  1. Portland Crafters: - unique - Synthesizes several suggestions from this thread i.e. Peddlers, Roasters, Lagers and Woodsmen. If the definition was stretched, the names Explorers, Pioneers, Rustics and Settlers could be said have a link to the Crafters name. - craft beer brewing and coffee brewing are simply the largest examples of a "cottage industry" that thrives throughout Portland. - carpenters would be employed to help build the proposed wooden stadium -- what is a craft if not carpentry. - most ballplayers would probably agree that proficiency in the sport of baseball is a craft - apprentice = rookie journeyman = player between rookie and veteran status master = veteran jack-of-all-trades = utility fielder
  2. Portland Rustics: - during it's early days, Portland and Oregon were nothing if not rustic - incorporates the essence of the region's movement toward a lifestyle that resembles the area's early pioneers such as sustainable living - Speaking of pioneers, no other nickname is more suited for a Portland MLB team than the Pioneers (previously suggested). Sure, Lewis & Clark College has that nickname -- but they do not own it. We should not eliminate the nickname as a possibility simply because another school uses it. Lewis & Clark College is a very small, private, Division III school where, in reality, sports play an insignificant role and is of little interest to most of it's 2,134 undergraduate students. In addition, high school, college and professional sports teams throughout the US share hundreds if not thousands of nicknames. In fact, the Beavers, a heavily advocated nickname on this thread would be shared with one of Oregon's major universities. - Besides, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were explorers not pioneers -- those that came later and stayed were the pioneers. - barring the use of Pioneers, the Rustics is most synonymous with the context in which the Pioneers nickname would be used - the Settlers, a nickname also suggested earlier in this thread, would be another that follows in this vein
  3. Portland Ee-nas: - Chinuk Wawa word for beavers (using this popular choice for a team name as an example) - very unique - the Chinook Indian Nation were the early inhabitants of the Lower Columbia river area, including Portland - Chinuk Wawa was the first language of Oregon - would bring attention to the efforts to revitalize Chinook Jargon - would honor without offending - could enlist tribal language experts to help choose a name If the team was named the Ee-nas, the logo could look something like this...
  4. 5. Portland Totems: - unique - the totem pole originated in the Pacific Northwest - pays homage to early inhabitants of the region - a wide range of potential logos from which to select and design - totem poles could be displayed in and around a new wooden stadium - Northwest Coast art could be nicely incorporated into the stadium design for a team named the Totems Befitting of a wooden stadium built in the Pacific Northwest, I propose that it be called: The [insert corporate sponsor's name] Lodge. http://www.koin.com/news/mlb-in-portland-wood-stadium-may-be-game-changer_20171130085834477/870122757 https://ballparkdigest.com/2017/07/20/how-to-lure-mlb-to-portland-an-all-wood-ballpark/ http://portlandtribune.com/but/239-news/368256-250036-wood-products-ninth-inning-comeback
  6. Portland Sticks: - unique - the name capitalizes on that early form of baseball -- stickball - much of the US considers the Northwest to be "out in the sticks" - a new stadium will be built using some very big sticks that will be sticking together in the form CLT (cross-laminated timber) - Oregon is full of big sticks and would be full of Portland Sticks fans - of course the team would carry "big sticks" - our team and fans would always "stick it out" and "stick in there" until the end - the team would always "stick it to" our opponents I think this will be a name that sticks.

  8. Portland Woodlanders: - unique - relevant geographically and historically, as well as today - appeals to all types who like to spend time in Oregon's forests - fits well with a team that would play in a wooden ballpark - will not alienate either side of the forest use debate - anybody can be a Woodlander Go Woodlanders!
  9. Portland Roasters: - unique - relevant throughout the state - relevant across age groups - widely associated with one of Portland's reputations - can be spun in numerous positive ways - sort of has a vintage feel about it, much like the nostalgia baseball can conjure up And the list goes on. Is there really a better or more natural fit?
