I think the thing that bothers me the most about the Heat is the narrative that they're heckin wholesome underdogs. the Heat are historically one of the most successful franchises in the entire league, and if you're accounting for how long they've been a franchise, they're 100% in the top three. forgive my 2000 WCW analogies, but they're firmly part of the Millionaire's Club - and just like the Millionaire's Club, they've bafflingly become the good guys in this scenario. as sick as I am of Unocal's bitching, he has a point. a prestige franchise sleepwalking through the regular season only to rubberband in the playoffs is one of the most irritating things in sports.

This is how I kind of feel as well.

There's been so much focus on the Heat being a #8 seed, but there are two things that don't make them a typical #8 seed.

    1) They finished 7th in the East, a game out of 6th place. They ended up the 8th seed because of their loss to Atlanta in the play-in game.

    2) They were the #1 seed last year in the East. And, over the past five years -- 2019 (10), 2020 (5), 2021 (6), 2022 (1), 2023 (8*). Nothing elite regular season-wise, but they play well in the playoffs because "Heat Culture."

I wish the media would stop fawning over them being a 8th seed. They're a really good team coached by an amazingly smart coach.

I guess one important question is, has there been any indication that the Jazz are looking to build a new arena? Because I figure no new building will happen without their input, and though I hate repeating myself it really cannot be overstated how suboptimal the soon-to-be-again Delta Center is for NHL hockey.
Four words: "Barclays Center, but worse":

Like, if we're gonna move the Coyotes here full-time? Just put them back in downtown Phoenix at Talking Stick/Footprint/whatever it's called now instead, because that'd still be better than this; at least the Suns' arena has hockey-ready seating in a endzone!

There are plans for an arena where they're planning on building a baseball stadium west of Downtown SLC. Depending on when a team moves in (ie-Coyotes or expansion) I assume they'd play a year or two at the Delta Center, something that's doable short term.

Do you guys think that if the Coyotes hypothetically pack the U-hauls for Salt Lake City, that they would use Utah as their name, or Salt Lake City?

I think with RSL you're seeing Salt Lake being embraced more, especially if referencing the Salt Lake Valley and County. But, for I prefer Utah for brevity.

My preferences for a nickname would be -- Gulls, Eagles or Fightin' Saints.

The Fightnin' Saints is a pipedream/semi-serious joke. But, I think with the history of the Golden Eagles and Gulls (baseball) works. I'd just drop the Golden of Golden Eagles because of Vegas, but my preference would be the Utah Gulls. You could have some fun with that name.

  4. The hidden bridge in the B is too hidden and overall there's nothing to me that FEELS like the Bay Area. However, I actually really do like the name. That'd be a good name for a MLS team.

LOCKERVISION REPORT FOR FINALS GAMES 1-4

GAME 1: NUGGETS (Mile High City, because of course) vs HEAT (Red)

GAME 2: NUGGETS (Navy icons, I like it) vs HEAT (White Hot Heat)

GAME 3: HEAT (White Hot Heat) vs NUGGETS (Mile High City AGAIN)

GAME 4: HEAT (White again, nice) vs NUGGETS (Navy icons)

It seems like the Heat keep things fairly traditional with the color choices which I appreciate. I'm sure we would have seen the Heat in red for Game 2 if the Nuggets' navy and Heat red didn't offer much contrast. Let's pray both teams stay away from their City editions for Games 5-7. Woof.

My dream NBA finals uniform matchup

Nah. Give me some pure '80s magic.

But, in all seriousness, I'd love to see some color vs. color ONLY if the Nuggets wear their lighter blues. This matchup is what color vs. color was meant for ...

Miami owns Boston this year. Celtics & Bruins eliminated by Heat & Panthers this post season plus Dolphins beat out Patriots for one of the final playoff spots this past NFL season.

You speak this, but it ain't over until it's over in the Heat-Celtics series. The Celtics have a long road ahead of them, but these past two games have proved we may see AT LEAST a Game 7.

Okay, the league only has the first four games of each series (weird), the Lakers and Nuggets definitely didn't get the memo from the Heat and Celtics.

    Eastern Conference Finals

    G1 - MIA (Red) @ BOS (White)

    G2 - MIA (Red) @ BOS (White)
    G3 - BOS (Black) @ MIA (White)

    G4 - BOS (Green) @ MIA (White)

    G5 -

    G6

    G7

    Western Conference Finals

    G1 - LAL (Gold) @ DEN (Blue - Statement)

G2 - LAL (Gold) @ DEN (Navy Blue)
    G3 - DEN (Blue - Statement) @ LAL (White)

    G4 - DEN (White - City) @ LAL (Gold)

    G5

    G6

    G7

The schedule is still not updated on LockerVision. But, it looks like we might not even need a schedule for Games 5-7 for either Conference.

Proof the NBA is rigged? 🤣

What is interesting about about the Power District plan on SLC’s west side is that an article (that came out the day before the MLB plan was formally announced) did mention (through “sources,” so take that for what you will) that an NHL-caliber arena is also under consideration

Huh. I completely missed that part about the Power District project.

Good idea in theory but you know the greedy owners prefer that sweet expansion money.

Which is why I think what will happen is the Coyotes will be bought by the league (again), they'll play at Mullet Arena for a couple more years with no rush to move while the NHL will put the team on the market with a price tag upwards to an expansion fee.

That would allow cities (outside of Houston, KC, Quebec City, Portland, etc) to pitch the league for the team that aren't move-in ready (like SLC, San Diego, Austin, etc.) and drive up the sale price.

  11. Honestly, the NHL shouldn't have expanded to 32 until the Arizona situation was solved. It would have been much easier to sell/move the Coyotes to Vegas or Seattle and then expand. Now if the Coyotes leave for Quebec, Houston, SLC, etc., etc. the situation is more hasty than if the NHL opened up an expansion bid process.

MLB is smart in waiting to expand until Tampa and Oakland are figured out.

Sorry to be pedantic but acktually it's from the World Figure Skating Championships a year earlier 🙃

In all seriousness yeah, it's from 20 years ago, but it's not actually any better now. At the very least this more modern photo shows that the NHL rink does not, in fact, have to run under the sideline bleachers the way the international-sized ice seemed to, thankfully, but it's still not good as a long-term solution. And since I don't think the Jazz are looking for a new arena (yet), a long-term solution is what it would have to be.
    vivint-arena-2.jpg
At said 2002 Olympics though, they didn't even do the hockey gold medal games here, they ran those at the E Center way out in West Valley City; and lest anyone think another suburban arena is the solution to the Coyotes problems: the E Center only seats 12,000 fans. 💀

Yeah, the Delta Center is not a long term solution. And, the Maverik Center location works for minor league hockey even with a renovation. However the west side of the valley is growing rapidly that it COULD work, but I am of the belief that if hockey is going to work long term here in SLC it will have to be owned by Ryan Smith, or whoever owns the Jazz, with a shared arena.

I'll let @Conrad. confirm or deny this, but my bet is they're going back to blue/red/white. (probably a light blue, if I had to guess.)

The video unveiling the script change was predominantly filled with images of the Kings from their days as a primarily blue club. There's only one or two purple uniforms in that issue. It feels as if they went out of their way to showcase their prior color scheme.

33 minutes ago, Lights Out said:

I just watched the video and I don't get that impression at all. They even included multiple pictures of the shiny gold alternates that a lot of people hated at the time. Of course, there's no getting around the fact that red, white and blue were their team colors when they originally introduced the script.

Yeah, I don't get that impression either. In fact, I get a great impression that they're doing a black version of the script based off the tease. Odds are it'll be on the Statement jerseys and we probably won't see a change (or much of one) on the Icon and Association jerseys.

However, I could see them use the script at some point for their City Edition jerseys with a light blue or whatever, but the Kings are entrenched into being a purple and black team now.

Strangely enough, I only know one Avs fan here and he’s a co-worker who is originally from Denver anyways. One other co-worker is a Wild fan because he lived in Minnesota for a while, another co-worker is a Kraken fan because he worked in Seattle for a few years and adopted it as a second hometown, and a friend of mine is a Caps fan because she worked in DC for a few years. There’s a decent number of Knights fans here, but not nearly enough for me to say Utah is strongly Knights territory either.

This is a long way of saying I think there’s interest in hockey here, but those who are fans here either root for teams from places they have other connections to, or just recently hopped on to the Knights wagon. The Avs don’t really have a foothold here at all, so there wouldn’t be any worry of cutting into any sort of territory.

The biggest challenge for an SLC team would be the stadium. Soon-to-be-again Delta Celter wasn’t really built with hockey in mind and has bad sightlines, and as you mentioned,  Maverik Center (formerly E Center) in West Valley is a minor league stadium. They’d either have to build a new stadium and grit out a season or two at the Delta Center, or renovate either existing stadium.

I feel like one of the reasons why Ryan Smith would be interested in an expansion team is because of the arena situation. It'd give him more time to determine an arena situation and would probably be dependent on getting the Olympics again. There'd have to be a new arena and that could give him the resources for a place for a team along with the Jazz (if needed).

Also, I've HEARD that the Maverik Center is expandable if needed, but I haven't seen or read anything that would suggest that.

Alright, so having done some research on this, I've come to the conclusion that Delta Center in SLC is completely inadequate for NHL hockey. You all mentioned how it has the problem of stacked seats on one endzone because the rink is too long for the normal arena space, ala Barclays Center and Talking Stick Arena?

    a-general-view-of-the-delta-center-durin

Well, it turns out Delta Center has that problem on both endzones. (And possibly along the sidelines, depending on how wide this non-NHL rink is!) Listed capacity for hockey, according to Wikipedia: 14,000.

That's the setup from the Olympics, not that the hockey setup is any better, but I think it'd work temporarily better than Phoenix or Brooklyn.

As for SLC, is the Vivint Arena made for a proper hockey setup?  All pics I have seen of the venues ice setup is like this.

Yeah, the Delta Center isn't suited well for hockey. But, I think the only way it happens is if Ryan Smith buys them and eventually builds a new arena for both teams. I feel like the teams would cannibalize each other with two separate owners and arenas.

I want a hockey team here in SLC, but it feels like a longer shot than MLB.
