  1. Here's a pretty good explanation of the 2006-2022 "flexing" system: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League_on_television#Flexible_scheduling
  2. Bingo! From the Panthers' website: CHARLOTTE — The Panthers will have a (slightly) new look this season, but it's not a dramatic change, and perhaps not one most people will even notice. When Nike started making NFL uniforms in 2012, the blue they used was the one in their color book that most closely matched the Panthers' color, but it was not an exact match. In recent years they have added more colors to their color book, so they now have a closer replication that is more in line with the team's blue – process blue.
  3. Saying the Yankees have occupied Yankee Stadium for 100 years is like saying Elizabeth Taylor was married for 33 years.
  4. September 8, 1985, Week 1 of the NFL regular season -- Bud Grant returned to coach the Vikings after Les Steckel went one-season-and-done with a 3-13 record in 1984. The Vikings hosted the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers for the season opener. I was at that game with my dad and brothers. We all expected the Vikes to get creamed by a clearly superior 49ers team, but there was still excitement at the Metrodome thanks to the return of the legendary coach. The game was low-scoring in the first half, with the Vikings getting shut out, but Minnesota forced 6 turnovers, scored 7 points in the third to tie it and another 21 in the fourth to pull off the upset. After a year of seeing the Vikings getting rolled over in game after game, it was thrilling to see them come to life and dominate a great team, even if only for a few minutes. I've still never had more fun at a game. RIP Coach Grant.
  5. Happy to see Houston's pants looking a lot more "just" gray than the gunmetal blue-gray they appeared to be in the promotional pics.
  6. If Greg Olsen gets that #1 Fox analyst spot, I hope he's able to break the habit of ending so many statements with "Right?" Last season, it became one of those "once you hear it you can't unhear it" distractions for me.
  7. Which is why I give a thumbs up to this iteration of the Stars going with yellow rather than gold. It's garish, but I appreciate the attempt at variety.
  8. Breakers showing off the most dramatic re-interpretation of the 80s helmet graphics so far.
  9. Are Tampa Bay's pants identical to Houston's away pants?
  10. From the "You Had One Job" Department: espn.com this morning has their "On This Date" item on the sidebar about the 1952 NFL Dallas Texans' one and only win over the Bears, and accompanying it is a picture of the Dallas Texans of the AFL playing against the Buffalo Bills on September 30, 1962.
  11. For a good series of topical pics, consider the Vikings' sad history of recycled star quarterbacks in the last 25 years or so: Archie Manning: Jim McMahon: Warren Moon: Randall Cunningham: Jeff George: And then there was that last guy, He Who Shall Not Be Posted.
