    I'm in that same boat.

There's some golden info in "In the Hornets' Nest" chronicling the Charlotte Hornets' first season. Before being awarded a team David Stern directed George Shinn to a couple of troubled franchises including the Jazz and the Clippers among other teams.

I remember reading rumors of the Jazz and Nuggets merging, the group that bought the Kings to move them to Sacramento almost bought the Pacers in 1982 and the Kings almost moving to Dallas or Minneapolis back in the late 70s.

I love all that 'What If' history.

OH ... and then there was the NBA Expansion team awarded to Toronto in 1975, but there wasn't a group that could come up with the franchise fee so expansion was cancelled.

I remember in 1983, there was a rumor that the Pacers would be sold and moved to Anaheim. Living at SoCal at the time, I remember the Pacers had the coin flip with the Rockets coming up that would determine the No. 1 draft pick, which would be Ralph Sampson, and thought it would be cool that Ralph Sampson might be playing for a local team. Of course, the rumor died pretty quickly and the Rockets won the coin flip, anyway.

The defining feature of the White Sox for their entire existence was their changing look.  It's amazing that this came to a halt in 1987, when they adopted the uniforms that they still wear.  The Sox have now completely turned it around, and have become one of the most stable teams, uniform-wise.

Indeed, all four of the big uniform changes that came in for 1987 lasted a very long time.  Three of them (Sox, Braves, A's) are still with us; and one (Twins) was around until only a couple of years ago.

Actually, the White Sox started their current look in 1991 (though I believe they jumped the gun a bit and actually started wearing those unis in the waning days of the 1990 season). In 1987, they changed to the cursive "C" on the caps, with the cursive "White Sox" on the home jerseys. A pretty uninspired set that didn't last too long.

And speaking of the Angels and Tim Salmon in particular, I'll add:

I don't see why that would be the "wrong" uniform. He played five years in that one, preceded by five years in the Disney unis and four years in the 'CA' uniforms.

    However ...

He made his ML debut in late 1992, the last year of the 1980s era uniforms and ...

... after retiring in 2006, he was honored by the Angels early in 2007 and came out wearing the red alternate, which had been introduced that season and was never worn by Salmon as an active player.

    Yes, but...

The owners of Stockton at the time they switched to the Mudville Nine identity later sold that Stockton team but retained ownership of the Mudville Nine identity. They then bought the Visalia Oaks and shortly thereafter changed the team name from Oaks to Rawhide. In short, the same owners are responsible for both the Mudville Nine and the Visalia Rawhide identities. Which is why one can buy Mudville Nine merchandise in the Visalia Rawhide web site store.

Ah, I did not know that. It's been a while since I've been to Visalia.

Personally, I'm of the mind that - when done right - unique identities for minor-league franchises are vastly preferable to simply aping the parent-club's name, logos, and uniforms.

Off the top of my head, a "Top Ten" of MiLB identity-packages would include:

    Bradenton Marauders
    Burlington Bees

    Clearwater Threshers
Daytona Tortugas (I also thought the Daytona Cubs identity - which immediately preceded the change to Tortugas - was outstanding.)
    Durham Bulls
Hillsboro Hops (Easily my favorite current identity package in MiLB.)
    Idaho Falls Chukars
    Modesto Nuts

    Toledo Mud Hens
Visalia Rawhide (I loved the Mudville Nine identity even more.)

I'm also a fan of the identities sported by the Asheville Tourists, Cedar Rapids Kernels, Lakeland Flying Tigers, Reno Aces, and West Virginia Black Bears.

Actually, the Mudville Nine was the team in Stockton. The Rawhide were previously the Visalia Oaks and, more briefly, the Central Valley Rockies.

This has been out there since the early days of Anaheim Stadium. I'm pretty sure it's always been red, so it would be weird if the one on the cap weren't.

EDIT: Apparently it was originally white. Did not know that.

It was painted green after the stadium remodel and stayed that color during the Edison Field years.
