  1. It's hard to find a picture of Rick Barry in a home Rockets jersey from his two year stint in Houston. But, I always loved that he wore different numbers. #2 for home games and #4 for road games, because his usual #24 was worn by Moses Malone.
  2. Here's a Knicks-Bullets game from the old Madison Square Garden. The caption noted this was taken between 1950-1952 so this is obviously the first version of the Baltimore Bullets that folded in 1952. Not sure why they folded, but I'm sure their sleeved jerseys had a lot to do with it.
  3. I noticed this on a number of preseason jerseys in the NBA in the mid-90s. The Jazz had white numbers in 94 or 95 -- and I believe Pistons did as well. I'l have to dig and see if I can find anything.
  4. What I'm saying is that girl wasn't the sole person who suggested Raptors ... it was one of the ten names from 2000 suggestions. From what I've read and found it seems like she just won a drawing of those suggested names. But, there were more factors than just her suggestions -- popularity of the the movie, dinosaurs at the time, focus groups, etc.
  5. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the little girl who named the team. There was a contest of over 2,000 suggestions and Raptors was one in 10 that were considered. I'm looking for record of the girl winning the contest, but I'm sure it was a drawing of a few hundred suggestions like how most of these contest end up being. I found this from the official Raptors page: http://www.nba.com/raptors/news/behindthename_081606.html
  6. Here are a few things I found in regards to the Sonics ... The first couple seasons of the iconic Sonics arch uniforms featured different style #2s -- with slanted 2s on the road and block on the home jerseys. Also note the shorts numbers are both slanted. Also the logo on the road shorts would be reversed later in the 80s to match the home version. Small abnormality ... Gus Williams' #1 in the Bill Russell jerseys is pretty small compared to the regular numbers on the other jerseys. It seems like it was this way for a good chunk of the season in 1978. Not sure if this is the preseason or not? But, Quintin Dailey's #20 is white with a gold outline instead of the other way around. Interesting nonetheless. A blank #25 jersey worn by Jack Sikma -- I am assuming his #43 was lost, stolen or forgotten. I'm sure what the story is behind it or if it was during the Finals? But, I doubt that with all the blue seats in the background. A fun photo of the Sonics' lone full-season in the Tacoma Dome (1994-95) while the Coliseum was renovated. They played a number of other games throughout the years at the Tacoma Dome, but I haven't found any pictures of those games.
  7. Here's another dome layout for basketball for the Kingdome.
  8. That is true. Though the shorts did go through some various changes if I recall correctly (ie-Yankees NY, Yankee NY in apple logo, etc.). Seems like a New York thing with the Islanders, Giants and Jets doing the same thing. And, I guess you can add the Rangers in there too after going to the shield logo for a few seasons.
  9. That's a DISGUSTING looking cake? I hope they didn't pay more than $5 for it. HAHA!
  10. Speaking of the Nets. Are there any other teams in the NBA that ditched one design for another before coming back to the SAME design? And, I am not talking about the Jazz note logo because that jersey was modernized.
  11. Okay, one more the day ... This is really interesting and odd. I am trying to figure out the date. It's obviously the 1980-81 (because of the 35th anniversary patch), but I am not sure if it's during the Rockets-Celtics game on December 19th, 1980 during the regular season or the NBA Finals? I am assuming it's the regular season? But, pay attention to Calvin Murphy's jersey. It's a generic red and white jersey -- no gold as you can see on the hiding Rudy T in the background. It also has an arched 'HOUSTON' on the front with a blocked #23 on the front. I am assuming his jersey was lost? I tried researching it some online and couldn't find any articles on a missing jersey, etc. for the 1980 dates I found for this game. I guess I am putting this out there in hopes anyone else can shed light on it?
  12. Sorry for all the posts, but there's a lot of content I've found and want to share! But, Astrodome was going through renovations when the All-Star Game was played there. You can see the construction in the background of this shot. I do wonder if that was a factor in this layout?
  13. Here is a great shot of the Superdome set up for a New Orleans Jazz game. Compared to Astrodome's All-Star set up it's more spectator friendly.
  14. PLEASE DO! But, I'll still wait with bated breath for Monday.
  15. A few things from the New Orleans Jazz that I found ... I am trying to date this picture. I believe it's in 1974 -- the Jazz's inaugural season. The logo on the jersey is very simplified version (with no basketball in the note) of the team logo and from what I've seen has only been used on the road. As all of the home game pictures from 1974 (as seen below) are the refined and detailed logo. I'm not sure if this was a whole season thing or first couple of months, etc.? This is from the 1974 season -- as it was the only season Pistol Pete wore #44 with the Jazz. I'm not sure if he changed midseason, but he eventually changed to #7. These jerseys also have the simplified note logo on them. I just used this picture, because I love the "Pistol" nickname on the back of the jersey. A few things from this picture -- 1) It's from the inaugural season, 2) It's being played in the Municipal Auditorium (one of two arenas the Jazz used before moving into the Superdome the following year) -- notice the elevated court and net. 3) The Jazz are wearing a detailed logo on the home white jersey unlike the roads. 4) Notice Rudy Tomjanovich's nickname on the back of his jersey. 5) I love the gold on these Rockets jerseys. BAR NONE by favorite NBA warmup. Great use of the Jazz's basketball logo. Seriously makes me miss team's unique warmup designs. I nope Nike brings that back (doubt it). I haven't seen an in game picture -- and don't expect to find one -- of Walt Bellamy in a Jazz jersey as he played in only one game before retiring. But, at least this picture exists.
  16. I haven't found many pictures of the Braves' games in Toronto. But, here is one in the old Gardens against the Knicks. There isn't really anything unusual about this picture, I was taken aback by the beauty of the gold and sky blue contrast of the Lakers and Braves. BEAUTIFUL!
  17. I'm not sure what being a little girl has to do with the winning entry? But, I'm not sure if Towers is better than Raptors? Sure, Raptors is very niche and aged. But, Towers is just kinda ... boring? Like, really boring. Huskies,Grizzlies, Mounties, Beavers, Moose, Hosers or something more Canadian-ish, in my opinion, would be better.
  18. Perfect. Thanks for the info. Yeah, I figured the year for the same reason, but I couldn't find anything on the reason for the patch.
  19. I've been looking for one of those pictures. I believe this is pre-season -- it's being played in Landover, MD -- but, the Hawks also played in the old style in their first game against Detroit in 1982. There's a video floating around somewhere on these boards, but I have been looking for evidence via a picture. GREAT FIND.
  20. Interesting name on the back for the Bucks' Marques Johnson. I recall Isiah Thomas doing this for a season or so in Detroit as well? OLD TIMER CELTICS GAME -- 1985ish? Crappy uniforms. They all look like the cheap replicas. Pacers vs. Bulls game that looks to being played in Univ. of Indiana's Assembly Hall. Not sure of the reason behind this?
  21. Men's 1984 USA Team vs. NBA All-Stars at the Hoosier Dome. Interesting layout -- more so in the vein of what the Final Fours do how with a full stadium layout instead of a corner. I also believe the success of this game led the NBA to move the All-Star from Market Square to the Dome.
  22. Interesting. I saw that picture and assumed it was a memorial patch. EDIT: Read above notes. Makes sense. I digging now to see why the memorial patch.
  23. I've had a hard time finding this Cincinnati Royals jersey style. I believe it was worn only one season before they moved to the Midwest as the Kings. Notice the many different styles of "2s" on the Kings. McCray (#22) and Tisdale (#23) have a slanting 2 and Pervis Ellison has a blocked 2. Probably a laundering issue. But, notice the different shade of purples on the jersey and shorts. Doesn't seem to have been a year long issue, just this game from what I saw. I've never seen this jersey, especially on Dawkins, but this seems to be a preseason game in 1976. Posted this in another thread, but this belongs here too. Ted Stepien (pictured) poses with the logo he was going to use for the relocated Cavs if he was allowed to move them to Toronto as the Towers. I haven't seen many pictures of Charles Barkley in the Sixers' rainbow jersey with his familiar #34. As many know he changed his number to #32 after Magic retired in 1991.
  24. I wasn't sure where to put all of these, so I figured I'd start a new thread of small little finds I found while browsing the 'net -- and specifically, right now -- Getty Images. Most of these are small oddities, difficult finds and what not. I was going to open this up to stuff I found in other sports, but basketball and NBA history in the 70s and 80s has recently captured my attention. Anyways ... some of my finds: GORGEOUS Color vs. Color in Baltimore against the Bullets and Warriors (also note it's Ladies Night!) Royals vs. Warriors game in Phoenix's Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The caption says it was a 1967 pre-season game. Note Rick Barry in the old-style Warriors' jersey. He never wore these in the regular season as 'The City' jerseys were introduced on Opening Night 1967. Larry Nance wearing #6 in the half season right after he was traded to Cleveland from Phoenix. Similarly, Kevin Johnson wore #11 in Phoenix for the half season after he was traded from Cleveland to Phoenix. Interesting font and styling of Tom McMillen's name on this Hawks' jersey. Not sure why the underline? Notice the name on the back of Dave Stallworth of the Bullets. The name was pretty long so the "st" of Stallworth is white to not clash with the blue stripe.
  25. Two things from that ... 1) I am sooooooo glad that Shinn didn't go with the Charlotte Spirit. 2) If the NBA picked only one team from Florida and it was the Heat -- do you think it would be the Florida Heat?
