene in Elf when they’re pitching story plots at Greenway and Kyle Gass’s character pitches the plot of the “tribe of Asparagus Children” who are “self-conscious about the way thier pee smells.” There’s just nothing but nonsense left. I’d be floored if City Edition survives another two seasons.

  16. I don’t consider the silver they used then to be little at all. The stripes on the sleeves and torso were fairly substantial and a bit more than mere trim, and the logo had a silver outline too. It’s hard for me to look at the usage and consider it too superfluous.

  17. With all due respect to Mike Breen, who I genuinely think is a great broadcaster himself and not the problem, ESPN’s NBA broadcasts have always seemed so mediocre to me in comparison to NBC’s. The NBA on NBC felt like a massive spectacle that you couldn’t miss, and the coverage was excellent. Outside of Breen, ESPN’s has always felt a bit mailed in and somewhat forgettable.

While Turner isn’t without it’s flaws, I do think it’s much better than ESPN and I often find myself preferring to watch games there instead.

I’d prefer them to just go back to the mid-2010s set (below), as I felt they were a great update to the classic look, but these purple ones would be 100000x better than the trash they’re wearing now.  I wouldn’t even mind a rotation with both.  One as a main, the other as an alt.spacer.png

To be honest, as a fan I just never got around to liking these. The biggest problem to me was the color scheme - I thought the navy and the forest green were too close in shade together and often had contrast problems, and the navy never seemed necessary when purple was the better choice anyways. But I also thought the retro wordmark looked really weird and out of place on a uniform with modern elements and a modern number font. That the side panels and numbers were supposedly cut at the same angle as the ends of the letters on the wordmark made the uniform seem more forced than clever to me. I definitely understand and respect the intention, but it was one case of “neo-retro” that fell particularly flat with me in execution.

And it holds up! That's what's remarkable about it to. It could just be the nostalgia talking, but that '90s set doesn't feel like a '90s set.

I totally agree, and I didn’t realize it until they wore the throwbacks this past season. I’d see highlights and think “wait a minute, that uniform is still working!”  I can’t put my finger on why, but it has a sneakily contemporary look to it even still. I think it’s because it pushed the envelope just enough to be modern, but not so much that it looked like merely a product of its time. It caught me off guard in the best way when I realized that.

It wasn't perfect but I actually liked how the black in their old logo added some contrast with the shadow effect.

On a related note, the reason I vastly prefer the black shadow version is that it actually looks correct in terms of shading - the grey shadow makes no sense because it’s lighter than the blue or the orange, and the shadow as we all know should be darker than whatever area is highlighted.

In short, this version you’ve posted looks correct to me whereas the current primary and its color tweaked predecessors not only look incorrect, but look completely opposite to how light and shadow should function upon it.

  21. I think the LED court is great for using and swapping out multiple court designs (and could also be a solution for placing the Finals logo back ON the court instead of only visible on TV screens), but I don’t think it needs all of that extra in-game animation. We certainly don’t need it to tell us when someone hits a 3-pointer. All of that seems like a lot of unnecessary distraction. I kept finding myself bugged watching that video by the court “reacting” to every point scored and I can’t imagine I’d sit through a whole game well with that.

I’m all for innovation and I’m all for the NBA potentially using this to solve some problems, but it ought to be done within reason and ensuring that it doesn’t create new problems. Restraint would be necessary with adopting such a court.

Either way, yeah, to the extent that Seattle sports were on the national landscape alongside music and tech, it was Griffey and the Sonics. The Seahawks never registered.

You’re not wrong at all on that. I can kind of see both sides of this coin though - on one side it’s absolutely true the Seahawks weren’t nearly as relevant then as the rest of what Seattle offered to 90’s pop culture, and that to some it can seem silly for the Seahawks of all teams to pay homage to it. On the other side though, I can see why the Seahawks would want to step up and honor the era; the Sonics are gone, the Mariners still look (almost) the same as they did back then, and the Kraken and Storm didn’t exist yet. The throwback is a (IMO) beautiful uniform in and of itself, and I don’t see a big problem with them paying homage to Seattle’s 90’s influence with it in a way that none of the other Seattle pro teams really can at the moment*.

It’s also worth noting that, if the Seahawks really want to pay tribute to 1990’s Seattle, this is probably a much better way to do it than a flannel grunge “city” edition or some sort of weird Frasier homage alternate that says “Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs” on the neck tape. I’ll choose the throwback over the many different alternatives the league is starting to creep into every time.

*I say at the moment in the hopes the Sonics come back someday and bust out a ‘96 throwback as soon as they can.
